Chapter 1
My comfortable sleep was rudely interrupted by the sound of my alarm. I gave myself a good ol'-fashioned punch and stood up, groggily stretching my limbs.
With a kind grin, I kissed my locket and whispered, "Good morning, Liam." It's the only thing I have left to remind me of my genuine love.
I slipped on my slippers and shuffled off to the bathroom for my morning hygiene ritual.
So, let's get the introduction out of the way first. Xena Michaelson, although everyone calls me Xen. As a normal teen with a bright brain, I turned seventeen this year.
My background is as a software engineer, but I originally originate from a little town in Texas.
As a prodigy, I only needed one try to pass the entrance exam for New York's most prestigious university, Wellington Institute of Technology. Since I live independently, I had no trouble relocating.
With only a few changes of clothes, my laptop, and a stack of books, I was easily able to make the move to New York. My studio apartment consists of just my bedroom and an adjacent bathroom. To the left is a little sitting area, and the kitchen is open.
The swing chair on the balcony, where I often have conversations with my plants and use my laptop, is another favorite area of mine.
I am, in fact, a werewolf; that's my deepest, darkest secret. Specifically, the offspring of the Alpha of the Silver Moon Pack, one of the most powerful in Blazelet Mountain before it was conquered some seventeen years ago by the cruelest maniacs on the planet, the Shadowed Banes.
My mother brought me into this world on the day our pack was assaulted. Unfortunately, the monsters of Shadowed Banes made my birthday a bad omen. My entire pack was eaten by their cruel Alpha Xander; my parents were not spared.
The day I entered the world, I lost both my parents. There's no way my luck could be much worse than that.
Liam Colt, a young man, came to my rescue. He took me in, and his folks nurtured me and took good care of me.
My backstory was revealed to me by Liam when I was mature enough to comprehend the brutality of the world. It was then that I learned Liam would eventually become the Alpha King of the Vengeful Hunters.
Liam was my childhood sweetheart, my greatest friend, and my entire universe. His folks treated me like a daughter and showered me with affection.
As soon as Liam reached sixteen, animosity between me and his parents took root. Ela, the pack's Luna, has recently grown disapproving of our friendship. She cautioned me several times to avoid Liam.
However, her worries were warranted, as Liam's existence will soon be completed by his mate, rendering me a mere accessory.
The Alpha Blake Colt started looking at me like I had two left eyes. Many times he lectured me about how my presence was harming Liam's life. Liam, he said, would one day be the Alpha king and would have to take on enormous duties.
However, he used to fritter away his "valuable" time with someone like me. Who had nothing to look forward to, no goals to pursue, and no will to live.
When I finally had enough of living there, I ran away to Texas. The direction my life was heading was unknown to me, but there was no turning back now. In the beginning, the road was rocky. I used to sleep on the parks' metal benches, and my sole food would be water and any fruit I could steal from the gardens. After realizing she had gone too far with her punishments, Moon Goddess set me up with a man named Billy, who was looking for a cashier at his department store.
As soon as he made the offer, I jumped at the chance to start making money on my own. Despite the fact that Liam's parents abandoned me at a critical juncture in my life, I am eternally grateful to them. They made sure that I had a good education, which turned out to be a huge help.
At Billy's shop, I found a vintage PC that quickly became my closest companion. With my first paycheck, I invested in self-study, purchasing a computer and a cell phone. Using that, I watched tutorials on how to use Microsoft Office, how to write code, and even how to use programming languages like Python and Java.
I had to work two jobs and go to school full time to pay the bills and keep my scholarship. Because of my high IQ, I was able to finish high school early. It's odd, but I guess that's what sets me apart.
After that, I looked into top engineering schools and promptly applied to Wellington Institute. Since Wellington Institute is notorious for administering the most difficult exams, my success on the entrance exam was met with widespread surprise.
For the past two years, New York has been my home. Nobody knows my secret, and I have no intention of telling them. When I was first trying to locate a mate for my wolf, Maria would criticize me and even fight with me. Because I had no intention of seeking vengeance on those responsible for ruining my life, she was dismayed.
You learn the most from life itself. My life's hardships had hardened me to the point of apathy. To what end, exactly, will my vengeance serve?
Is it possible for me to face the Shadowed Bane's Alpha King on my own? Actually, no. I am little more than a footnote in the annals of time. My entire lineage was obliterated the day I was born, so I doubt anyone even knows my name. And Alpha Blake withheld my identification from the vicious Alpha because he feared for his life.
Being a werewolf is the worst thing that has happened to me.
Whereas living a regular human's life brought me respect, love, and happiness, this one has only brought me agony, depression, and anguish. The next step on my path to becoming the greatest hacker ever is to launch my own information technology company. I won't be returning there anytime soon.
What am I supposed to do now? I was abandoned by my family, my pack, and my friends. I hope Liam has finally found someone to share his life with. It's only that my heart refuses to let go of him.
I pulled on some blue pants and a white T-shirt and ran to get my keys. Not to an automobile, but to my home. My salary as a technology expert at Havoc Corporation is sufficient to cover my educational expenses, but not more. To make ends meet, I provide for myself by working as a content writer for several technology firms. I had even broken into their networks to learn about cutting-edge tools and techniques I could put to use.
As soon as I landed in New York, I sent in a job application to Havoc Corporation. I was in need of a stable income, and this position offered respectability and the potential for advancement.
At first, they were hesitant to recruit me, but now that they've seen my profile, they can't say no. I'm not trying to puff myself up, but that's how much I appreciate myself.
I had to work nights because I had classes in the morning. That didn't bother me in the least. No one would risk harming a werewolf.
When Ava first saw me, she was taken aback since I looked like a young, impressionable girl, and my willingness to work overnight hours gave her good reason to be concerned. If only she knew I was incredibly tough and not at all vulnerable.
Maria and I had a complete communication blackout. Though she despises me for shirking my duties, she is always there to cheer me up when I'm feeling blue. Our unbreakable tie is a direct result of our inseparability. I avoid making new friends because I am too nervous to risk becoming close to anyone. I can't afford another heartbreak right now.
Liam was a good friend of mine, yet he never once tried to track me down after I moved away. A small part of me still hoped that he might return, but that optimism has long since withered away.
He, too, had a life, a lot of responsibility, and certain vows to keep, so I can't say that I blame him. Still, I carried his locket as a memento to recall the wonderful and joyful times in my life.
The process of moving on was difficult but essential. I was an independent person. Having been gifted with a quick wit since birth, I won't waste time crying over the impending arrival of my loving son. I must realize my potential and grow into an individual worthy of global acclaim.
The metro station, which was around seven miles from my residence, was within walking distance in less than a minute. Don't judge me; if you had supersede, why would you hire a cab? Even if I could get to college in this manner, my passion for train travel prevented me from doing so.
When my phone rang, I had just bought a ticket and was ready to enter the metro. I looked at the alert to make sure. Ava sent it.
Get to the workplace by 7 o'clock tonight. We had planned a celebration to welcome the CEO to Havoc Corporation on the occasion of his visit today.
A look of shock crossed my face. It's been two years since I started working at Havoc Corporation, and I still haven't bothered to find out who the CEO is. People looked at me funny because I was laughing at my own foolishness.
The phone buzzed once more. I looked at the alert to make sure. Ava forwarded me the day's agenda. I was only scanning it when my eyes paused on his name.
"Alexander Havoc"
It came so easily to my lips that I was surprised at myself for using it. The very mention of his name conveyed power and authority. The thought of seeing this individual in person has me curious.
I sighed and stuffed my phone back into my pocket before boarding the tube.
It's safe to say that this was a monumental occasion.
When Xen finally arrived at school, she made a beeline for her locker. She opened it and began rearranging her books, completely oblivious to the hawklike eyes following her every move.
That would be Caleb Spade himself.
Although Xen's reserved and icy demeanor put her on the outside with most people, she still had her share of detractors. Her peers resented her because they were envious of her academic success, and her icy demeanor didn't help matters.
At first, Xen ignored everyone who sought to befriend her. Not that she wasn't intrigued, but she did realize they were motivated by the prospect of rewards. They're all so downtrodden and pissed off that they've banded together to establish a secretive club and plan against her.
Caleb Spade, the captain of the football squad, served as the club's president. Caleb felt an intense attraction to Xen. Her modest sense of fashion didn't matter because he was captivated by her model body, stunning blue eyes, and fierce demeanor. Caleb made repeated attempts to hit on her, but Xen, being Xen, simply ignored him. When his efforts to soothe her were fruitless, he became increasingly vindictive in his pursuit of her. Caleb has a dual need to be the center of attention and exact revenge on her for being rude to him.
