Chapter Twenty Four: Confiding

805 Words
ELENA It was two weeks since Carlo’s trip and while I had thought it would only last some few days considering his light packing, I had been terribly wrong. The hardest part was mom not knowing about it was her trying to organize several meetings with Carlo or hold some party of some sort. “Are you sure Carlo would be fine with you working overnight here?” Kyle asked as he packed his bag up. I needed to finish some designs this night so that work could begin on it tomorrow. About one or two of them were needed in a week’s time. “He wouldn’t mind and I’ll be fine here.” I assured him, looking up from my computer to meet his eyes. “What are you not telling me?” Kyle asked, leaving his bag and coming to my side of the table. The penetrative look in his eyes made me feel like he could see through me and I averted my gaze instinctively. “Carlo isn’t home.” I whispered, my voice cracking slightly, a prelude to tears that I held back strongly. “Late night work?” Obviously not understanding the severity of the matter on ground. “No, he’s been gone since the fund raiser. He hasn’t called or come back since then.” I confessed and I watched as Kyle’s brows knitted tightly in thought. He moved closer to me, putting him directly in front of my table, but he didn’t lean in. “Are you saying that you have not had any form of contact with your husband since the night of the fundraiser?” I went on to tell him about how he had packed a light box and said he had a business trip. Yet, he was nowhere to be found two weeks later. “Did you guys have an argument before then?” Kyle’s tone was careful and soft, as if afraid that his words would hurt him. Although I had sworn to never say a word to anyone until I was certain about the divorce documents, I couldn’t help but tell Kyle everything. He was my closest friend and really the only person I ever got to interact with like a regular human. My mom spent too much time trying to keep herself the mother of the National princess while my sister was busy catching up half a year worth of romance from her husband. Even if she wasn’t, Anna wasn’t known for being tight-lipped and the moment she knew about it, I had to get ready for my mom to know about it also. As for Daniel, a part of him didn’t want him gloating at how right he had been, or being rash and having some men finish off Carlo. I wondered if I was developing Stockholm syndrome, since I seemed to still care deeply about him despite how everything was turning out. “Are you sure there isn’t something you have done that could have pissed him off?” “In a situation like this, it’s highly likely that he found out something that he thought was different before you guys married. Men hate to be cheated.” Kyle analysed. “Another probability is him deliberately luring you into the marriage, which I doubt, since that would be very hard to deal with.” To me, his second option seemed like the most plausible. There was nothing about me that I didn’t tell Carlo while we were dating. Even up to the part where dad had been involved in the underworld without a lot of people knowing. Also, he had informed me that he had documents that we couldn’t divorce. That only meant that he already anticipated that i would want one. “I know like one or two people over there. I’ll see if I can find out anything. We can also try to contact his assistant. I’m certain Pete is finding a way to reach him. After then, we can conclude what’s going on.” I nodded in understanding while letting out a sigh. Even though I had no hope of it getting better, I was glad I finally had someone who knew what I was going through. “Why don’t we get some light, sweet tooth dinner and we come back here to finish those designs together?” Kyle asked and I was almost certain that if it wasn’t the work we had, I would have been pulled to a bar instead. “You are not allowed to get back and not work” I warned, as I picked up my purse and put my system to sleep. “I would do it all if you would leave it even,” Kyle said as he pulled me away from my seat and out of the office.
