Chapter 01
POV: Sarina
Nausea. Dizziness. Cold, sweaty skin despite the warm environment and the smiles around me.
I tried to hide it as much as I could. After all, this was an important event—Zander had done everything to make sure this banquet at Silver Springs Pack was perfect.
Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed the Alphas from other packs. Powerful alliances could be forged tonight. I couldn't let these small distractions interfere.
That was when my colleague and physician, Dr. Gloria, stepped closer and took my hand.
"Darling, you don’t look well at all."
I tried to smile and brush it off, but another wave of nausea hit me, and I nearly threw up.
"Come with me. Now."
"But—"
"No 'buts.' Don't argue with me, young lady."
Unable to resist, I noticed Zander glancing at me; a flicker of concern in his eyes, but soon I was too far to see his expression.
The air inside the infirmary was cooler than in the hall. Or maybe it was just me, my skin still sticky with sweat from the nausea.
Gloria watched me with that clinical yet maternal gaze.
"Your symptoms are common, Sarina, but I need to confirm something," she said, grabbing a small device and a test kit.
I nodded, still dizzy, feeling my heart hammer against my ribs as she performed the procedure. The silence in the room became heavy. I was anxious, but also terrified.
Then, the tension broke with a gentle smile on the she-wolf’s lips.
"Congratulations, my friend… you’re pregnant."
The world seemed to stop for a moment.
I blinked, processing her words.
"I am…?"
She nodded, squeezing my hand.
"Yes, sweetheart. It finally happened."
I placed my hand on my abdomen, as if I could feel the new life growing inside me. After so many attempts, after thinking it would never happen, now it was real.
I swallowed hard, my vision slightly blurred by the tears threatening to fall.
"Zander…" I whispered. "I need to tell him."
Gloria squeezed my hand.
"Maybe wait until after the banquet. He’s focused on securing alliances with the other Alphas tonight."
A part of me wanted to run to him right now and tell him. But Gloria was right. Zander would be happy about the news, but if I interrupted something important, his initial frustration might ruin the moment.
"You’re right," I murmured. "I’ll tell him when we’re alone."
I took a deep breath, wiping the sweat from my forehead. I needed to return to the hall and act normal. But how could I, when all I wanted to do was jump with joy?
. . .
As soon as I reentered the grand hall, the murmur of conversations and the glow of the torches hit me like a wave.
The Alphas from neighboring packs were gathered in small groups, speaking in hushed tones. I spotted Zander at the center of one of these circles, seated at a luxurious table. His imposing posture and sharp gaze made it clear that he was the leader here.
I took a deep breath and walked toward him.
"Darling," I called softly, placing my hand on his arm.
He turned to me, his gaze tight with tension.
"You took too long," he said, his voice low but firm.
"It was nothing serious. Just a little dizziness. Nothing to worry about."
His eyes scanned me from head to toe, and for a second, I thought he would insist on knowing more. But, luckily for me, one of the Alphas interrupted with a comment, and my husband turned his attention back to the conversation.
I stood by his side, listening but not absorbing any of the words being exchanged. My mind was elsewhere, thinking about the baby.
Minutes dragged by, and I could barely focus. My heart was racing, my hand still resting on Zander’s arm, as if that touch could anchor my thoughts.
I needed to tell him.
But then I noticed.
My man was restless.
His fingers drummed against the table, his jaw was clenched, and the muscles in his shoulders were tense beneath the fabric of his shirt. Something was bothering him.
The Alpha in front of him, a burly man named Edgar, laughed at something, but Zander didn’t react. He only drank from his glass with more force than necessary.
"Darling?" I murmured, squeezing his arm.
He let out a long sigh, turning to me with an impatient expression.
"Can you please stop touching me?" His voice was low but sharp like a blade.
I blinked, surprised.
"I just—"
"Just what, Sarina? Do you need to cling to me all night?"
A knot formed in my throat.
The Alphas around us fell silent, watching our exchange. The humiliation burned my skin.
"That wasn’t my intention," I murmured.
Zander chuckled, a short, humorless sound.
"No? Then what was it? You disappear during the banquet, come back acting strange, and now you keep staring at me like I’m the only interesting thing in this damn hall?"
His words were a blow.
I had never seen him like this. Never. Irritated, cruel. We had disagreements, but he had never spoken to me like this in front of others.
The urge to tell him about the baby withered inside me instantly.
"Can we talk in private?" I whispered, trying to stay calm.
He huffed, running a hand through his hair.
"Not now. I have more important matters to handle."
I stood there, frozen, as he turned back to the other Alphas as if nothing had happened.
My eyes burned, but I wouldn’t let the tears fall here.
"Is everything alright, Luna?" Edgar’s voice was laced with curiosity and false concern.
I nodded, forcing a smile.
"Of course, Alpha Edgar. Just a small misunderstanding."
I needed to get out of there.
I turned, trying to slip away unnoticed, but before I could take a step, Zander grabbed my wrist.
"And where are you going now?" His voice was laced with impatience.
"What’s wrong with you?" I asked, unable to hold back my frustration.
"With me? What’s wrong with YOU? You’re acting like you have some huge secret and expect me to just ignore it?"
My breath hitched.
He knew?
But before I could answer, he let go of my wrist and stepped away, turning back to the other Alphas.
I felt small.
Unnecessary.
Swallowing hard, I left the hall without looking back.
In the dark corridor, I leaned against the wall, trying to breathe.
This was supposed to be one of the happiest days of my life.
So why did my heart hurt so much?
