Rae's point of view
Well I don't know how the village is going to react but I need to finish getting ready for the ceremony. Though I do want to test my powers first.
Alex was still standing dumb struck as I rushed passed him down the stairs, through the kitchen, and out the back door. I stopped in our garden looking around for an easy way to test out my powers. I glanced over at our little fountain bubbling quietly in the center as flowers of all colors bloomed around it. I took a few steps towards it. I lifted my hand extending my fingers towards the water and concentrated. The water easily floated up and out of the bowl. I quickly moved my hands controlling the water pouring it over every plants in the garden one at a time. Might as well get a chore out of the way while I'm at it.
With that done it was time to test fire. I cupped my hand and focused on it. This time willing it to form a small ball of fire. A few seconds passed and nothing happened. I guess I only have one power. Then, right as I was about to give up, a small flame appeared. I went back to focusing on it causing it to grow and shape into a ball. I let the flame go out and relaxed my body. It wasn't as easy as the water was to control but the power was still there. I wonder.... I ignited the flame in my left hand again, this time with a lot less effort, while reaching for the water with my right hand. The water quickly came forming a ball in my right hand. I heard shuffling behind me and turned around still holding both a water ball and a fire ball. Even children can't practice two forms of magic at once. They have to stop whichever one they are doing first to try out the next. Our bodies generally just can't handle the flow of 2 different powers at once. Yet somehow I am managing it.
Alex, "How are you doing that?"
I shrugged dropping my hands and ending the magic, "I really don't know. I have never tried to control both at once before."
Alex, "I don’t think you would have been able to. Your eyes have never shifted colors until today. I heard that once a powerful witch or wizard turns 16 they gain their full power and their eyes turn to match as a warning to others not to mess with them. You wouldn't have had access to your full power until today when your eyes shifted. But no one in our family has ever had their eyes shift. Where did you get your power?"
"Someone in our bloodline must have had power. Right?... I wish we could ask Mom and Dad." They had both been murdered by werewolves during the war. But it wasn't on a fighting front. They were just collecting herbs by the pond a few miles from the village when they were attacked. Neither of them were armed and their magic wasn't meant for a fight. My dad was a healer like my brother though not as skilled. He was collecting herbs to strengthen his magic as he healed wounded warriors coming back from the main battle field. My mother had beautiful silver hair and was a metalworker. She was very limited in her powers and could only shape small pieces of metal to make jewelry or silverware. Including the ring that was currently on my right ring finger. Woven with magic to always fit my finger. I have worn it every day since I was 8. My mother had set sapphires and rubies into it representing my two favorite forms of magic. She had said she would replace the stones to match my chosen magic on my ceremony day. She never got the chance to see it and I was planning on having a skilled jewelry replace the stones after today to match her wishes but I guess she had made it perfectly back then without even realizing it.
My brother wrapped me in his arms knowing what was on my mind. "Don't worry sis, I am here for you. Mom and Dad would want this to be a happy day for you and they would be very proud. And it looks like Mom has given you the perfect ceremony gift after all."
I nodded heading back into the house to get something to eat.
....
A few hours later I was standing on the stage in the main square facing everyone from the village. Normally about half the village would show to a ceremony but word had gotten around about my dual hair color and the square was packed. I smiled at everyone trying not to be nervous as I stepped up to ceremonial flame to confirm my chosen power. I reached out my hand touching the flame feeling the slight buzz of magic but no heat. The flame shifted to show blue then red then both swirling together like it didn't quite know how to show both. I don't think the village elders have ever seen the flame be more the one color before because I heard a shocked gasp come from the row where they were seated. No one was clapping besides my brother as I looked around the square. They were all too shocked and confused. You can't be two I heard people shouting. Murmuring spread through the crowd. No one knew what to make of me. There was anger, fear, confusion, and awe sweeping across people’s faces. I gulped. I have never been afraid of my village but in this moment I was. Alex jumped up on stage and ushered me away the elders following us on our heels directing us to their chambers.
