First day

IRENE’S POV

‘Hey bestie’ my best friend Clara said as she skipped towards me. She was the only friend I made after I lost my parents. At first I was scared to get close to her because of how chatty and extroverted she was, and now I do not have a single regret of becoming her best friend, I really do not think I can live without her.

‘Hey girl’ I responded with a huge smile on my face.

I heard about you going undercover for..’ she paused a little and came close to my ear.

‘The Denero family’ she whispered and went back to her position with a questioning look.

Oh shoot, I forgot to tell her about it. I always tell her everything, but I just got carried away trying to draft out the perfect plan without getting caught undercover, so I was too swamped to even remember to tell her anything. I wanted to start spilling everything, but I was already late.

Today was my first day working as Xavier Denero’s assistant, and I was already so late because I stopped by the office to do a short briefing with Jackson.

‘I am really sorry Clara, but I really have to go now, I would tell you everything later’ I said giving her puppy eyes, she just rolled her eyes and signalled for me to go.

I dashed out of the office and boarded a cab to Denero tech. In less than 30 minutes, my cab stopped right in front of the company. It was just like I saw years ago, my parents brought me here when I was 13, I can’t really remember why, but I knew I was here.

I paid the driver and stepped out before proceeding to go in.

I walked towards the receptionist to ask for directions to my new boss’s office.

‘Hello, I am Irene Black, the new assistant to the CEO’ I said with the sweetest voice and smile and voice. I was undercover as this sweet girl, just like Jackson briefed me. It was the best disguise and would not draw a lot of attention to me. Of course, I protested against it.

I wanted to be the nonchalant assistant, but he said it won’t be undercover enough if I was still acting like me, so I just accepted.

‘Hi’ she replied back and typed some things into her computer before facing me.

‘Take the elevator to the 19th, and you would see his office from there’ she said with a smile, and I smiled back, muttering thank you before I took off. This company was huge, and I almost got lost, making my way to the elevator. Thank God for the sounds elevators made, I quickly located it when I heard that ring sound and ran towards it.

Luckily, I caught it in time. It was more packed than I expected, I don’t know what I was expecting, but definitely not this. I smiled nervously as I entered the elevator, body squashed between two men.

I stood there awkwardly as I watched people get down one after the other till I was the only one left in the elevator. I was so relieved and was now comfortable, thank God.

After a while, I finally got to the 19th floor. It was empty, nobody was here, just the huge door in front of me that read Xavier Denero. I thought assistants spaces were usually outside the boss office, but nothing was here.

I knocked on the door in front of me, waiting for a response, but I got none, I knocked repeatedly, but still no response. After a while, I just gave up and barged in.

I saw a chair facing the window with a man clearly on it. I wanted to be angry at how he heard me knocking but decided to act like he was deaf and did not hear me, but then I noticed there was no body in that chair.

‘And who said you could come in’ a calm but dangerous voice sounded, it wasn’t coming from the chair, so my theory was right there was nobody on that chair.

I looked over at the chair intensely, not wanting to respond, but then I remembered I was undercover as a really sweet clueless girl.

‘Hello, I am your new assistant’ I said, almost squealing. The sound of my own voice irritated me, but there was nothing I could do for now.

‘Assistant?’ he said, surprised. ‘And which pack are you from?’ he added, and now I was actually clueless. What exactly was he saying?.

‘Excuse me?’ I said almost disgusted by the question, what was I, an animal? What the f**k is he on?

‘Ooh, clueless, I now know why my dad hired you’ he said and now I was really getting annoyed. Could he just show his face and make a proper introduction, like a normal boss and let’s get it over with. Having a full-blown conversation with a Denero annoyed every single bone in my body.

‘Well if it isn’t my new assistant’ a voice said from my back, and I screamed. Well undercover screamed, he knows I was expecting the voice to come from the chair in front of me and not the back, but I already knew it was obviously a doll seated on that chair not human, we detectives used this technique a lot and there was no way I was going to be fooled by the same technique I used a lot.

I turned back and saw him. Xavier Denero, he was just exactly like I saw on Tv, handsome. With the most deadly blue eyes I have ever seen and had an insane amount of hair.

‘You scared me’ I held my chest as I let out had breath, breathing frantically. He did not look remorseful. He just looked at me dead in the eyes without saying anything. He scanned me with his eyes from head to toe before finally moving towards his chair.

‘You will do, now get out of my sight’ he said coldly without sparing me another glance.

‘Well I don’t have an office yet’ I said timidly.

‘Then go get yourself an office’

‘But...’ I tried saying before he cut me off sharply.

‘Out of my sight’ he said sternly, and I just left the office annoyed.

I wanted to scream and slap him across the face, but I could not do even that, so instead, I mentally screamed and sat outside his office. I took a deep breath and reminded myself I was doing this for my parents.

Xavier Denero, you just wait and see as a make you and your family pay for taking away my parents from me, just wait.
