Julien eyed the single letter left on the salver with distaste. He’d opened and read everything else that came in the post, and could put it off no longer. Finally, he broke the seal and began to read Gabriel’s carefully ornate handwriting. He had to wade through nearly two pages of flowery phrases and poor spelling before he found the object of the letter, which was Gabriel’s news that he had found someone new and would be vacating the house on Windmill Street within a few days.
With enormous relief, Julien folded the letter back up and tossed it aside. That saved him the trouble of asking Gabriel to vacate the house—something he’d been intending to do that day or the next.
