THE ENEMY
CHARLOTTE POV
“I wouldn’t have been able to survive these past weeks without you. On one hand is Aunty Lily constantly on my neck and on the other is Oscar, what is my offence…?.. I’m not Lucy,” I complained to Grand ma Susan.
We were both in her chambers like almost everyday, but today we chose to sit in one of her cool varanda, watching the sunset with some hot soup and bread with chilled fruit juice.
Just like my Grandmother she has been my only source of hope and happiness in the huge and beautiful mansion that seems like a cage to me. Once Oscar got married to me, he instantly became an unfeeling and unbearable man, intentionally intimidating me.
“Ignore Lily, she has always been like this, she tried very hard to separate Oscar from me as well, always wanting to be the most Favourite in my grandson life, I might be Oscar mothers’ mother and lily his father sister, yet we don’t see eye to eye,” the old woman responded with a sad smile.
“I agree with you Grandma Susan, she made sure Oscar stopped me from going to work or even leaving the house premises, all in a bid to make me feel useless,” I reported again to the old woman.
“You have me and I will do all in my power to protect and shield you, until your sister returns for her man, that’s if he will take her back. Oscar can be very stubborn but I will agree with him this time, I prefer you to Lucy,” she stroked my hair as she spoke.
I didn’t intend to smile at her talking down at my sister or telling me how much she prefer me as a wife, but the stroking of my head was so contorting and relaxing, I didn’t bother to respond, at least in my heart I know I would be out of here at the very first chance.
“You cannot really blame Oscar for listening and acting on everything Lily says, she brought him up like her own son and even though I’m convinced that Lily isn’t being truthful, there’s nothing to prove it to Oscar. He loves her so much,” she continued.
“But yet, I think I notice some things, things like Oscar returning early from work or his business travel since he married you, he’s also trying to annoy you at almost every chance,” She was beaming at me when she spoke this time.
I knew what she was insinuating but it’s not possible, her old age must be making her delusional, the same person that locked me up last night in my punishment room, all because Aunty Lily told him I was rude to her.
“Ohoo Grand ma Susan, let’s close this topic and just enjoy the cold night, Aunty Lily can try all in her power to make him hate me, I don't care as I’m not looking for his compassion or love, I just want all these to be over.”
She didn’t say anything but she kept smiling and stealing glances at me from the corner of her eye, even as we both ate in silence.
……..
…….
“I shouldn't be talking to you, I haven’t seen you in the flesh before now, but I have seen several of your pictures and your name is like a curse in the ADAMS’ mansion,” I didn’t mince words with Mr Johnson.
He was blocking my path and I needed him to let me go before Oscar saw me standing there with him. I had only left the hall to wash my hand after dinner.
“So you are the bride? Why did you marry him if you are that scared of him, did he force you? Like father like son,” the hatred emitting from Mr Johnson body and voice is worse than that of Oscar when he’s speaking with me.
I made to leave by brushing past him but what he said next stopped my feet automatically.
“Oscar is everything like his Late father, run from him now or you will lose your life, he’s still trying to keep his identity from you, don’t wait until he kill you in that golden mansion like they killed my sister,”
His words sent chills down my spine. Oscar can be ruthless and cold but a killer or aid to murder? What is Mr Johnson saying now?.
Does their enmity run so deep enough to get each other framed for murder,” various questions were running through my mind but stopped at once as Oscar's angry voice reached my ears.
“Talking to the enemy now? Or were you deaf all along on our way to this dinner party? Who was the one person I told you not to talk to?” Oscar didn’t try to hide his hatred or mocking statement.
People has begun to stare at us and whisper, yet Oscar didn’t care, he grabbed my waist and dragged me Along with him away from mr Johnson presence, from the corner of my eye, I saw the pitiful look on Mr johnson face, another cold shiver ran through my whole body, will Oscar kill me like he warned me?”
“What was he saying to you?” His question cut my thought like a sharp knife, jerking me back to reality. I shook my head aggressively before talking, my fear of him increasing dramatically after what Mr Johnson said to me a few minutes ago.
“No.. nothing at all, he was just about to talk with me when you came to…,” I was still talking but he was no longer listening, he pulled me roughly into the same car as his and gestured to the driver to start the car.
I was astounded that he wanted to be in the same car with Me, it has never happened since we got married, we use separate cars when going out to various outings or events that require my presence for his business purposes.
But I got another shock on our way back to his estate, it started with his face squeezing gradually into a very deep frown, his repetitive loud sigh, then out of the blue he spoke to me and broke the awkward silence.
“You shouldn’t talk to other men aside from me Charlotte, it’s very annoying and I might punish you next time! This is the last warning… s**t!!,! What’s happening to me?” The last sentence, which turned out to be an angry question, wasn’t for me.
But when he gestured for the driver to stop driving and pushed me into the cold night and zoomed away, my brain alerted me at once that Oscar is crazier than I thought.
Leaving me there for over two hours in the dark and scary night, until the same enemy pushed me out of his car for offered to give me a ride.
Of course I refuse at first but when he insisted and promised to drop me at the first entrance of the estate and not cause any problem for me, I accepted. It was past twelve in the midnight and getting too chilly.
Unknown to me that I had brought trouble upon myself, I mean how will I know that Aunty Lily took her time and sacrificed her sleep just to wait for my return, just so she can tell her precious nephew who brought me home.
