Chapter 1: Are fairies real or unreal?
"It's 12 already?!" Sammy exclaimed while she poured milk into her bowl of corn flakes cereal when the clock ticked at 12 in the afternoon. She looks as if she hadn't slept for a day or two. Her messy caramel brown hair, puffy eyes, and sluggish movements say it all. She has been staying up all night these past days planning and designing her miniature dream house, as her parents called it, but Sammy corrected them and said that it is a house for fairies. "I'm gonna be late! I'm gonna be late!" Sammy cried, then proceeded to run as fast as she could to the living room, leaving her cereal in the kitchen. "Late for what?" Her mother Cecilia asked, confused. "It's Saturday, Sammy dear, no classes." said John, Sammy's father wearing a gardening gloves holding a trowel and is about to go outside. "I know, I know. Mr. Everson is gonna be on BEC News today. He talks about fairy theories, and he's about to be interviewed about his views regarding fairies. Maybe they are just unseen to humans. We never know. But..." Sammy paused, then smirked. "Mr. Everson may know." she continued in a low voice, and both her parents laughed. "Still can't get over that, huh?" John said. "Never!" Sammy answered as she opened the TV and there she saw Mr. Everson, wearing a black suit that looks like a long cloak since the fabric on the back of his coat is longer than the front. His ginger red hair is tied in a purple bow, and on his left wrist, he wears a diamond-made bracelet with a logo of wings — probably the wings of a fairy. And in the middle of the wings there stood a tree that looked like a weeping willow. Sammy always wanted to have the same jewelry as Mr. Everson but afraid that it will cost a lot.
Sammy didn't get the chance to watch the beginning of the program since Mr. Everson appeared on TV, but she thought it didn't matter anyway, since she was just right on time when the hosts asked about Mr. Everson's videos regarding his theories about fairies. "So Neo, we have heard that you've become so popular with your fairy theory series on your Flicksy channel, and a lot of your viewers and supporters are intrigued by it. Now, tell us, why do you make these videos? And how did these become so fascinating?" asked Pheobe Thompson, one of the hosts. Neo — Mr. Everson's first name, sitting on a tall silver chair with his legs crossed, showed a fierce facial expression and half-smiled, appearing to be pleased by these questions. "You know, like most of my viewers, I've also been so interested in mythical creatures such as werewolves, elves, mermaids and fairies. But out of all of them, fairies got me hooked and so I read some articles and books about them. Eventually, I ended up making my own conclusions and, not to mention, theories. And this got me thinking of making videos. And so I did. I believe that these are fascinating, due to the fact that they are a mystery that cannot be easily proved to be true. And these videos that I make, somehow provide answers to the questions of the curious minds. It allows us to explore the world of these unseen creatures, or unseen to those who don't believe that they exist." Sammy was enthralled by Mr. Everson's response and the way he talked was very calm, the tone of his voice was somehow strange, especially with his last words.
"These, uh, unseen creatures, it's only a myth, isn't it?" asked Ethan Hughes, one of the hosts. He is a bald man and has thick dark eyebrows. With this question, Mr. Everson then nods. Now, silently watching from their English roll-arm sofa, Sammy was baffled by Mr. Everson's last words and now he agreed that these were only a myth. "How come you said 'unseen to those who don't believe'? What exactly does it mean?" Ethan continued. The same half-smile Mr. Everson wore before answering a question, then came back.
"I must say that to most people, it is only a myth. Since Science has never discovered these creatures and their world, people will never believe anyone who claims that they are real. And those people who claim that fairies are real, only a few of them have actually seen one. Very, very few of them." Mr. Everson has always liked to emphasize every end of his words. Everytime he speaks, it always seems like he is fully aware of everything he says and that he never doubts any of it. "Have you seen one?" asked Ethan, now attentive more than ever to everything Mr. Everson has to say. Sammy, on the other hand, was just fascinated. She has always been, ever since she got hooked on watching those videos that Mr. Everson makes every now and then. Watching him on their television was one of the things she awaited for. Hearing him talk about fairies gets her hopes up, believing that they are real and that she is not merely fantasizing about them and their existence.
"Honestly, no I haven't." answered Mr. Everson to Ethan Hughes' question. The honesty in his facial expression and tone of voice shows that it does not trouble him saying the truth. "So you are one of those people claiming they're real yet you have not seen one." Ethan replied. "As far as I know, I am only a theorist. I do not speak the truth but only the possible facts about fairies. They may be real according to those who believe and have seen these fairies. Those who believe but have never seen a fairy, some of them eventually will. And those who have never believed their whole life before even seeing one are nothing to fairies, I must say. They are just merely seeing them and that's just it." This was very confusing, not just to Ethan Hughes, the bald host, but also to Sammy. She had never heard Mr. Everson says these words in one of his videos. "I don't understand, what's more can they do? Will they turn those "believers" into their own kinds? Are they gonna give them some kind of fairy magic, or powers perhaps?" asked Ethan Hughes, intending to make it sound like a joke. Both of the hosts laughed as well as the audience from the LIVE television. "Oh not just that, did you just mention a while back that these fairies are unseen to those who don't believe them? Didn't you? And now you're telling us that even those who have never believed in it before an encounter with a fairy, are able to see one, although there's nothing more to see. Correct me if I'm wrong. I must admit, it is indeed very complicated." Pheobe Thompson interjected. These people are way too hasty! Sammy thought, slightly pissed. "Let the man answer a question, one at a time!" now raising her voice.
Even after multiple questions were thrown at Mr. Everson, he still managed to keep a calm and collected posture. He does not seem to be bothered by these questions. "In some of the books I've read, they mentioned that fairies are excellent at hiding themselves from people, camouflaging here and there. They don't easily put their trust in human beings, they think of them as predators, fairy hunters, and their enemies. So you're lucky if you get to encounter them face to face or even catch one. But that would be too challenging, that would require a great amount of effort. And if you think about it regardfully, you will realize that that would be really impossible. Considering that if it's unchallenging and if people take their existence normally, the world wouldn't have labeled them as a myth." said Mr. Everson in the most profound way he could deliver his message. "In my own conclusion, they can sense someone's intention, a human's intention, whether good or bad. But that doesn't stop them from hiding, even if you have no intention of hurting them, they still won't reveal themselves to you, unless it is unintentional or an accident. Now that sums up why some "unbelievers" encounter them in person, somewhere, somehow. But they never intend to. It just so happens." Mr. Everson continued.
"How about the uh--" Pheobe Thompson was about to say something but was interrupted when Mr. Everson started talking again. "Being a "believer" does not always indicate that they have good intentions for these creatures. Hence, only a few of them have seen one. And you have mentioned magic powers. Well yes, they do have such things. But they do not give it away to people. I have read in some books that we, humans, are sharing this world with these creatures. I wouldn't disagree with that, although I believe that they have their own magical and wondrous world they only have access to. No humans will ever be allowed to enter." Mr. Everson was so fixated on his talking that he didn't even notice he had stopped Pheobe Thompson from what she have to say. "For instance, they can grant wishes like a Genie. They can do something for you, if they can sense something special right inside you. If you're lucky enough, they will take you into their world and experience the most magical adventure you will ever encounter in your whole life. Sad to say, only a countable number of people are able to be part of this matter." Mr. Everson still wears a straight-faced expression even during his dreamlike speech. Some of the audience, even both the hosts, laughed quietly at Mr. Everson, thought that what he just said was ridiculous. As usual, Mr. Everson didn't seem to notice them laughing at him. However, Sammy was smiling widely, she couldn't even describe how happy she was with this information. This was her dream, to encounter fairies and be involved with whatever business they are in. She knew that this would make her the happiest person on earth. Well, it is certainly for her.
"Well, uhm, woah, that is marvelous, Mr. Everson." said Pheobe Thompson, pretending to be captivated. And for the second time, Mr. Everson unintentionally interrupted her when she was about to add something. "I just want to remind everyone that this is only my theory and theories are not labeled as truth, but a possibility that something is real." He said these words while looking directly at the camera, trying to make a point. "Well, you are not wrong about that, Neo." replied Pheobe Thompson calling him by his first name. "Now, before we take a break and proceed to our next guest for today's program, may I ask you another question? Will that be okay?" added Pheobe Thompson. "You just did." answered Mr. Everson sternly, but the audience laughed, including Pheobe and Ethan. "Of course I did." said Pheobe, then laughed afterwards, trying to appear funny to the audience. "There's nothing even funny about it." Sammy said to herself in a quiet voice.
"Since you have shared with us some of your theories, it appears to me that you are, uh, trying to convince people that fairies are real. Now you, personally, do you think fairies are real? What would be your claim?" asked Pheobe Thompson, now in a serious manner. The question got Sammy's whole attention. She tried to remember if Mr. Everson had said something about fairies being real, but she could not catch one. All she knew was that he made videos talking and making theories about fairies. Now that Pheobe had mentioned it, she realized that she never knew whether Mr. Everson claims fairies to be real or unreal. Although she believes that he did claim them to be real, why on earth would he bother to make videos if he didn't? she thought.
"I would like to clarify that these theories I make are merely just my theories and not my beliefs. Therefore, personally, I do not claim that fairies are real. They might be, but not certainly. Come to think of it, those people claiming they have seen fairies are only professing but always without evidence or proof. Hence, I make these theories, a somehow absurd theories. Don't you think?" said Mr. Everson, in an assertive tone of voice. I don't think so... Sammy thought. This is not the answer she was expecting. "I admit, it's indeed hard to believe something like that would happen. All I know is that they only came from someone's creative imagination, thus we can only see them from fantasy films or in paintings, which were not real at all. A man's creation, yeah, that's it." Ethan Hughes responded. "That's right, Ethan. And as for that, Neo, I almost think that you were crazy believing all those things, not gonna lie. But then, I also almost forgot that you were just making up these theories and nothing more. Well, that's on me." added Pheobe Thompson, apologetically. She was casually calling him by his first name, as if they were close friends, they had never even met before.
The television program had ended after a while. Sammy was not satisfied, she needed more explanation coming from Mr. Everson. But they ended the program too soon. This was Mr. Everson's first ever interview and she could not wait to watch him for some more. "Making up theories and nothing more? Of course it meant something to him. They should have let him talk further." Sammy exclaimed. "Now what's with you?" said her father John, who was coming inside after being out in the garden. "Nothing pops, I'm just a little upset." she replied, then lied flat on the roll-arm sofa. "Upset? What was making you upset?" asked John, now sitting beside Sammy, who was lying flat. "Pops, do you think fairies are real? Or perhaps there is a fairy world somewhere on earth?" avoiding her father's question, Sammy returned with not one but two questions to her father. "Why would you ask me that question? I wouldn't know, Sammy dear." replied John. Sammy sighed afterwards, then became silent for a while before asking a question once more. "Pops, would you think I was out of my mind if I told you that I do believe in fairies and I'm going to find one and try to discover the world where they came from?" Lying down on the sofa, staring at the ceiling, Sammy asked this question to her father John.
John looked at his daughter then smiled. "I don't think I would. If that's what you want to believe, I should just respect that. Don't you think so?" This answer coming from her father brought a smile on Sammy's face. "I think so." She got up from lying down to sit beside her father, then hugged him. "Thanks, Pops." she added.
At exactly 2 pm in the afternoon, Sammy took the fairy house she had built outside. She put it in their backyard and gave it a final touch with flower decorations. It is a small 2-storey wooden house with exactly four rooms. A living room, kitchen, bathroom and her favorite among the four, the bedroom. She thought of adding a balcony, but had a change of mind. She thought that the flowers and rocks outside would be enough to refresh the fairies whenever they wanted to. Sammy and her parents live near a farm in Yorkshire, England. She thought their place looked magical, that perhaps fairies would wander around their place. Hoping to come across one. And she was too thoughtful to build a home for them to reside in. It may sound hopeless, but Sammy never lost hope. A 14-year-old girl had never let go of her dream.
As a young girl, Sammy had always wanted to do these things. It started when she had this love for watching cartoons that showed fairies and fairy rescuers who make little houses for fairies in trouble and those in need. The fairies are also very friendly and lovable, as to what she had seen from those animated films and kids' TV shows. 'It's a very exciting and dreamy event if that could happen in real life', she thought. 'If only fairies existed!'
'If only fairies existed.' This was said by a 10-year-old Sammy. But now it has changed. She now believed that fairies are real, that they truly existed. The only problem was that she had no evidence to support her claim. She had never seen one, yet she believed. Neo Everson was known by Sammy when she was 13 years old. It was only a year ago, yet she had already felt a strange connection with him. Perhaps it's because he also loves fairies as much as she does. One of the things listed on her bucket list was to meet Mr. Everson and have a conversation with him, to talk about fairies for a day or two or perhaps forever. If only. But that was too much, she thought and laughed at this idea. Her admiration for Mr. Everson never diminished, but instead it has grown, ever since she discovered him on Flicksy — a social media platform wherein people share their videos all over the world. She still remembers the first ever video she watched from his channel. It is entitled "What are fairies? Are they classified as mammals?" and it already has half a million views. She had enjoyed watching this video, so she thought she had to watch another one until one day, she did not realize she was waiting for an update of a new video because she had already finished all the videos from Neo Everson's Flicksy channel. She had learned the anatomy of a fairy, their life cycle, the different kinds of fairies of each continent and which country they belong to. In every video, Mr. Everson shared what he had gathered from many books about fairies he had read, his favorite book of all time, and his own theory and conclusions at the end of every video. He did not have a lot of videos like any other popular Flicksy channels, since he only posts videos occasionally. But every video meant so much to Sammy.
