Chapter 1
*beep beep beep! Beep beep beep!* I groan as my alarm blared the dreaded time of day: time to get up for work. 6:30 AM. My clock flashes at me. I sigh and sit up in bed, trying to force myself awake. I take my phone off from the charger and check my messages. We wish you were here to join us, love you! A text message from my mother flashed on the Home Screen. She sent a cute photo of her and my dad at Jackson Lake, enjoying the long few days of summer in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Tears welled in my eyes wishing I were with my family out West right now. But alas, the sound of a police sirens from the streets soon brought me back to the present time. In this bustling city. Am I actually doing this right now? After washing my face, changing into work clothes, and brushing my teeth, I went out into the tiny kitchen and greeted my roommate, Jodi. She was a computer science major, and we met in college. We decided to be roommates after graduation because we both are not from the area and our friendship has really grown off of that fact. We both come from different upbringings, but we get along so well! “I can’t believe you are actually working in a real office, at a real business. We are women in the work force now. Watch out world!” She laughed as she took a sip from her coffee mug. “Oh! That reminds me, I can’t forget my glasses!” She returns from the hallway with her red glasses. They make her brown eyes and black, curly hair shine. “Ha! Well, may the odds be in your favor on this bright Monday, Miss Jodi.” She giggled as she picked up a folder and waved goodbye to me. Her keys jingled in her pocket down the hallway and slowly faded. I sighed and chewed on my lip. As much as I loved what I was doing at the office, assistant to the CEO, it irked me that I wasn’t more hands on with my Human Resources degree. I suppose we all have to start from somewhere, but what does running errands have to do with HR? Thoughts buzzed in my mind as I ate my fruity oatmeal. I in fact, haven’t even officially met the CEO, as they’ve been in and out on business trips for the past month. Imagine not being physically in your own workplace for a whole month! The bustling city noises filled my ears as I departed the apartment building. I took a deep breath. Sometimes these sights and sounds still overwhelm me. I sipped my tea and slipped an AirPod into one of my ears, trying to manifest a good day ahead. But something tells me that it may go otherwise…
