She runs from Charlotte pregnant and heartbroken after a headline showed Ryan Oliver—her Ryan—engaged and hands on another woman’s baby bump. Three years later in Galway, she builds something small and safe with her son Josh, her mom, and cousin Jason’s quiet care. Mrs. Victoria arrives and confesses: Stephanie’s pregnancy was a lie Ryan only learned about after Madison left; he never married her. *CHAPTER 1 - The Night Everything Changed*
I heard the story later. Piece by piece, from a trusty maid I had asked Luke to get me. But at that time, it was already too late. Mom found Stephanie staring out the window, arms folded like she owned the place. “How did dinner go?” Mom asked, glancing around the dining room. “Where’s Ryan?” Stephanie’s face fell. She knew how to play it. “Urgent business, as always. He left mid-dinner.” She sighed, dramatic. “He doesn’t want me, Mrs. Oliver. I won’t force myself on him. Every time he lets me down, it hurts.” She stepped closer to Mom and lowered her voice. “No one can tame him. He won’t listen to anyone. I think he’s in love with someone else. And if that’s the case, Thompson Tech will have to find another company to merge with.” That was the threat. That was always the threat. Mom’s expression hardened. I’d never defied her before. Losing the Thompsons wasn’t an option. She patted Stephanie’s back. “Don’t worry. He’ll listen to me.” “You have a plan?” Stephanie asked. Too eager. Too desperate. Mom smiled. Cold. The smile that built this empire. “Call your father. Tell him you’re staying the night.” “Okay, Mum,” Stephanie said, smiling back. --- _9 PM_ I walked in, exhaustion dragging at me. My smirk faded the second I saw Mom on the sofa by the window. “Stephanie’s staying the night,” she said before I could speak. “I’ve got work,” I replied, heading for the stairs. Knowing mom, if I'd stayed downstairs she'd raise the dinner topic. She'd talk about Stephanie_the Thompsons requesting a fixed wedding date_the merger… and all I needed at that moment was silence. “I’ll send coffee to your study,” she said, casually, eyes not leaving her iPad. In the kitchen, the mug was already half-filled. Mom dismissed the maids. From her robe pocket she pulled a small container. “For your own good, Ry,” she muttered. The maid watched everything in hiding. Mom sprinkled powder into the coffee and stirred. --- She set the mug on my desk just as I stepped out of the bathroom, towel around my waist. Hair dripping on my shoulders. “Did you apologize to Stephanie?” she asked. “I had something urgent,” I said, rubbing my temple. My head already pounding. “Who is she, Ryan?” Mom pressed. “I know you’re seeing someone. I do not approve.” “Mom, please—” “No. You won’t throw away a marriage to a girl from a prestigious family. Your father and Mr. Thompson were close friends. He’d want this for you and for the sake of The Olivers Empire.” She pushed the mug forward, gesturing me to drink. My temple throbbed. I rubbed it, picking up the mug and drank. The coffee smelled normal but the taste… bitter. Maybe a little too bitter. I should've hesitated. I should've asked why it tasted wrong. I should've waited for info from the maid, she would have warned me on time. If only she had gotten to me first before that coffee. “I only want what's best for you, Ry and I know that someday, you'll understand.” With that said, mom left the room. --- _Later_ The room spun. Heat crawled under my skin. I stumbled onto the balcony, desperate for air. My head felt like it would split. I couldn't explain this new feeling. I heard footsteps... A soft voice… Hands on my chest. I reached out, my vision blurred. I brushed hair from her face. I thought it was Madison. It had to be Madison. “Madison,” I whispered before the world went black. --- _Next Morning_ A heavy pounding in my skull. I opened my eyes. Stephanie was asleep against my chest. We were half covered by the sheets. My shorts were on the floor. My blood ran cold. “What?! What happened? Did we—” I couldn’t finish the sentence. Stephanie sat up, pulling the sheets to her chest, blushing. “You don’t remember? Mom sent me to check on you. We talked, you said I looked good, then we…” She trailed off, covering her face like she was shy. “No. Tell me this is a joke.” My voice broke. “It’s not,” she whispered. Madison’s face flashed in my mind. Her laugh. The way she looked at me yesterday like I was her safe place. Like I was human, not just Oliver Enterprises’ CEO. Oh no. What have I done? _TBC…_
