A Lover's Betrayal
l tipped down my eighth shot of tequila and closed my eyes as the burning sensation went down my throat. Honestly speaking the burning didn’t compare to the ache in my heart. I came here thinking that the alcohol would help calm my thoughts but it only fueled my emotional turmoil more. I had come home from work to find Charles, my fiancé or should I say my ex-fiancé dumped me and disappeared to God knows where. And like the loser he was he couldn’t tell on his face he simply left me a breakup note in our apartment. Even from the dizziness from my heartache and the eight shots of tequila and vodka I could still what his lazy scrawl said, I can’t stay with you any longer, you are not my type it’s time we called off our engagement... I tried reaching his number but the f*****g son of a b***h had blocked me. With my thoughts and the painful heartache all over, I decided to go out and get drunk and maybe when I came back I would find Charles waiting up for me and telling me all this was just one of his silly pranks. But what if it is all true and he has left me? Refusing to dwell much on the possibilities, “Another one” I said to the bartender who was trying to hit on me a couple of minutes ago. “Your liver begs to differ, maybe I get you water instead,” he said to me with his alluring smirk plastered all over his face. "Never mind," I waved him off as I hopped out of the bar stool and mindlessly weaved my way out of the crappy club. I replayed the other part of the note as I made it to the exit and out in the streets. 'I've found a purpose in my life.....I want to travel around the world. and he had signed off the damn thing with a smiley face.' "A purpose," I scoffed A shiver ran down my spine as the cold New York winter breeze hit me. Yeah I know I admit I was a fool for going out during a winter evening without a goddamn coat. Trying to familiarize my whereabouts I pulled out my phone and ordered an Uber and it was fifteen minutes away. I bounced on my heels as I cursed myself for not wearing anything warm, I came here long before nightfall as soon as I saw that letter and I wasn't in the right mind frame. “Hey, do you mind us going over to my house and I can make you scream my name,” a scary-looking dude who leaked beer hovered over me. I shook my head as I walked away from him, luckily he got the message that I was not into him and left me alone. I checked my phone to see how far away my ride was only to find out that it had been cancelled on me. I refreshed the app but there was none available at the moment. I patiently waited reassuring myself that one would show up miraculously. However, the stupid app kept on reassuring me that it was finding my ride for the next thirty minutes. I mentally went through my remaining options, walk home or call my friend Lenny to come and pick me up, despite not wanting him to know that Charles had dumped me. Walking wasn’t an option either since it was late at night, and trust me New York streets especially Brooklyn aren’t the safest to walk at night. So I had only one option left, one which I didn’t want to take, calling Lenny who would lecture me for the next decade about how he was right about Charles not being the perfect match for me. “How I wish I had taken those self-defence classes in college and I could have walked myself home,” I huffed. I dialled the contact on my phone and closed my eyes as I pressed the call button. One ring, two rings…….pick up the phone I mentally pleaded. When I was about to hang up the phone was picked up. “Lenny I can’t find an Uber, could you please come and pick me up from the location I have sent you,” I said brusquely. I was met with silence for what seemed like an eternity. I internally groaned and was about to talk again when “Good evening to you too,” someone on the other side of the line drawled. The voice sounded familiar but I could not exactly where I had heard it before. “Oh sorry, is Lennie around?” I asked. “no, he is already passed out, someone had a wild night today,” came the voice and I could smell the sarcasm through my phone Typical Lennie!! I face palmed myself, so foolish of me to think that I could get a hold of Lennie at this hour of the night. “Are you in any kind of trouble?” the mysterious voice asked and that’s when I remembered whose voice it was, it belonged to the last person I expected to pick up my call. Kyle Giersh, Lennie’s older brother. Kelly Giersch, Lennie's older brother. “No, but I could say am in some kind of predicament, more like uuh…..being stranded and I seem not to find an Uber,” I breathed out. “Goodness Kyla, what the hell are you doing in there at this hour,” came Kyle’s voice after some time. “Don't move, stay right there I am coming to pick you up,” ordered Kyle after a rustling noise and a door bang. I hung up my phone and stuffed it in my blazer’s pocket as I blew some breath and rubbed my palms together hoping to keep myself warm. After about fifteen minutes a blue Rolls-Royce roys pulled up next to me and the passenger window rolled down. Behind the wheel, sat Kyle in his glory with his gaze narrowed at me making me feel as if I could melt from the intensity of his ocean-blue eyes.
