Chapter 1: The Ash on the Altar
Chapter 1: The Ash on the Altar
The scent of roasting venison and fermented honey mead drifted heavily through the grand hall of the Bloodmoon Pack, but to Seraphina, the air tasted only of cold ash.
She stood near the kitchen doorways, her hands wrapped tightly in a frayed linen apron. Around her, hundreds of pack members cheered beneath banners of deep crimson and black. Lanterns forged from dark star-iron swung from the vaulted timber ceiling, casting flickering amber light over the carved wooden tables loaded with food. Tonight was the Harvest Solstice—and more importantly, it was the eighteenth birthday of Alpha Kaelen.
It was also Seraphina’s eighteenth birthday. But no one raised a goblet for her.
While the rest of the pack spent their eighteenth year undergoing the sacred First Shift, running wild beneath the full moon to embrace their inner wolf spirits, Seraphina had remained trapped in fragile human flesh. For six years, ever since her mother died under mysterious circumstances in the outer woods, Seraphina had been stripped of her family name, relegated to the rank of an omega servant, and forced to scrub stone floors until her knuckles bled.
"Move, worthless girl!"
A heavy hand slammed into Seraphina’s shoulder, sending her stumbling forward against the edge of a serving table. She caught her balance, her heart hammering against her ribs, as her stepsister, Victoria, swept past her. Victoria wore a gown of shimmering crimson silk, cut low at the neck to display a flawless, pale throat. Her golden hair fell in cascading curls, and her lips were painted the color of fresh blood.
"If you drop a single cup of mead tonight, Seraphina, I’ll have the pack guards throw you to the hounds," Victoria sneered, leaning in close so only Seraphina could hear her sweet, venomous whisper. "Alpha Kaelen doesn't need the smell of a pathetic, wolf-less servant ruining his ceremony."
Seraphina kept her eyes cast downward, staring at the worn leather of her boots. "Yes, Victoria."
"That's Lady Victoria to you," Victoria snapped, slapping Seraphina’s cheek with the back of her manicured hand. The sharp ring on her finger cut across Seraphina’s cheekbone, leaving a stinging line of heat. "Go to the back pantry and bring out the ceremonial wine. The Alpha is about to call his mate."
Victoria turned on her heel and glided toward the high dais at the center of the hall, her laughter joining the roaring crowd.
Seraphina touched her fingers to her stinging cheek. She pulled them back, expecting blood, but found only a tiny drop of clear, hot liquid that sizzled faintly against her skin before vanishing. She frowned, a strange, burning heat swirling deep within her stomach—a sensation that had been growing steadily stronger every day for the past month. It wasn't the wild, restless itch of a wolf spirit waking up in the bone. It felt heavier, older, like molten gold pulsing through her veins.
She shook her head, forcing the feeling down, and walked toward the kitchen threshold.
Deep down, despite the years of physical cruelty, emotional starvation, and relentless humiliation, a small, fragile embers of hope still burned within her chest. Tonight was the night the Moon Goddess revealed true mate bonds. Even if a wolf had not yet shifted, the divine bond transcended rank, power, and physical form. If the Moon Goddess gave her a mate—even a low-ranking warrior or an outer guard—Seraphina would finally have a way out. She would have someone to protect her, someone to hold her, someone to claim her as their equal.
Just one person, she prayed silently, looking up through the high clerestory windows at the glowing white face of the full moon. Just grant me one soul who sees me.
A sudden hush fell over the roaring hall.
Seraphina paused at the edge of the shadows as the heavy brass ceremonial gong chimed three times. The sound reverberated through the stone walls, vibrating in the marrow of everyone present.
At the center of the high platform stood Alpha Kaelen.
He was the absolute ideal of a northern wolf Alpha—broad-shouldered, six-foot-four, with jet-black hair cut sharp at the jaw and piercing golden eyes that burned with predatory authority. The heavy fur mantle of the Bloodmoon Pack rested across his broad shoulders, secured by a silver clasp shaped like a howling wolf. At twenty-three, he had already led three successful border raids against rogue factions, establishing himself as one of the most ruthless young Alphas in the eastern territories.
Kaelen stepped up to the edge of the dais, his golden eyes sweeping across the hundreds of bowed heads in the room.
"Brothers and sisters of the Bloodmoon!" Kaelen’s voice boomed through the hall, laced with the natural, command-heavy tone of an Alpha. "Tonight, beneath the full light of our Mother Goddess, our pack stands at the height of its power! Our borders are secure, our granaries are full, and our claws are sharp!"
A deafening roar erupted from the warriors, fists slamming against the heavy wooden tables in rhythm.
Kaelen raised his hand, silencing the crowd instantly. "To solidify our bloodline and ensure our pack’s dominance for the next hundred years, the divine bond must be recognized tonight. Moon Goddess, hear your son! Reveal the female whose soul matches mine!"
Kaelen closed his eyes, throwing his head back toward the moonlit skylight. He took a deep, shuddering breath, opening his senses to the ethereal pull of the mate bond—the divine scent trail that only fated mates could project to one another.
Down by the kitchen archway, Seraphina felt a violent, electrifying shock snap through her spine!
It felt as though an invisible wire connecting her heart to the center of the room had suddenly snapped taut. Her lungs seized, her vision flared with blinding silver light, and her blood boiled under her skin. A thick, intoxicating scent flooded her senses—rich cedarwood, heavy ozone, and fresh rain on dark soil.
Seraphina gasped, her hands flying to her chest. Her heart pounded like a war drum against her ribs.
It's him.
The thought crashed through her mind with terrifying clarity. The divine law of the universe was absolute. Out of all the thousands of wolves in the northern territories, her soul was tethered directly to Alpha Kaelen.
Across the room, Kaelen snapped his eyes open. His golden irises dilated until they were nearly black. He gasped, dropping his broad hands to the edge of the wooden railing as he caught the faint, undeniable pull of the bond.
"She is here," Kaelen growled, his deep voice carrying a strange, raspy tremor.
The crowd held its collective breath. Victoria stepped forward on the dais, a triumphant, brilliant smile gracing her face as she extended her hand toward Kaelen, fully expecting him to reach for her. She had spent two years ensuring Kaelen believed she was his destined Luna, using her father's political influence and her own beauty to cement her place at his side.
But Kaelen did not look at Victoria.
His head snapped toward the shadowy back corner of the hall, his eyes locking directly onto Seraphina.
The hall fell into an agonizing, suffocating silence. Hundreds of heads turned, following the Alpha's fixed stare. The smiles faded from the faces of the pack elders. The warriors frowned, their brows furrowing in disgust.
Standing in the dim light of the servant’s corridor, dressed in a stained gray tunic and frayed apron, was the wolf-less servant girl.
Victoria’s smile instantly withered into a mask of pure rage. Her hands clenched into tight fists at her sides, her nails biting into her palms. "Kaelen... no. That's impossible. Look at her!"
Seraphina’s legs trembled, but a sudden, overwhelming wave of emotion washed over her—a mixture of disbelief, relief, and desperate hope. The Moon Goddess hadn't forgotten her. She wasn't worthless. She was the destined Luna of the greatest pack in the region.
Taking a slow, hesitant step forward out of the shadows, Seraphina looked into Kaelen's golden eyes. "Kaelen..." she whispered softly, the name tasting sacred on her tongue.
Kaelen stared at her, his jaw tightening so hard the muscles jumped beneath his skin. The electric pull of the bond was pulsing through his veins, demanding that he step down from the dais, gather her into his arms, and mark her throat before the entire pack.
He saw her thin, fragile frame. He saw the red welt bleeding across her cheekbone. He saw the frayed clothing, the dirt under her fingernails, and the complete absence of an inner wolf spirit.
To take her as his Luna meant parading a weak, wolf-less orphan before the High Council of Alphas. It meant inviting ridicule from rival packs. It meant throwing away the massive military alliance Victoria’s noble bloodline brought to his borders.
A look of deep, bitter disgust settled over Kaelen’s striking features.
He took a slow step back from the edge of the platform, as if her very presence was a disease.
"No," Kaelen spat, his voice cold, sharp, and dripping with absolute contempt.
Seraphina froze in her tracks, her chest tightening so violently she couldn't breathe. "Kaelen... please..."
"I, Alpha Kaelen of the Bloodmoon Pack," his voice boomed out across the hall, carrying the weight of an iron hammer crashing onto an anvil, "hereby reject you, Seraphina, as my fated mate and Luna!"
The words struck Seraphina like a physical blow.
A agonizing, searing pain ripped through her sternum, as if her soul were being torn in half by rusted claws! She fell to her knees on the cold stone floor, a strangled scream bursting from her throat as the divine bond shattered into pieces within her spirit. The heat in her blood surged dangerously, fighting against the rejection, screaming for release.
Laughter broke out across the hall—first from Victoria, then spreading through the pack elders and down to the warriors at the drinking tables.
"A wolf-less mate for an Alpha? What a joke!"
"The Moon Goddess must have been mocking us!"
"Look at her crying on the floor like a dog!"
Victoria stepped down from the dais, her silk heels clicking sharply against the stone as she walked up to the kneeling girl. She reached down, grabbing a handful of Seraphina’s long, ash-brown hair, and yanked her head back so she was forced to look at Kaelen.
"You heard your Alpha, servant," Victoria purred venomously, her voice ringing out for everyone to hear. "You are rejected. You are nothing. And a useless, broken thing like you has no place in the Bloodmoon Pack."
Victoria turned her eyes up to Kaelen, her expression turning sweet and manipulative. "Alpha, a rejected mate who carries no wolf spirit is a curse upon our lands. She brings dishonor to your name simply by breathing our air. I demand she be banished to the Forbidden Mountains!"
The hall went quiet again, waiting for the Alpha's verdict.
Seraphina looked up through tears of blinding pain, meeting Kaelen’s cold, unfeeling gaze one last time. "Kaelen... don't do this... the mountains... nothing survives up there..."
Kaelen didn't even blink. He looked at Victoria, then turned his back on Seraphina completely.
"Drag her to the border line," Kaelen commanded cold-heartedly to the pack guards. "Strip her of her name. If she sets foot on Bloodmoon territory again, kill her on sight."
Two heavy-set pack guards stepped forward, grabbing Seraphina by her arms and hauling her roughly to her feet. As they dragged her backward out of the grand hall, her boots scraping helplessly against the floor, she watched Victoria wrap her arms around Kaelen’s waist, leaning up to kiss his cheek while the pack erupted into joyous cheers.
The heavy oak doors slammed shut, plunging Seraphina into the freezing darkness of the northern night.
