Chapter Nine.
Lila’s POV.
I couldn’t get any sleep.
Two days had passed since I stood in front of the council, and my body still ached from the events of those days, but I forced myself to get up. Lying awake all night wasn’t going to do me any good.
The Council meeting had been a disaster, and how could I forget Kate's cold, dismissive words? I wasn’t even hanging in this balance this time. I was holding on for dear life, metaphorically. I had one week to prove that I could control Kwan, or they would take action. The thought sent a shiver down my spine. Thing was. That wasn’t the only thing on my mind.
I had something to smile for, I thought, remembering the pregnancy sticks I used and hid from Raze yesterday.
As I dressed, I couldn’t shake the feeling of foreboding. I knew Raze was risking a lot by standing up for me, even as the alpha, and I couldn’t bear the thought of letting him down. I made my way to the main hall with the two pregnancy sticks in hand, where I knew Raze would be waiting for me. I found him standing, his expression was grim, and I could tell he hadn't slept much either.
“Good morning!” I said, trying to sound cheerful in spite of the knots in my stomach.
“Good morning.” He replied, his voice clipped. “We need to talk.”
I nodded, following him to a more private area. Once we were alone, he turned to face me, his eyes serious.
“Lila, we have to find a way to control Kwan. The Council is not going to give us any more chances.”
“I’ll do whatever it takes. I don’t want to be a threat to the pack. But right now, there’s something else we need to discuss.” I said happily.
“What is it?” Raze asked, frowning as I raised the two sticks to his face with a cheerful smile.
He took a deep breath before speaking.
“Lila, are you pregnant?”
The way he asked question took me by surprise, and for a moment, I didn’t know how to respond.
“I mean, I’m holding the positive results in front of you, aren’t I?” I shrugged with a small smile.
Raze’s expression didn’t soften. If anything, he looked more troubled.
“Why are you smiling? This complicates things.” He said, his voice icy.
“I thought you would be happy about this, Raze.” I said, feeling tears welling up in my eyes. “I thought we could be a family. Family is a good thing, right?”
Raze looked away, his jaw clenched.
“It’s not that simple, Lila. With everything that’s happening, a pregnancy is just another complication, and I know that I didn’t bring you here to start breeding so soon.” His words felt like a punch to the gut.
“But we can make it work.” I pleaded. “We can figure this out. It just takes a bit of discipline, and care—” He cut in, shaking his head.
“No. We need to focus on controlling Kwan first, and on you not getting killed. Everything else has to wait.”
I felt a pang of hurt at his words, but I nodded, trying to understand where he was coming from.
“Okay.” I said quietly. “I don’t understand why you wouldn’t be excited about having a baby.”
“And with you too! You’re so unstable that you’re a danger to yourself, and the people around you! Even if your life were not to be in danger, you could easily put the life of that child at risk!” His words were very harsh, but they hit home.
“I know.” I said, forcing a smile. “We’ll get through this.”
We spent the rest of the morning trying to work on exercises to help me control Kwan. It was exhausting, both physically and emotionally, but I was determined to succeed. If not for anything or anyone, for the sake of my baby on the way.
As the day wore on, I couldn’t shake the feeling of unease. Something was off, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. I tried to focus on the task at hand, but my mind kept going back to the conversation with Raze.
I wanted to believe that we could make it work, but his reaction had left me feeling uncertain. We came together on bad terms, but he’s my safest bet out of this place.
“Look, I trust that with time, you’d be able to control the entity in you.” Raze put a hand on my shoulder. He had basically spent the whole day with me.
“That’s no way to talk about your child!” I was mortified. How could he say that?
“I meant Kwan, that should have been easy to understand.” He raised an eyebrow at me, and I shook my head. I’ve been so on edge lately, and for good reason too.
Razak’s POV.
I sat in my quarters, the flickering candlelight casting eerie shadows on the walls. The meeting with my daughter, Gloria, had been long overdue. The time had come to discuss our next move.
“Father.” Gloria said, entering the room. Her voice was laced with bitterness. “What do you need from me?”
I looked up, meeting her gaze.
“We have a problem, Gloria. Raze is protecting Lila, and it’s making it difficult for us to get to her.”
“Protecting?”
“Holding her back. We are the only ones who truly know what’s good for her.” I said.
Gloria’s eyes narrowed. “And what do you expect me to do about it?”
“I need you to infiltrate Raze’s pack.” I said, my tone cold and commanding. “You need to tear them apart from within. Create distrust, sow chaos. Make it impossible for Raze to protect Lila.”
Gloria’s jaw clenched.
“Why her, Father? Why not someone else? Kwan should have chosen me as his host, not that pathetic girl. Then we wouldn’t have to go through all this trouble.”
“You know as well as I do that Kwan’s choices are not ours to question.” I replied sharply. “Lila is the key to our success. If we can control her, we can control Kwan’s energy and utilise it for our gain.”
“And if I fail?” Gloria asked, her voice trembling with anger.
“Then we will find another way.” I said, my eyes darkening. “But you will not fail, Gloria. You are my daughter, and I expect nothing but success from you.”
She nodded, her expression hardening.
“I’ll do it,” she said, her voice resolute. “But don’t expect me to enjoy it.”
“I don’t care if you enjoy it or not, Gloria.” I said, my voice cold. All I cared about was just one thing. “Just get it done.”
As Gloria left the room, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of satisfaction. The plan was in motion, and soon, Lila would be ours. And with her, Kwan.
I leaned back in my chair, a sinister smile playing on my lips. The dark wolves would finally have what they desired. All it would take was a little patience, and a lot of blood.
The time for retribution was at hand, and I was ready to claim what was rightfully ours.
