Chapter one- Damage control
The Moretti Real Estate office buzzed with chaos. Phones rang incessantly, their shrill tones reverberating through the high-ceilinged space. Employees darted from desk to desk like frantic bees, their hurried footsteps clicking against the polished marble floors. The tension was palpable, reflected in every whispered conversation and worried glance exchanged in passing. “Did you see it?” one voice murmured near the corner of the room. “The investors are furious,” another whispered, clutching a stack of papers like a lifeline. At the center of it all stood Sophia Carter, her presence commanding despite the turmoil. She was immaculately dressed in a tailored navy-blue suit, her sharp eyes darting across the room as she barked orders. Her tone was crisp, each word cutting through the cacophony like a whip. “Giovanni, I need that press release now!” she snapped, her gaze locking onto the trembling assistant who fumbled with his laptop. “Yes, ma’am,” Giovanni stammered, nearly dropping the keyboard in his haste. “Francesca,” Sophia continued, her voice unwavering, “where’s the investor memo? Don’t make me ask again.” Francesca jumped to her feet, clutching a folder to her chest. “It’s almost ready, Ms. Carter. Five more minutes!” “No,” Sophia said sharply, her tone leaving no room for argument. “You have two.” The energy in the room shifted as everyone around her moved with renewed urgency. Sophia wasn’t just an executive, she was the backbone of Moretti Real Estate, the one who kept the company afloat in storms like this. On her tablet, the cause of the chaos played on a loop. The screen showed Alex Moretti, the 29-year-old heir to the Moretti fortune, lounging shirtless by an infinity pool. His lean, athletic frame glistened under the sun as he held a champagne flute in one hand, his expression one of careless amusement. “Real estate runs itself,” Alex said, his smirk widening as he winked at the camera. “Who needs a boardroom when you’ve got followers?” Sophia’s jaw clenched as the clip ended, her hand tightening around the tablet. The video, now splashed across every major outlet, had gone viral overnight. Headlines screamed accusations: “Spoiled Playboy Heir Tanks Family Reputation,” “Moretti Real Estate Leadership Crisis,” and “Alex Moretti: i********: Over Industry?” Investors were furious. The company’s stock had already taken a noticeable dip, and whispers of instability threatened to derail an upcoming billion-euro merger that had been months in the making. Sophia swiped the video away with a sharp flick of her finger. Her mind raced, weighing options for damage control. A scripted apology would only do so much. If Alex refused to take responsibility again it might not be enough to stop the bleeding. The door to the boardroom flew open, slamming against the wall with a loud crack. In strode Marco Moretti, the patriarch of the company, his face a thundercloud of barely restrained fury. His expensive charcoal suit clung perfectly to his broad frame, a testament to his commanding presence. “Carter!” Marco barked, his voice booming across the office like a cannon shot. “Sir,” Sophia said, turning to face him. She remained composed, her professionalism masking the frustration simmering beneath. Marco’s imposing figure towered over her as she handed him the tablet. He watched the video in stony silence, his jaw tightening with every passing second. By the time the clip ended, his face was a portrait of restrained rage. “How far has this spread?” he asked, his voice low and deadly. “Everywhere, sir,” Sophia replied. Her tone was firm, but inwardly, she braced herself for the inevitable fallout. “Major outlets are running it on repeat. Social media is in a frenzy. Investors are panicking.” Marco’s fist slammed down on the nearest desk, sending papers scattering. The sound echoed through the room, and every employee within earshot froze, their eyes wide with fear. “That boy is a disgrace!” Marco growled, his hand curling into a fist. His voice dropped to a near whisper, though it carried even more weight. “Draft a statement. Demand a public apology. Where is Alex now?” “Ibiza,” Sophia replied flatly. Marco’s face darkened, veins bulging in his neck. “Ibiza? While we’re trying to secure a billion-euro merger?” He paused, taking a deep breath before jabbing a finger in Sophia’s direction. “Carter, I don’t care what it takes—get him back to Milan. Drag him here if you have to. Fix this!” “Understood, sir,” Sophia said, already reaching for her phone. As Marco stormed out of the room, employees scattered like leaves in a gale, parting to let him pass without so much as a glance. Sophia walked briskly to a quieter corner, her fingers flying over her phone screen as she dialed. Miles away, the chaos of the Moretti office couldn’t have felt more distant. The sun was bright and unrelenting, shimmering over the luxurious infinity pool where Alex Moretti reclined. His toned, tanned physique glistened under the Spanish sun as he sprawled lazily on a lounge chair. The pool sparkled like a jewel beside him, reflecting the endless blue of the sky. Around him, a group of influencers lounged, snapping selfies, laughing, and clinking glasses of champagne. Alex tilted his head back, enjoying the breeze, when his phone buzzed insistently on the glass table beside him. He glanced at the screen and groaned. Sophia Carter. “Who invited her to this party?” he muttered, earning a chuckle from one of his companions. With a resigned sigh, he picked up the phone. “Miss Bossy,” he drawled, his tone dripping with mockery. “To what do I owe the pleasure?” Sophia’s voice was like ice on the other end of the line. “Alex, do you even realize what you’ve done?” “Care to enlighten me?” he said lazily, taking a slow sip from his champagne flute. “You’ve humiliated the company and jeopardized our biggest deal,” she snapped, her frustration palpable. “Do you have any idea how much damage control I’ve had to do because of you?” Alex smirked, clearly unfazed. “Relax, Sophia. It’s not that serious.” Sophia’s laugh was cold and humorless. “Not that serious? Alex, investors are pulling out. The media is calling you a spoiled, incompetent playboy, and the stock is tanking. You’ve managed to turn a crisis into a full-blown disaster.” Alex yawned, stretching lazily on the chair. “You’re overreacting. A little bad press never killed anyone.” “Get back to Milan, or I’ll handle this myself and trust me, you won’t like how I do it,” Sophia snapped, her tone sharp enough to cut glass.
