POV: Sarina
I didn’t want to leave the room.
Lying on the enormous bed (which now felt even bigger and emptier than ever), I tormented myself.
He didn’t know if he truly wanted me. He didn’t know if he wouldn’t choose her if I weren’t an obstacle.
Tears streamed down my face. I didn’t want to wipe them away. I had no strength for that, after all.
How does someone not know if they love their own wife? How does someone hesitate when faced with a question like that?
I sighed, feeling the tightness in my throat intensify.
“You need to rest, Sarina.”
Gloria’s soft yet firm voice brought me back to reality. I slowly opened my eyes, meeting her concerned gaze. She held a cup of hot tea, steam rising in delicate spirals.
“I can’t sleep.” My voice came out weaker than I wanted.
She sat beside me, offering the cup.
“If you won’t do it for yourself, do it for your baby.”
My hands trembled as I took the tea. My baby. Zander’s baby.
“Do you think I should tell him?”
“You haven’t told him yet?”
I shook my head.
“With everything happening, I didn’t have the courage. And if he… if he rejects me anyway, Gloria?”
I couldn’t stop the flood of tears and sobs. Now I was crying openly.
Humiliated. That’s how I felt.
Gloria sighed, her expression softening. She placed a gentle hand on my shoulder as she advised:
“I can’t make that decision for you, dear. But think carefully… If he knows, something might change. Or it might not.”
The fear of hearing the wrong answer paralyzed me.
I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself.
“Has Zander returned?”
She nodded.
“Yes, but he said he didn’t want to disturb you. He’s busy with… other things.”
I didn’t need to ask to know that “other things” meant Lillian.
Forcing myself to drink the tea, I tried to ignore the pain simmering inside me.
. . .
POV: Zander
The hall was bustling, and I watched as Lillian moved among the pack members, her practiced smile and perfect posture in place. Today, she began learning what it meant to be a Luna.
And I allowed it.
My wolf growled restlessly within me, and I knew why. He wanted Lillian. By the Goddess, it was unbearably difficult to hold myself back from claiming her right then and there.
But it wasn’t out of love. I didn’t love her. The only woman I truly loved wasn’t here…
Sarina.
I wanted Sarina.
The truth was, I was a damn coward. Rejecting Lillian would mean weakening myself, and I couldn’t afford to be vulnerable. Not with everything happening. Not when I needed to protect my pack.
On the other hand, I couldn’t let go of my wife.
“You’re distracted.”
Lillian’s voice pulled me back, and when I met her gaze, I found her watching me closely.
“I’m just tired.”
She gave a small smile and touched my arm.
“I know. This isn’t easy for either of us.”
I pulled away before she could prolong the contact.
“I have to go.”
“Wait.”
I looked at her again.
“You’re thinking about her, aren’t you?”
My wolf stirred, restless. I didn’t respond.
“You always get that look when you think about her,” Lillian said softly, a hint of accusation in her tone.
“She’s my wife.”
“But that means nothing compared to our bond. Fate decided that—”
“I have to go. I hope you enjoy the training.”
She frowned but didn’t argue.
My steps led me straight to the bedroom. To her.
When I entered, the dim light illuminated Sarina’s face, her hair sprawled across the pillow, her breathing soft and steady.
My chest tightened at the sight of her.
I moved closer, careful not to wake her. Her sweet scent filled my senses, bringing a relief I hadn’t felt in a long time.
I reached out, hesitating before touching her cheek.
“Sarina…”
She stirred slightly, her lashes fluttering, but she didn’t wake.
I stood there, watching her, feeling the crushing weight of my guilt.
I never stopped loving her.
But what was I supposed to do?
How could I balance my love for her and my duty to the pack?
I was a damn weak man.
So I simply lay beside her, without touching her.
I couldn’t stop the tears.
