chapter 1
"Sinister, I know that I trusted a noble and strong woman to tend to my daughter. I know she can be a handful and sometimes a little bit out of hand. But that is why I need you while I am gone. It's different now that you are not here at the round table to share your thoughts and comments. I must say I wish you were here to keep Lord Damien Cypress in line. Like always, he has been on the edge of just killing and making new servants. I know I shouldn't have sprung this on you so soon. I need you, Sini, I need you to watch Novalee. She needs help with her princess duties. She is a handful, I will admit, but she is my only child. I need you to protect her and watch her while I am gone. Maybe you can bond with her? Make a new friend. I know you need more of those in your life. I am just joking, Sini. Teach her and train her. When Luna and I get back, I promise we will discuss what you have missed at the table, and enjoy a nice evening of laughter and love. Sini, be strong you got this. I know you hate kids and really cannot stand to have a child around because of your work.” From yours dearly: Lord Graham BlackThorn. Folding the golden note, I sighed. I knew at any given moment my niece would be here. I accepted my niece coming to stay while Graham was at war. War was all he knew. He hadn't changed a bit, not even with a child. War was all I used to know as well, but upon my upbringing, I broke away from warring with others. Living in a mansion with servants that clean and do my bidding. Thousands upon thousands of rooms, And none was filled with a single person. Sighing with a mumble under my breath, I turned and looked at the door. The solid oak door shook with a knock upon it. Quickly smoothing my dress, I announced "Come in." A tall young man walked in with his face upheld with pure perfection. His green eyes sparkled like the northern lights. " Ms Monroe, Your niece has arrived". His voice was pure with a sickening bitter-sweet sound. His body was lean and fit, with dashing brown hair. " Bring her to the great hall. I'll be there in a moment." With a nod he turned and walked out the door, shutting it behind him. Turning to look at myself in a mirror, I sighed. The dress was as blue as the ocean and my makeup was perfect as a freshly dolled up model. My stilettos were as shiny as a new quarter and my hair was straight as straw. With a huff and a puff, I turned and went to face my niece for the first time in her lifetime. Before turning around and closing the door, I looked into my office and saw nothing but perfection and order. With a slam of the door, I began to walk down the hall. The hall was filled with portraits and paintings. The walls were off-white with a trim of gold. Sighing knowing what I have done to achieve what I have now and facing one of the hardest things I could have done. Killing and slaughtering is how I gained my social status in the Immortal World. Stopping at one particular portrait, I analyzed it for a moment. The portrait always made my stomach unsettled, like I had to strive to do my best. The portrait was of a man and a woman who were dressed in old-timey clothes, you might say. I ran a finger across the woman’s face with an unsettled thought. Closing my eyes, I heard shouting that rang in my ears. Balling my hands and clenching them tight until they were as red as Rudolph's nose, I walked down the hall until I reached the stairs where I would pick up my pace when, hearing the shouting, it became louder with each step. Walking down the stairs with grace, I stopped at the bottom of the stairs. As the shouting was now booming in my ears, I could now make out what was being said. “ What are you thinking? Don’t take them to my room. My daddy paid a lot of money for that! You're an i***t, and you're worthless!” a female shouted. As I cleared my throat she turned around with a smack of her gum. “Hi Aunt Sinister”, Her voice was grim and sour and over sarcastic with a roll of her eyes. Raising my brow, I looked over at her. She was in a petticoat that was black and old looking and torn, pants that looked like they had not been washed in days, and a spaghetti strap tank top that was too small. “Hm, your father did say you needed work, didn't know it was this bad” I mumbled under my breath. “Chester will be taking your things to your room and when you get there, You will have new and proper clothes to put on.” Still with my eyebrow raised I looked at her. Her hair was messy, half ass makeup done. Honestly, it made her look like a hooker and not a princess. “I like the way I dress, and I am not wearing those fancy clothes that you got me. That's not my style.” She said as she crossed her arms. “Princess, don't dress like cheap whores, now go upstairs to your room and change for dinner” I said as I walked off, hearing her scoff at what I had told her. Upon entering the dining area, I looked at the table. It would hold 35 people. As I sat upon the glass table I looked at the china that had been placed on it. Beautiful china that was imported from Italy. Each piece had its own design on them, blue and white plates and glasses and freshly polished silverware had been set accordingly, and it was perfect. Hearing the scuffing of heels that scraped across the hard wooden floors, I waited for the argument to begin. “Okay, this is utterly insane. I am getting out of this life-sucking thing! ”Novalee stated. “If you do, you will not eat. Only civilized people eat in the dining room,” Sinister stated back. Novalee growled as she went and sat down in a nearby chair that was close to Sinister. “Each chair was properly placed in order of where they go and who sits in them, as I am head of the household here, I sit at the front and from there it goes on. Novalee You sit three places down on the right side of the table.” Novalee raised an eyebrow at Sinister. “What is wrong with the place I am sitting at?” Sinister cleared her throat. “On the right side is for family only. The left is for friends. Three spots down from where I sit is your place. As it goes your Father, Mother, then you, head of households, always go first.” leaning back in my chair, “Did your school teach you these things?” Sinister questioned. She slouched as she moved to the proper seat. “Honestly, I don't pay attention in school because it is dumb! What they are teaching is what they taught my dad when he was 12! And that was a long ass time ago!” She raised her voice as she spoke. “You are a princess, you may not have had the choice when you were born, and you may not have these rules enforced at your house, but here you will act that part. I have many guests that come for business and I will not let them see sloppiness here, especially from a princess.” Sinister sat forward to spin the blood that was in her glass, making a small tornado in it. “Aunt Sinister, Look I am not like you nor do I wish to be a cold heart b***h like you. My father sent me here because he is gone, and I am not changing because of that. Father has told me about you and, if I am honest, you don’t sound like a fun or even remotely entertaining person. Boring if you ask me” Novalee giggled as she placed her elbows upon the table. “ And your father asked me to make sure you know your duties. If he doesn’t return”. Sinister stated back as Novalee just rolled her eyes. A few moments later, Chester came in with two silver platters. Gently analyzing him, I realized he had changed since I first found him. When I found him, he was lying in a pool of blood. Flesh was torn from his body and slowly the light from his eyes was draining. Now looking at him, he grew and looked dashing if I can say. “Thank you, Chester, that will be all''. I nodded at him as he left. Removing the lid on my platter, I saw four glasses of freshly poured steaming hot blood. Lifting one glass, I took a sip from it. Watching Novalee open her plastic lid was a mess, but I didn't say anything about it due to not wanting to deal with the insubordinate girl. As we finished our meals, I stood and looked at her, making eye contact. “I am going to my room. You are not allowed in the study room at all. If you are caught, there will be severe consequences and punishments. Chester has written your duties and school hours down. You start a new school tomorrow and there are no ifs and's or but’s in this conversation. School clothes and daily clothes will be set out for you every day, so you know what to wear and when you need to wear them.” Raising an eyebrow as I turned away from her. Reaching the stairs, I closed my eyes before walking up the silver and gold stairs. Slowly and gracefully to my room, I stopped and peered out the window.
