"Mom, what are you doing here?" Emma looked surprised.
It was Una Baron Joseph, Emma's mother, who was glaring angrily at Emma and Vincent. Her husband, Clement's third son, Franklin, was tugging at her clothes, gesturing for her to keep quiet.
With a fake smile, Franklin apologized to Clement and the guests, "I apologize for the disturbance regarding our family matters, folks. Please, continue to enjoy yourselves and pay us no mind."
Afterwards, Franklin pulled Emma and Vincent aside to a corner.
Emma asked, "Dad, why are you here?"
Looking at Una and the Joseph family in the distance, Franklin whispered, "Your mom insisted on coming, saying she wanted to mend things with Grandpa and try to return to the family."
Vincent scoffed inwardly. The Joseph family, so cruel, wouldn't reconcile with the Barton family over such a small gesture.
Seeing her father in distress, Emma stepped forward to comfort him. However, Una persisted, storming over and berating them.
"You think hiding will help? Franklin, you're just like Vincent, a coward who hides whenever there's trouble," Una ranted, then turned to Vincent with a cold gaze. "Vincent, where have you been for the past five years?"
Emma tried to explain, "He joined the military!"
"The military?" Una frowned. "What nonsense. Just look at you, you don't have the bearing of a soldier at all. And even if you were, you couldn't have risen to officer rank. How dare you boast about it?"
Norman chuckled, "I bet this Vincent looks more like a boy scout."
"Hahaha!" The room erupted in laughter at Norman's words. Faced with everyone's mockery, Una's face turned sour.
She had hoped Vincent's sudden return meant he'd become successful. But now, it seemed he hadn't progressed at all.
Facing the ridicule, Vincent remained expressionless. "What's an officer? I don't even care about the president! Let me tell you, even Five-Star General Galahad treats me with respect."
The room fell silent in an instant. Everyone stared at Vincent in shock.
Then they burst into laughter.
"What does he know about being a five-star general?"
"I think Vincent must be crazy, not in his right mind."
No one in the room believed Vincent's words.
They all saw Vincent as a lunatic, a fool, a clown.
Unable to bear it any longer, Una gritted her teeth. "Vincent, enough! Do you want to embarrass yourself even further?"
Just then, a man and a woman walked in.
"It's Nathan Marion!" Una's brother, Kim Baron, called out.
Nathan was the heir of the Marion family, a prominent finance dynasty in M City. Recently, he got engaged to Miranda, the daughter of Kim Baron. The Barton family invited Nathan to Clement's birthday in an attempt to curry favor with the Joseph family.
The Marion family held significant influence in M City. As soon as Nathan arrived, all the Barons raised their glasses in salute. Spotting Nathan, Clement's demeanor shifted noticeably, his earlier indifference towards Vincent replaced by a wide smile.
Approaching with a cane, Clement greeted, "Mr. Marion, it's truly an honor to have you at my birthday celebration."
Nathan politely shook hands with Clement, though he couldn't deny he wouldn't have bothered to attend if not for Miranda's insistence.
Having overheard the earlier discussion, Nathan's curiosity was piqued. "I couldn't help but overhear someone boasting about not caring about the president and earning the respect of Five-Star General Galahad. Who might this remarkable individual be?"
Pointing at Vincent, Miranda said, "Darling, it's that shameless lowlife over there. Unfortunately, he's my cousin's husband. He's truly an embarrassment to the family."
Emma felt embarrassed at Miranda's words, but Vincent remained composed, seemingly unaffected.
Nathan burst into laughter, then waved for a few waiters to bring in a large box. "Mr. Joseph, I've prepared some gifts. I hope you'll like them."
With that, Nathan ordered the waiters to open the box, revealing a golden replica of a deer statue.
"This is..."
Clement's eyes widened in surprise.
Miranda, beside him, smirked. "Grandpa, this statue was custom-made by Nathan specifically for you, at a cost of one million."
The crowd erupted in awe.
A million dollars! Such extravagance led many female guests to envy Miranda for having such an impeccable fiancé.
Clement beamed. "Mr. Marion, you're truly thoughtful."
Nathan shrugged. "It's nothing. As long as you like it."
Then, turning to Vincent, Nathan asked, "Since you're so capable, what gift did you bring for the Joseph family? Why don't you show everyone?"
In Nathan's eyes, Vincent was arrogant without any real strength. Such a person would only bring shame to his fiancée's family. He was eager to see Vincent humiliated.
However, Vincent's response surprised him.
"You've reminded me," Vincent said with a cryptic smile, "to express my gratitude to the Joseph family and Mr. Joseph for their care of my wife over the years." Vincent's words intrigued everyone. "I indeed have prepared a gift!"
After that, several men in black suits struggled to bring in a large wooden box.
With a nod, Vincent gestured for them to open it, and everyone leaned in, curious to see what was inside.
As the wooden boards were removed, a gleam of gold emerged, which elicited gasps from the crowd.
It was a golden coffin.
