Chapter 1

Christa POV My alarm went off at 6 in the morning and normally, I would press the snooze button and groan about not being a morning person, but today is my first day of work! I was tossing and turning all night thinking about what I'll be doing at my new position and being able to meet different people. It's safe to say I am so excited to start my first job! And it couldn't be more perfect for me. I love to read, and now I get to work in a public library surrounded by books all day long. I'm also too nervous, and I am not a people person, and to be honest, I don't do well around people, but I am going to have to set that part aside and pull up my big girl panties. I roll out of bed, putting on my slippers, grab my underwear, and head to the bathroom to take a shower. Afterward, I go into my bedroom and figure out what I want to wear to my first job. I don't have many options since I don't go anywhere and choose a business casual look. I brush out my hair, grab my shoes, and head downstairs. Pete already has breakfast waiting for me. "Oh, you made my favorite bacon and pancakes! Yummy!" I said while digging into my food. I look up at Pete standing there pondering something and immediately know he's going to try to convince me not to go. "I recognize you've wanted to work and go out on your own for a while.” Oh boy, here we go, "but are you sure there isn't anything I can say or do to keep you from doing this?" I sigh while setting down my fork, "No, you can't do or say anything to talk me out of this. You don't understand how much I need this. I sit in this house all day, every day, and watch you and Chase out there, living your lives doing what you love. I just want to have the same opportunity as you and be able to do the same. I feel like I've missed out on everything in life, and it's not fair!" Pete sighs while swiping his hand over his face. "I know I haven't been fair to you, and I'm sorry. I just worry so much about what can happen and after mom and dad, I guess I can get a little carried away." Pete turns around and pours himself another cup of coffee and says, "If you need anything, just call me, and I will get there as soon as I can and be careful, please!" He looks at me with a small smile on his lips. "I will! Thank you for always looking out for me!" I get up to put my plate in the dishwasher and give him a big hug. "You ready for your first day of work?" Pete asks. "Pssh, I've been born ready!" Laughing, Pete puts away his coffee cup and grabs his jacket and keys while I grab my bag and go out the door. Once Pete drops me off I stand in front of the giant building staring in awe at it. This is the very first time I've been here, and being here now makes me even more nervous than I was before. I take a deep breath, stabilize myself, and gather some courage to walk in through the doors. As I open the doors, I can't help but gawk; the inside is just as impressive. The floors are marble and the ceiling is so tall it seems like it goes on forever. Further inside the library there are walls upon walls of books! I've never seen so many novels in my life! The books are stacked so high up you need a ladder to get to them. I step up to the desk where there is an older lady in her 60s typing away at the computer. She's so lost in what she's doing she doesn't notice me walk up and stand in front of her. I wait a few seconds before I clear my throat to draw her attention. "Oh well, hello dear, how can I help you?" "Hi, my name is Christa, and I'm here to start my first day of work. I was told that Susan would be here to train me today." "Oh yes, Christa, I've been expecting you! You can call me Susan, and I will be the one to show you what you'll be doing." She says while shaking my hand. She comes out from around the desk and leads me to a back room. It's full of carts with hundreds of brand new books that haven't been scanned in yet and alphabetized. "You will take all of the new deliveries and scan them into the computer system and then collect these stickers afterward to place them on the books in alphabetical order. Once you've done that, you'll roll the cart to where each book belongs and put them out on the shelves to be checked out. These here are old books that have been returned, and they simply just need to be returned to the shelves they came from. Questions?" "No, Ma'am, I think I've got it." Susan started showing me how everything had worked before she let me be on my own. A few hours in, I was really enjoying myself until I started to get a strange feeling. I began to get chills in my spine, my fingers started tingling, and I became extremely flush. So I took off my sweater and tried to ignore it, but as time passed, the sensation grew worse. I decided I should take a quick break and get some fresh cool air to help calm me. After a few minutes outside, I went to turn to go back, and that was the moment I ran into him. "Oh crap, I'm so sorry! I wasn't watching where I was going." He grabs me by the waist and holds me close to him and then moves his hands to my arms to stabilize me and keep me from falling. I realize I still have my palms pressed against his hard, muscular chest. I start to smooth out his shirt without realizing what I'm doing and when I do, I quickly pull my hands away. Then I hear a deep, rich chuckle coming from the person I just ran into. I slowly start to look up at him, trying not to blush, but I fail miserably. The first thing I notice is that he's really tall, compared to my 5'1 stature; he also has the most beautiful blue eyes I have ever seen and raven black hair! He has to be in his mid-20's, and holy cow is he the most handsome guy I've ever met! "Hey, careful there; I don't want you to fall." He says with a sly grin, and from what I can see, he's a little amused by this whole thing. "I-I I'm sorry, I-I should watch where I'm going!" Speaking with a stutter, unable to look away from him and blushing even harder than I was before. I feel like I could lie down somewhere and die from embarrassment right now! I notice that he's still holding onto my arms and it feels like there's electricity running between us making me feel warm all over and it feels really nice! He notices he's still holding onto me when he lets me go with a smirk, " Sorry, I just wanted to make sure you were going to be able to stand on your own." He said with a deep, smooth voice! It felt like it just melted over me! It sends a shiver down my spine. And oh my, he has the most beautiful smile; I feel my heart beating even faster; it feels like it's going to shoot out of my rib cage and take off without me! I start sweating, and oh my goddess, what is happening to me?
