Brother?

1080 Words
IRENE’S POV I sat on the floor, anxious, waiting for him to call me back or even assign an office to me, but I got nothing after long hours of waiting. I stood up and paced back and forth to pass time, but I eventually grew tired of that. What exactly is his problem? He asked for an assistant and did not even bother to have an office set up for me upon my arrival. What a jerk. After hours of waiting, he finally came out, not surprised to see me still waiting. He looked at me with a cold expression, I could not quite make out what he was thinking. ‘Meet me at the event tonight’ he said coldly and left, without any in-depth explanation on where the so-called event might be. I took a deep breath and pulled myself together. I could just go home and use the excuse that I did not know where the event was holding, but going to that event would expose me to things I might need to know to bring down this family, so I just held all my anger in and relaxed. I entered the elevator and prepared to go to this event. The problem now was that I did not know where this event was happening. I got off and saw the receptionist was still there, I rushed over to her to ask for the directions, but she also didn’t know anything about any event. That was it, I was not going to do this stupid event. Would it have killed him to take me along or even tell me where on earth this stupid event was taking place. I was frustrated and agitated, and what annoyed me the most was that there was nothing I could do about it. I just proceeded to go home. On my way out, I saw Agent Denver, I was shocked to find him here. This was where I was undercover, and I did not expect to see any other agent here. It was not in the file or part of protocol, so I approached him. ‘Hey what are you doing here?’ I asked, and he flinched a little, which got me a little bit concerned. ‘uh.. hey’ he said nervously ‘I came to check up on you’. This gesture from him seemed very suspicious. Yes, we were partners but not close enough for such kind of gestures. ‘Excuse me?’ I asked, confused. ‘Uhm, you missed our date, and I thought I did something wrong, so I came to ask you’ he said. Oh shoot, the date I had agreed to. That date was the last thing on my mind, so there was no shock in how it flew out of my head, and now I felt awkward and bad at the same time. ‘I am so sorry’ I said apologetically. ‘It’s cool’ he said warmly. ‘I get that you don’t like me like that, I just wanted you to give me a chance’. Oh God, now I I feel bad. ‘How can I make it up to you?’ I blurted out without thinking. ‘Really?’ he said with a glint of excitement in his eyes, and I just nodded my head and gave a warm smile. He was my partner after all, this was the least I could do for him. ‘There is this event going on down town, I was wondering if you could be my date’ he said, and I just nodded without saying a word and followed him to his car. Soon after, we were on our way down town. I couldn’t help but wonder if this event had any relation to the event Xavier went to. ‘Hey, what is this event even about?’ I asked him. ‘It has something to do with the Denero family, all agents available were told to guard the place, good thing we are not available’ he said with a small laugh. That has to be the event Xavier told me to meet him at. This event must be really big if they have agents guarding every part of it. I could not wait to get to the event to see what was going on. I looked out the window and just took every moment in. I saw a girl with two peoplewhot looked like her parents and could not help but wonder what my life would be like today if my parents were still alive. Would I have chosen another career path, don’t get me wrong, I love this job, but I wouldn’t have chosen it had my parents not been killed. ‘We are here’ Denver said, breaking me from my thoughts. We pulled into the driveway, and he dropped me at the entrance of the event. ‘I would come find you after I park the car’ he said and drove off. I walked into the event, and it was filled up with so many important people. I felt underdressed, everyone here looked so elegant and expensive and here I was in the long sleeved shirt and trousers I wore in the morning to work, it just felt so awkward. It would be hard to spot Xavier in this crowd, but I did spot some people back from the agency, Denver was right. Agents were everywhere. It didn’t take long for me to spot Agent Jackson talking to a fellow agent, I guess he was the reason this place was crawling with agent, you can never be too careful with the Denero family. ‘Hey Agent’ I said with a slightly loud voice to notify him of my presence. He looked shocked to see me. Like he was not expecting me even though I was now Xavier’s assistant. I just brushed it off. It could be an impulsive feeling and nothing really. ‘Hey what are you doing here’ he said with his eyes roaming about and not on me. Now, that was suspicious. ‘Are you looking for someone?’ I asked. ‘uhm no’ he said rapidly, then immediately held my hands. ‘Let’s talk in somewhere more private’ he said and dragged me off, but we were blocked on the way by Xavier. How did he even find me in this crowd. He was looking at Jackson, and Jackson was looking at him in a really weird way. ‘Hey brother’ Xavier let out, and I froze.
