CHAPTER 1: THE MAN WITHOUT A NAME
Rain poured over the city, turning the streets into mirrors of broken neon. Inside an abandoned warehouse, Kai Mercer stood motionless beside a cracked window. His dark coat was damp from the rain, but he barely noticed. His attention was fixed on the building across the street. A small light flickered on the third floor. His earpiece came alive. “Agent K-17, do you have visual?” Kai raised his binoculars. A man entered the room. “Visual confirmed.” “Target identified as Daniel Vale. Former intelligence officer. You have authorization to proceed.” Kai watched the man carefully. Daniel Vale had disappeared from government records three years earlier. According to the agency, he had stolen classified information and betrayed his country. Kai had been given one simple order. Find him. End the mission. Leave no questions behind. Kai had completed hundreds of assignments. He had never questioned an order. Until tonight. “Control,” Kai said quietly. “I need thirty seconds.” “Negative. Proceed immediately.” Kai frowned. Something was wrong. His handler sounded different. Before he could respond, movement caught his attention. Someone else had entered the room. Kai raised his binoculars. His entire body went still. The second man stepped into the light. Kai stared. His heart began pounding. The man had his face. The same dark hair. The same sharp jaw. The same small scar above his eyebrow. Even the same black watch. Kai lowered the binoculars. “What the hell…” His earpiece crackled. “K-17. Take the shot.” Kai didn't answer. “Control, identify the second subject.” Silence. “Control?” Nothing. Then a distorted voice finally responded. “The second subject is irrelevant.” Kai's eyes narrowed. “Then why does he have my face?” Another silence. His phone suddenly vibrated. Kai pulled it from his pocket. A message appeared on the screen. YOU WERE NEVER THE ORIGINAL. Kai stared at the words. For the first time in years, he felt something stronger than fear. Doubt. He looked back across the street. The other man was staring directly at him. How? They were too far apart to see each other clearly. Yet the stranger smiled. Then he slowly raised his hand. Not in greeting. He pointed toward Kai. Kai's phone vibrated again. Another message appeared. RUN, K-17. THEY KNOW YOU KNOW. Kai looked toward the warehouse entrance. Footsteps echoed below. Someone was coming. He reached for his earpiece. “Control, we have a problem.” A voice answered immediately. “We know.” Kai froze. “We?” The voice became cold. “You were never supposed to see him.” The footsteps grew louder. Kai looked through the window one last time. The stranger was gone. Kai grabbed his jacket and moved toward the emergency exit. His entire career had been built on following orders. Tonight, he broke the most important one. Mission aborted. He stepped into the rain. Behind him, the warehouse door opened. Kai disappeared into the darkness. He didn't know who the mysterious man was. He didn't know why someone had given him the name K-17. And he certainly didn't know what “original” meant. But one thing was becoming clear. The mission had never been about Daniel Vale. It had always been about Kai Mercer. And somewhere in the city, someone who looked exactly like him was waiting for the next move.
