Chapter 1
"King will not see anyone today. Mr. Field, please leave."
"Mr. Galahad, is it really King who's here? Could you introduce me to him, please?" Stanley Field, the wealthiest man in M City, asked humbly.
"Didn't I make myself clear? King has important matters to attend to today, and he won't see anyone!" proclaimed Galahad, the imposing military figure, his countenance firm and unwavering.
At M City’s airport, a private plane hovered and landed. It was surrounded by dozens of fighter jets escorting it. The entire airport was on edge, with armed soldiers standing guard at every corner.
Various large screens at the airport were broadcasting breaking news:
"This just in: King, the silent partner of International Peace Corporation, who was originally scheduled to visit the presidential palace today at the invitation of the president, diverted to M City for unknown reasons. This unexpected turn of events has ignited speculation among many."
The news of Mr. King's arrival had already spread throughout M City, and the whole world knew him as the biggest shareholder behind the multinational giant corporation, International Peace Corporation.
However, he had another hidden identity; he controlled the world's largest clandestine organization, the Round Table. The International Peace Corporation was just the tip of the iceberg of this organization's assets. His real power was unimaginable, and even presidents of various countries had to heed his words.
For someone like Stanley Field, a local tycoon in M City, to want to see him was nothing short of a fairy tale.
His name was Vincent Chesterton, the leader of the Round Table, known by the code name "King."
Vincent's return this time was to see one person, his wife, the heiress of the Joseph family, Emma Joseph.
He had declined the president's lunch invitation because of a text message from his wife.
"Vincent, help me!"
After leaving the airport, Vincent sat in his exclusive car and reflected on the past memory.
Five years ago, he was just a mid-level member of the Round Table. Betrayed during a mission, he was injured and fled to M City. He was saved by Emma there, the heiress of the local prominent family, the Joseph family.
During his recovery, they fell in love, and despite opposition from her family, Emma married Vincent. However, shortly after their marriage, assassins tracked him down in M City. To keep his past from endangering his wife, he eliminated the assassins and left without a word.
In these five years, he had climbed steadily to the pinnacle of the Round Table. He never forgot his wife and had been waiting for an opportunity to confess everything to her. But a distress call from his wife's message left him with no more hesitation.
Soon, the special car arrived at the entrance of the Joseph family’s mansion. After stepping out of the car, Vincent walked towards the mansion. Suddenly, his gaze was drawn to a petite silhouette in the distance.
A raggedly dressed little girl was rummaging through the trash can at the door. Soon, she found a discarded piece of cake covered in dirt and worms. However, the girl, seemingly famished, didn't seem to care. She picked up the cake and stuffed it into her mouth.
Vincent hurried forward and swatted the cake out of the little girl's hand. It was too dirty; she would get sick if she ate it.
The hungry-looking little girl, aged about four or five, was visibly malnourished, with tattered clothes. She wasn't wearing any shoes, and her face was smudged with dirt. This contrasts starkly with her pair of amber-colored eyes.
"Sir, can you give me back my cake? I haven't eaten anything for days. Could you please give me some food? I'm so hungry!" The little girl looked up at Vincent with pleading eyes.
Vincent quickly reached into his pocket and pulled out a cookie, handing it to her. The little girl eagerly grasped the biscuit and devoured it hungrily.
"You little brat, how dare you beg outside the Joseph family! Get out of here!" At that moment, a fierce-looking middle-aged maid emerged. She wielded a stick and kept striking the girl repeatedly.
The girl dodged and cried, "Please... don't hit me... I'm really hungry... it hurts..."
Seeing this, Vincent's calm face broke, a quick flash of anger crossing it like lightning in a clear sky.
‘How could someone be so cruel?’
Even someone of Vincent's stature couldn't tolerate the maid's actions.
"Stop!" Vincent walked over and grabbed the maid's stick.
The woman looked at Vincent disdainfully. "Who are you? I'm with the Joseph family."
"What did this little girl do to deserve such treatment from you?" Vincent's anger was building as he looked at the battered girl.
The maid looked at Vincent arrogantly. "None of your business. She's just an outcast of the Joseph family, and her presence tarnishes the Joseph family’s name. I can beat her to death, and it wouldn't matter. If you get in my way, I'll beat you too!"
Vincent paused, then blurted out, "Bastard of the Joseph family? What do you mean by that?"
The maid sneered. "Five years ago, Miss Emma Joseph married a homeless man. But soon after, that shameless ran away, leaving behind only a bastard child. She has become the laughingstock of the whole City!"
Hearing this, Vincent felt like he'd been struck by a bullet.
‘Five years ago? Homeless man? Emma? So, this little girl is my daughter!’
At this moment, Vincent was overwhelmed with anger. Seeing his daughter in such a state, even though he was the most powerful man in the world, he couldn't remain calm.
Vincent couldn't fathom what kind of life Emma and their daughter had lived for the past five years. Even a servant of the Joseph family dared to brutally assault his daughter!
"You dare to treat my daughter like this, unforgivable!" Vincent picked up his daughter, and his black-clad attendant swiftly moved forward to restrain the maid.
"Your daughter? You're the homeless man who ran away five years ago?" The middle-aged maid looked at Vincent, and her face was filled with disbelief.
Vincent didn't respond to her. Instead, he carried his daughter away.
The little girl looked at Vincent cautiously and said, "Sir, I want to find my mommy..."
‘Sir?’
Vincent was momentarily stunned, then he realized, ‘Yes, my daughter has never seen me as her dad.’
Vincent looked at his emaciated daughter. His heart ached. Then he asked, "What's your name?"
The little girl looked at Vincent and said, "My name is Hope Chesterton."
Vincent suppressed the pain in his heart and asked, "Where's your mommy? Where did she go?"
Hope widened her eyes and said, "Mommy said we had no money, so she went out to earn money. She said when she earned money, I won't be hungry anymore. But I’m still hungry every day, and everyone bullies me, hits me every day, and doesn't give me food..."
Hearing this, Vincent's eyes moistened. His wife and daughter had suffered so much, and he had no idea. He felt like a complete jerk!
Vincent had walked on the edge of danger countless times over the years, enduring numerous serious injuries, but he had never shed a tear. Yet today, facing his own daughter, he cried.
Vincent continued to ask, "What about your dad?"
Hope lowered her head, looking sad, and said, "I've never seen my dad since I was born. Everyone says I'm a fatherless child.
I asked Mommy where Daddy is, but Mommy always cries and refuses to answer me. I know Mommy is sad, so I dare not ask her again."
Vincent spoke up, "Come with me. I'll take you to find Mommy, okay?"
"No!" Hope shook her head. "Mommy said I can't go with strangers."
"I'm not a stranger. I'm your dad... your dad's friend..."
Vincent couldn't bring himself to say it.
‘I'm not worthy of telling my daughter my true identity as her father right now!’
"Sir, can you really take me to find Mommy? I haven't seen her for three days." With tears welling up in her eyes, Hope pleaded.
At this moment, the middle-aged maid, who had been restrained by Vincent's attendants, suddenly spoke up, "Haha! Let me tell you, Emma is now at a strip club with men. She doesn't have time to take care of her daughter..."
