Patrols

Michael’s point of view             As promised I was getting ready for patrols. I always joined patrols a few times a week but now it seems I am running them by myself pretty much every day as we were spread so thin. With the increased numbers of patrols, thanks to rogue attacks, the partner system I liked to have in place was harder to follow. The only patrols that I would not allow people to run by themselves in any circumstances were the night patrols. Right now I was heading out for an afternoon patrol near the Stonebrook side of my territory. I would return before sunset, showing my pack that even the Alpha wasn’t exempt from the rules. There were a few hot headed warriors that felt like they could handle night runs by themselves.             I did a few stretches outside Lunar castle before running towards Stonebrook. I figured this was going to be a long boring patrol I might as well get some exercise while I am at it. I would let Ash run on the way back I wanted to feel the air for a bit in my human form. Once I got to the side of the forest I was in charge of for the afternoon I slowed down and started looking for anything to be amiss. If a rogue made it this far into my territory, then we would have failed at our job of keeping them out. We knew the witch in Stonebrook is their target even if we weren’t certain about why. They had been fighting hard to get through our territory to the village and luckily have failed at every attempt so far.             I sniffed the air. While the forest was always green and full of life over here I have always hated it. There was a particular flower that grew in abundance here and it over powered my heighten wolf sense of smell making it hard to distinguish any other scent. That meant in this section I had to rely more on my hearing and vision than on my sense of smell. The only thing I could hear at the moment was the sound of birds and the bauble of the creek. I wandered around not noticing anything unusual; no broken branches, claw marks, or anything else that would tell me a rogue was around.             I walked a bit father then suddenly stopped. A new smell more powerful than the flowers overwhelmed my senses. It smelled like warm vanilla twirling in the mist. I know that sounds strange but that is exactly what it smelled like and was the most calming scent to me and was drawing me towards it.             MATE!! Ash screamed in my head making me reach for the sides of my head.     Could that be true. Was I smelling my mate. The smell of your mate was supposed to be the most addictive smell in the world. But who would be out on this side of the territory. Most of the werewolves steered clear of Stonebrook and anything to do with witches.     MATE! Ash shouted again getting in patient. We must go find mate.     Right! Let’s go see who she is. She better not be one the rogues we are trying to stop.     Ash focused on the smell. She doesn’t smell like a werewolf. Maybe she is a human on a hike?     This far from the human town, I doubt it. But let’s go find out.     Focusing on the task at hand I started walking full speed towards the scent. As I got closer I was careful my footsteps weren’t too loud. I didn’t want to startle her away before I even saw her. If she was a werewolf she would be able to feel the pull of the bond and smell me as strongly as I smell her. I wonder what I smell like to her? The smell you give off to your mate is different than the smell anyone else picks up as they walk by you. But if she isn’t a werewolf what would the bond feel like to her?      I saw her a little further down and I my heart just stopped. I quickly ducked behind a tree trying to make my breathing quieter as I started to freak out. The blue and red hair was unmistakable. Not only was she a witch but she was the one that the rogues were after that might be a threat to us as well.     What are you doing. That is mate, go to her. Ash     She is a witch.     So? She is mate. That is all that matters.     A witch. I was prepared to accept a human as my mate. But a witch? Could I accept a witch as my mate?     Move i***t, she is walking away. Me must go meet our mate. We must protect mate.     I shook my head. Despite Ash persistently urging me on, I couldn’t wrap my head around the fact that my mate was a witch and convince my feet to move from where they were currently rooted to the ground. An Alpha’s mate was a witch. Which meant a witch was destined to become the Luna of a werewolf pack. What sick twist of fate was that. Witches and werewolves had been enemies ever since I could remember. Yet her I was protecting my mate from rogue attacks before I even knew she was my mate. To be fair protecting her protected my pack from her being used as a weapon against us. How messed up would that be? If my mate was the one to finally take down Lunar pack once and for all.     Do you hear me, Michael? We need to move before she is back in Stonebrook territory.     Right. I gulped. Finding the will to move my feet. I needed to find out why she was in Lunar territory to begin with. Witches are not allowed on our land just like we are not allowed in theirs. I could focus on that, as the information might very well be vital to my pack’s survival and deal with her being my mate later.
