Chapter 1 – The Captive
The forest smelled of blood and smoke. Elara’s lungs burned as she ran, her bare feet slapping against wet leaves. She didn’t know why the hunters were after her — she wasn’t even a wolf, just a human girl trying to survive another day. But the moment their silver-tipped arrows hissed past her head, something deep in her chest stirred. A pull. A whisper. Like the night itself wanted her to keep running. Branches whipped across her skin, leaving stinging welts. Her heart thundered in her ears, her breath ragged, but she couldn’t stop. Behind her, the howls of wolves mingled with the shouts of men. Whoever they were, they wanted her alive… or maybe dead. Suddenly, the forest fell silent. She stumbled into a clearing — and froze. A man stood there, tall and terrifying, as though the shadows themselves had shaped him. His eyes glowed a predatory gold, piercing through the dark. Broad shoulders filled with raw power, dark hair clinging to his jaw from the rain, and an aura so dangerous it made the air feel heavier. He didn’t look human. He looked like a nightmare made flesh. “Found you,” the stranger growled. His voice was deep, commanding, and laced with something darker… hunger. Before Elara could turn, he was on her — faster than sight, pinning her wrists against a tree. Her body trembled under his grip. His scent hit her next: smoke, cedar, and the sharp tang of danger. Her heart pounded wildly, but it wasn’t just fear. It was something she couldn’t explain — like her soul was responding to his. “You don’t know me,” he said, eyes locked on hers. “But your blood sings to mine. The Moon Goddess chose you.” Elara shook her head, terrified. “I-I’m not one of you. You’re mistaken.” The man’s lips curled into a bitter smirk. “I am Alpha Draven. And you…” he leaned closer, his breath warm against her ear, “…are my cursed mate.” Elara’s knees nearly buckled. “No… that’s not possible.” He released her wrists only to grip her chin, forcing her to meet his gaze. “Whether you accept it or not, the bond is already there. You feel it too, don’t you? That fire in your blood?” Her lips parted, but no sound came out. She hated it — hated that he was right. The bond pulled at her, a magnetic force wrapping chains around her heart. But he was a stranger. A monster. An Alpha. From the trees, a silver arrow whistled through the air. Draven caught it mid-flight with one hand, snapping it in half like a twig. His golden eyes burned brighter as he glanced back toward the forest. “They won’t stop until they kill you,” he said, his voice low and dangerous. “And if you die… the curse kills me too.” Elara’s breath caught. “What curse?” Draven’s gaze returned to her, sharp and unreadable. “You’ll learn soon enough. For now, you belong to me.” Before she could protest, he lifted her as though she weighed nothing, slinging her over his shoulder. Her fists pounded against his back, but he didn’t even flinch. The last thing she saw before the darkness of his forest swallowed them was the broken silver arrow glowing faintly in the mud… like a warning.
