The room was burning. Not with fire, but with screams – muffled, echoing, impossible to locate. The walls trembled, shifting like smoke, and the air turned thick enough to choke on. Lexi ran, but the floor beneath her kept shifting, turning into glass that cracked under her feet. Every time she tried to move faster, shadows stretched around her ankles like vines, whispering her name – "Lexi... Lexi..." It was a voice she knew, or thought she did. Once it made her laugh, now it made her blood turn cold. A door appeared ahead, trembling as though it didn't want to exist. She reached for the handle, but her fingers passed straight through it. Everything was falling apart – the walls, the floor, the sound of her heartbeat. Then she saw her. Standing in the center of it all. Her best friend. Her smile was wrong – carved too deep, too still. Her eyes held a light Lexi didn't recognize. "You always trusted too easily." The girl whispered. The world cracked. A metallic scent filled the air – sharp, heavy, unforgettable. Pain blossomed somewhere deep inside her, but her voice wouldn't come. Her throat was locked, breathe torn away. She fell to her knees, clutching at nothing. The other's girl laughter rippled through the smoke – once a sound of comfort, now the cruelest sound in the world. Then, silence. Complete, suffocating silence. Lexi opened her mouth, but no sound escaped. Her vision blurred. The room dissolved into light – white, endless, merciless. She gasped awake. The ceiling above her was still. Her sheets clung to her skin, damp with sweat. Her chest rose and fell in uneven waves as her mind clawed its way back to reality. For a moment, she didn't move. Didn't breathe. The only sound was the hum of the city outside her window. Through the glass, lights shimmered in the distance – buildings glowing like quiet constellations. Beautiful. Distant. Indifferent. She pressed a hand against her chest, feeling the rhythm of her heartbeat begin to slow. It's over, she told herself, though her trembling fingers said otherwise. Slowly, she pushed the blanket aside and stood. Her legs felt fragile, unsteady, as she crossed the room and stepped into the bathroom. Cold light filled the mirror. The reflection staring back at her was pale, eyes glassy, hair tangled in the shape of a nightmare. She turned on the tap and let the water run, cold and clear, over her hands. It stung at first, and then steadied her. The city outside whispered with distant traffic and possibility. Los Angeles City. A new place. A new start. That was the promise. But as Lexi lifted her gaze to the mirror, she wasn't sure if the past had learned how to stay gone. Still, she wanted to forget. To breathe again. To start over – even if she didn't know how yet.
