Kathryn 53 When she woke from her nap, she went to the bathroom, and then poured herself a glass of water. Heather and Kyle were playing cards at the dining room table. Heather was smiling and the two were laughing. It was bittersweet. Why was everything tinged with smiles and tears, hope and despair existing at the same time? It didn’t even make sense. She filled her water glass again and got her cell phone out. She checked the signal outside, but there wasn’t one. Of course. She needed to call Tonya to find out how the farm was doing, how Janet and the cat were doing, and if the rabbits were getting enough exercise. And, she needed to mortgage the farm. She had decided the night before while everyone else slept. Kathryn gulped and fought back tears. So much for her “retirement.” S
