The drive to her father’s house was quiet. Maple sat by the window, her mind filled with thoughts of her mother. She tried to hold back the tears that threatened to fall.
She couldn’t cry. Not in front of the people she once considered family.
Maple closed her eyes for a moment, taking a deep breath as she tried to gather herself. When she opened them again, the sadness on her face had been replaced by determination.
She wasn’t going there to argue.
She just wanted her mother’s things.
Meanwhile, on the 30th floor of Kingston Enterprises, Devon sat behind his large mahogany desk. His eyes moved between his laptop and the stack of paperwork in front of him. The glass windows behind him offered a clear view of the city below.
His phone rang.
He picked it up.
“Speak.”
His voice was calm, but there was authority behind it.
“Boss, they’re giving the mistress a hard time.”
Devon’s hand stopped.
For a few seconds, he said nothing.
His expression changed, and the calmness in his eyes disappeared.
“Who?”
Before the person on the other end could say anything else, Devon ended the call.
He stood up.
Back at her father’s house, Maple walked into the room she had grown up in. It looked the same, but somehow, it no longer felt like hers.
She began gathering the few things that belonged to her mother.
Then she noticed something was missing.
The wooden box.
Maple searched around the room, opening drawers and checking the wardrobe, but it was nowhere to be found.
Her mother’s jewelry had been inside that box.
Anger immediately replaced the calmness she had been trying to hold onto.
She walked downstairs and found Julia and Chloe sitting together in the living room.
“Where is it?” Maple asked.
Chloe looked at her with a cold expression.
“Where is what?”
“My mother’s jewelry.”
Julia didn’t even bother pretending.
“We sold them.”
Maple stared at her.
“You did what?”
Her chest tightened as anger rushed through her.
“I said we sold them,” Julia repeated.
“You had no right!”
Before Julia could respond, the front door opened.
Mr. Jacobs walked into the house and immediately noticed the tension in the room.
“What’s going on here?”
Chloe quickly stood up and walked toward him, putting on an innocent expression.
“Dad, it’s Maple. She just came in here demanding her mother’s things.”
Mr. Jacobs looked at Maple, his expression hardening.
“Didn’t I tell you not to bother with those things?”
Maple couldn’t believe what she was hearing.
“They’re my mother’s things.”
“You’re married now. Those things shouldn’t concern you anymore.”
Maple stared at her father.
For a moment, she couldn’t find the words to respond. This was her father. The same man she had once trusted more than anyone.
Her hands curled into fists.
“I’m not leaving here without my mother’s things.”
Her father’s expression changed.
“You’re still being difficult?”
“Dad, please. Those are the only things I have left of her.”
Instead of answering, he stepped forward.
A loud slap echoed through the living room.
Maple’s face turned to the side from the force of it. She stood completely still, one hand slowly rising to her cheek.
Her eyes filled with tears.
Her father stared at her coldly.
“I told you not to ask for them.”
Behind him, Julia and Chloe exchanged satisfied looks.
Maple looked at her father again, tears now threatening to fall freely.
“I just wanted my mother’s things.”
“You’re not welcome here anymore.”
He reached for her arm and tried to pull her toward the door.
Maple resisted.
“I want my mother’s things!”
“Get out.”
“I won’t leave without them!”
“Interesting.”
The voice came from behind them.
Everyone froze.
Maple slowly turned around.
Devon stood at the entrance of the living room, his expression cold as he looked at the scene in front of him.
His gaze moved from Maple’s tearful face to the hand her father still had around her arm.
The room suddenly became very quiet.
Devon took a few steps forward.
“Did I come at a bad time?”
