Maple stirred awake, her eyes heavy with sleep. The sun had already gone down, and the cool evening breeze filtered into the room. A knock on the door pulled her out of her thoughts. “Ma’am, dinner is served,” the maid said. Maple got out of bed and stood in front of the mirror, quickly checking her face before making her way downstairs. Devon was already seated at the dining table. He gave her a cold look before returning his attention to his coffee. Maple’s heart skipped a beat. She couldn’t help stealing another glance at him before taking her seat. The maid immediately began serving dinner. The atmosphere in the dining hall was stiff. Maple ate with stiff fingers, barely paying attention to the food in front of her. Most of the time, her mind was somewhere else. Devon noticed. He raised an eyebrow, an amused look crossing his face as he watched her for a moment. Without saying anything, he stood up and headed toward his study. Maple finished her dinner shortly after and made her way back to the master bedroom. She freshened up in the bathroom before walking into the closet, hoping to find something decent to wear for the night. She planned to go home tomorrow and pick up the rest of her things. The moment she stepped inside, her eyes widened. Rows of beautiful dresses hung neatly in the closet. There were handbags, shoes, pants, nightwear—almost everything was her taste and size. Maple frowned. Wait… how did he know? She shrugged it off and picked out a simple black lace nightie before leaving the closet. She sat in front of the vanity, blow-dried her hair and slowly made her way to the bed. Within minutes, she was fast asleep. …… Back in the study, Devon sat behind his desk, going through Maple’s file. He had instructed his assistant to gather every piece of information he could find about her. But strangely, he found himself thinking less about the information in the file and more about her expression at dinner. Her hazel eyes. The soft dimples on her cheeks. Her small, full lips. And that little pout she made whenever she got lost in her thoughts. Devon leaned back in his chair. His grandparents had been on his neck for years about getting married and giving them grandchildren. When he finally agreed, they insisted it had to be her. At first, he thought he was going to regret agreeing to their arrangement. Until he saw her. …… The door creaked open as Devon stepped into the bedroom. His eyes immediately landed on the little human curled up on one side of the bed, looking almost like a ball beneath the covers. A small chuckle escaped him. He walked straight into the bathroom, freshened up and came back out wearing his robe. After turning off the lights, Devon walked over to the bed and lay down beside his new wife. For a moment, he stared at her sleeping figure. Then he closed his eyes.
