Chapter 4 John’s world crumbled as he grappled with the revelation of his father’s role in his mother’s death. Love, once a source of warmth and light, now felt like a stranger. The betrayal was a constant ache in his chest, a wound that refused to heal. Resentment festered, consuming him like a slow poison. He directed most of it toward his father and Isabella, his stepmother, though they were blissfully unaware of the storm brewing inside him. At home, John avoided them like the plague. He rarely spoke, retreating to the solace of his room or the comfort of solitude in nearby parks. When he did eat, it was often outside, far from their watchful eyes. His father and Isabella, though concerned, assumed his behavior stemmed from grief. They gave him space, unaware of the real reason for his withdrawal. Meanwhile, Alara couldn’t stop thinking about John. Their last encounter had left her unsettled, his distant demeanor gnawing at her. She decided to visit her best friend, Lily, hoping to clear her mind. The two talked about mundane things, but Alara couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. Lily seemed distracted, her gaze distant, and her voice lacked its usual warmth. “You’ve been quiet lately,” Alara said, probing gently. “Is everything okay?” Lily forced a smile. “I’m fine, just tired.” But Alara wasn’t convinced. She sensed a heaviness in Lily’s words, a sadness she couldn’t ignore. When she casually brought up John, Lily’s expression darkened, and her body stiffened. The change was subtle but undeniable. Lily excused herself to grab drinks, leaving her phone on the table. Moments later, it buzzed, the screen lighting up with an incoming call. Without thinking, Alara picked it up. “Hello?” she said tentatively. The voice on the other end was deep and menacing. “I’m coming soon. When I do, you’d better comply, or you’ll regret it, bitch.” The call ended abruptly, leaving Alara stunned. Her hands shook as she placed the phone back on the table. When Lily returned, Alara stayed silent, her mind racing. Whoever had called wasn’t just angry—they were dangerous. Determined to help her friend, Alara tried tracking the number later that night, but it was heavily encrypted. Frustrated, she decided to seek John’s help. The next day, she confronted him in the park where he often went to escape. “John,” she called out, jogging toward him. He turned, his expression cold and distant. “What do you want?” “I need your help,” she said, catching her breath. “It’s about Lily. Someone’s threatening her. I think she’s in danger.” John’s eyes narrowed, but his tone remained detached. “I don’t care.” Alara blinked, taken aback. “You don’t care? John, this is serious! She could get hurt!” “That’s not my problem,” he replied flatly. The bitterness in his voice stunned her. She realized then that John’s anger toward his father had bled into every aspect of his life, turning him cold and indifferent. It wasn’t that he hated Lily—he simply didn’t care enough to act. “Fine,” Alara said, her voice shaking with frustration. “If you won’t help, I’ll figure it out myself.” She stormed off, leaving John alone with his thoughts. Later that evening, John’s phone rang incessantly, the caller ID displaying an unknown number. Annoyed, he finally answered. “It’s time you learned the truth,” an elderly voice said. “Come to Eldoria. You’ll find the answers you’ve been seeking.” The caller was John’s grandfather, a man he had never met. Intrigued but cautious, John traced the call. To his shock, it originated from Hyperion Tech Industries, one of the world’s leading technology companies. Eldoria, a distant country across the globe, seemed impossibly far—until he remembered Kaia. She had mentioned her upcoming trip to Eldoria during a brief conversation weeks ago. Determined, John sought her out that night. Under the cover of darkness, he climbed the tree outside Kaia’s bedroom window and tapped on the glass. Startled, she opened the window. “John? What are you doing here?” “I need to go to Eldoria with you,” he said bluntly. Kaia’s heart raced. She had always admired John from afar, though she never dared to act on her feelings. His sudden appearance left her flustered, but she quickly masked her excitement. “Why would you want to come with me?” she asked, skeptical. “I can’t explain,” he said, his tone firm. “But I need your help.” After some negotiation, they struck a deal: John would pretend to be her boyfriend to convince her parents to let him join the trip. The next day, Kaia introduced John to her parents as her new boyfriend. To her surprise, they approved, and within days, arrangements were made for him to accompany them to Eldoria. When they arrived, John was greeted by his grandfather, a towering man with a commanding presence. They met in the sprawling headquarters of Hyperion Tech, its sleek design a testament to the family’s legacy of innovation. “You’re here because it’s time you claimed what’s rightfully yours,” his grandfather said, his voice firm. “This company was meant for your mother. She was supposed to inherit it, but I gave her a condition: she had to marry within a circle of my choosing. She refused and ran off with your father. I cut her off, hoping she’d return. Instead, she chose him over her legacy.” John listened silently, his expression unreadable. “Now, it’s your turn to take her place,” his grandfather continued. “You have the same brilliance, the same potential. It’s in your blood.” John’s eyes flickered with interest, but he said nothing. “There’s one more thing,” his grandfather added. “To secure Hyperion’s future, you’ll marry Amara Sinclair, the daughter of a key business ally. With her family’s resources, the company will grow by 65% overnight.” John agreed without hesitation, shocking his grandfather. Marriage meant little to him; his only concern was securing the inheritance. Amara Sinclair was breathtakingly beautiful, with striking features and a magnetic presence. Yet, as they sat in his grandfather’s office, John’s indifference was evident. “You don’t care about this marriage, do you?” Amara asked, watching him closely. “No,” he replied coldly. “If you love someone else, keep loving them. I’m here for the company, not you.” Surprised by his honesty, Amara smiled faintly. “Then we have a deal. I’ll play my role, and you’ll play yours. But don’t expect me to fall in love with you.” “Perfect,” John said, his tone devoid of emotion. As the deal was struck, John’s focus returned to the intricate codes and designs on the screen before him. For the first time, he felt a flicker of purpose—not for love, but for power and control. Little did he know, this was only the beginning.
