Eli POV
I watched out of the window after Christa had left. I could see Monika in her red convertible texting on her phone as she waited for Christa to reach her. Once Christa got to her, she waved and smiled at Monika before she got into her car. Monika didn't bother to acknowledge her and continued texting on her phone. Watching how she ignored Christa after she had claimed to want a fresh start with her rubbed me the wrong way.
I went back to my office and continued with my work. About 5 minutes in I started to feel something was off. The security detail I had assigned to Christa had mind linked me, saying that Monika had sped out of there so fast that they had lost her, and we're trying to keep up. I told them to keep me updated and let me know when they had caught up with them. Fifteen minutes after Christa left, I felt a huge painful blow to my body. The impact was so powerful that it made me drop like a sack of potatoes. Only it wasn’t my body. It was Christa’s! I force myself up and I flew out of the packhouse and immediately turned into my wolf form in mid-air as soon as I got outside, ripping my clothes in half in mere seconds even though the pain was grabbing a hold of me, almost enough to make me pass out. Still, I pushed through it to get to Christa. I ran faster than I had ever run in my life to get to my mate. I mind linked Pete to let him know what was happening and to meet me there! I could feel her slowly slipping away from me. As soon as I got into town, my security team mind linked me telling me that Christa had been in a major car accident. I ran even harder. I made it into town within 2 minutes, which in normal circumstances would have taken me ten minutes to get to in wolf form; I reached the tree line and quickly changed back into my human form.
One of my team members met me at the tree line with some clothes, and as I changed into them, I heard Christa cry out for me in my mind. It made me pause for a split second because that should be impossible; Christa isn’t a werewolf; even her being my mate, she wouldn’t have been able to mind link me. Once I heard her call, I ran as fast as I possibly could in my human form.
As soon as I got to the scene, my heart sank into the pit of my stomach and broke into a billion little pieces. Simon howled so loudly in grief; I couldn't hear my thoughts. When I got to the car, I saw that the SUV had slammed into the passenger side of the car where Christa had been sitting. Her head was bleeding heavily, the impact had been so hard that her seatbelt had snapped off in two, she had a broken arm, her legs were crushed by the glove box, and she was trapped as the side of the car was crushed into her, wrapping around her body. She had metal sticking out of her abdomen, causing her to bleed internally. My precious beautiful mate was dying in front of my eyes.
Christa was barely awake when I got there; I leaned over her and caressed her hair. She looked at me and smiled a weak crooked smile before she blacked out.
”Christa, open your eyes! DON'T YOU DARE LEAVE ME! OPEN YOUR EYES!” I yell out! ”No, no, no, no, this can’t be happening!” I cry out.
The police and ambulance were taking too long to get there, so I used my wolf strength, even though there were hundreds of people watching, and ripped the door right off the frame. If I don’t do something now, she's going to die right here. I used my wolf senses and I could tell her neck and spine were fractured. I couldn't move her at all or I would kill her right then and there! I did the next best thing and pulled the metal out of her stomach and laid my hands on her and temporarily healed her from bleeding out and did the same with her head. Her injuries were so severe even with my healing abilities there was only so much I would do for her. At least, I can keep her alive long enough for the ambulance to get here and take her to the hospital. Moments later, Pete arrived. He ran up and started yelling out.
”Not again, please, no, not again!”
Seconds after Pete arrives, the ambulance comes speeding in with lights and sirens. As they start working on her I tell them that she has Ankylosing Spondylitis and that her neck and spine could be broken. They put a neck collar around her and very carefully roll her onto a backboard making sure not to injure her neck and spine any more than it already is.
The whole time Monika was standing on the side doing nothing to help. She only had a few cuts and bruises on her thanks to her werewolf healing. In anger, I lunged at her.
”YOU… YOU DID THIS!” She looked at me with shock in her eyes, ”THIS… this is all your fault.” I growled at her not caring about the humans being all around us at this point.
Pete rushed over to me to protect Monika.
”Alpha, how could this have been Monika’s fault? It was an accident!” He cried out, just as distraught as I was. I turned away from her, breathing heavily, fuming with anger; I ran my bloodied hands through my hair. I looked down and noticed I had Christa’s blood all over me. I turned toward Monika once again.
”Where is the driver?” She simply shakes her head.
”I… I-I don’t know? They took off after they hit us.”
”WHERE? Where did you see them take off too?” I yell, slamming my fist into the side of the already wrecked car.
”I don’t know? I didn't see!” Monika flinches from my outburst, and Pete takes her into his arms and kisses her, making sure she is ok. I envy Pete at that moment because his mate came out of it nearly untouched, and mine is barely clinging onto life. He's able to hold onto his mate and hug her at this moment. I, on the other hand, may have just lost my mate, and I have only just found her.
The ambulance is getting ready to take off with Christa, so I let them know that she is my fiance and I ride in the back with her and hold her hand on the way to the hospital. I swear to her that I will find out who did this and make it my mission to bring them down. When we get to the hospital, they immediately take her back for emergency surgery. They have me sit and wait in the emergency room waiting area. An hour later, Pete shows up.
”Any news on how she's doing?” I shake my head, no.
Pete sits down next to me, ”Man, I can’t believe this is happening again. First, my parents and now Christa!” He sighs and rubs his hands over his face, ”All this time, I kept her home locked up to keep her safe. To keep something like this from happening!” He looks down at his hands and feet, ”Now look where she’s at. Fighting for her life after a car accident, just like our parents.” He sobs, and I get up and try to comfort him. ”What am I going to do? Chase is still in a coma, and now Christa? They are the only family I have left!”
”Christa is stronger than you give her credit, for she is going to make it through this! She's not going anywhere! I know it! And Chase is a fighter, always has been, always will be. He will come out of it. He just has to find his way back to us!” He nods his head, willing himself to believe my words. To be honest, I’m not even sure I believe in my words.

Finally, after hours of surgery, the doctor comes out to update us.
”Hi Pete, you're Christa’s brother?” He asks, shaking his hand, ”I’m Dr. Wilson.”
I reach my hand out to him to introduce myself, ”And I’m Eli, Christa’s fiance.” Pete gives me a surprised look, so I mind link him.
”Cool it. She’s my mate; I have to tell him she's my fiance so I can get information from him and visit her!” He nods in understanding.
”How is she doing, Dr. Wilson?” I ask.
”Well, she sustained quite a bit of injury. She sustained multiple contusions, hematomas, multiple broken bones. And because of her Inflammatory disease, her spine has been severely fractured. Unfortunately, because of this, she's paralyzed from the waist down. Now, there are therapies that can help her regain her strength, but the possibility of her walking again are very slim. Honestly, she's lucky she's even still alive.” Pete falls back into his seat and tucks his head in between his knees. I stand there stunned, speechless. My beautiful mate is paralyzed? The doctor begins to walk off. He immediately stops and turns around.
”Oh, there is one thing that was really strange when she came in? We were told she had metal protruding from her stomach. She had internal bleeding in her gut as if something had gone through her stomach, but the area where the object would have been was healed? Do you know anything about that?”
I shake my head, pretending I have no idea what he was talking about, and he shakes his head before walking away. The nurse comes in moments later,
”You can come to visit her now; just remember she's going to be groggy from the medications, but she can hear you.” She says as she shows us to her room in ICU.
As soon as we walked through the door, my heart dropped to the pit of my stomach. My beautiful mate was lying there with wires and tubes coming out of her. Her beautiful brown caramel skin was pale, her heart-shaped face had no color to it, her usual beautiful blush was nowhere to be seen, her beautiful pink lush lips were dry and cracked, her long chocolate brown hair was tangled and all over the place. I wanted to brush her hair out of her face, but she looked so fragile I was afraid to touch her. I sat down in the seat next to her and gently took her hand in mine, and I broke down. My heart was broken seeing her like this. Not knowing if she was ever going to be able to walk again or gain feeling in her legs once more? I very gently brushed her hair out of her face, leaned in, and kissed the top of her forehead.
”I love you so much, Christa.” I whisper into her ear, ”I will find whoever did this to you, and I will kill them!”
Pete comes over to the other side of her hospital bed and takes her other hand.
”I’m so sorry I failed you, Christa. I promise if you pull through this… I won’t ever fail you again!” Pete says, kissing her cheek.
The nurse comes in to check on her IV and to give her some more pain meds. I want Christa to be transferred to the pack hospital, so she's on my territory, guarded and closer to me. I’ll be able to keep track of her condition at any time with my pack doctor and I’ll have more control over her treatment.
”Nurse…” I look at the board that has the attending nurse's name, ”Nurse Anna, I’d like to transfer my fiance to a hospital closer to me. Would you mind setting that up for me?”
She nods her head, ”Sure, let me just get the paperwork going, you can put the name of the hospital you want her transferred to, and we can go ahead and schedule her transfer.” I nod.
”Thank you.”
”Of course.” She says as she leaves the room.
”Are you sure the pack hospital is the best place for her?” He questions.
”Yes, if I didn't think so, then I wouldn't have set it up. We can give her treatments there that would never be available here. I want her to have the best shot at recovering successfully, and it can only happen at the pack hospital.” He thinks over it a moment and nods his head in agreement.
After we get the paperwork set up and get Christa transferred over to the pack hospital a day later, the real treatment for Christa begins.
