Chapter Three: The Shadow Forest Escape

1229 Words
The moment the footsteps reached the top of the stairs, everything inside me tightened. Not fear alone. Something deeper. Something instinctive. Kael shifted in front of me, fully blocking my body from view. It wasn’t dramatic. It was precise. Controlled. Like he had done this too many times before. The floorboards creaked again. Closer. A man’s shadow appeared at the edge of the doorway. He stepped in slowly. Not rushing. Not panicking. Confidence. That confidence scared me more than the screams outside. His eyes landed on Kael first. Then moved to me. And stayed there. “So,” the man said calmly, “you are the reason this entire village is collapsing.” My throat went dry. I instinctively stepped back—but Kael’s presence stopped me from moving too far. Kael didn’t speak immediately. But something about his posture changed. Slightly lower tension. More focused. Dangerous in a controlled way. “She is not involved in your protocol,” Kael said finally. The man smiled faintly. “That’s not your decision anymore.” Another set of footsteps appeared behind him. More Ascendant hunters. At least three. My chest tightened painfully. Too many. Kael exhaled slowly. Not fear. Calculation. Then— He spoke quietly, almost to himself. “Stay behind me,” he said. I swallowed hard. “I am behind you.” “That’s not what I mean.” His tone shifted slightly. Stricter. He meant distance. Not position. Before I could respond, the lead hunter raised his hand. “Kael Draven,” he said, “by Ascendant protocol, you are ordered to surrender the marked subject.” Kael didn’t move. The air in the room changed again. I felt it. Pressure. Like something invisible was tightening. Kael’s jaw clenched slightly. “She is not a subject,” he said. The hunter tilted his head. “Her resonance signature disagrees.” My chest tightened. That word again. Resonance. It wasn’t just theory. It was something they could measure. Something real. Something that linked me to him. The hunter stepped forward one pace. Kael moved instantly in response. Faster than I could process. He intercepted the movement so cleanly it looked like space itself bent. The hunter barely reacted before Kael grabbed his arm and twisted. A sharp c***k echoed through the room. The man stumbled back with a hiss. The others immediately shifted. Weapons raised. My breath caught violently. “Kael!” I shouted. He didn’t look at me. “Do not interfere,” he said sharply. “I’m not interfering, I’m—” “Stay behind me.” His voice dropped lower. Strained. Not anger. Control. Barely holding. The hunters moved again. This time faster. The room exploded into motion. Kael didn’t wait. He attacked first. Not wildly. Not recklessly. Controlled precision. One hunter charged him— Kael stepped aside, redirected the movement, and slammed him into the wall with brutal efficiency. The impact cracked the plaster. My heart jumped into my throat. This wasn’t normal fighting. This was something, trained. Something dangerous. Another hunter lunged toward me. I froze. But Kael was already there. Too fast. He grabbed the attacker mid-motion and threw him across the hallway like he weighed nothing. The sound of impact was sickening. I stumbled back. “This is insane…” I whispered. Kael finally glanced at me. Just for a fraction of a second. “Elira,” he said sharply, “don’t watch.” “What do you mean don’t watch?! You’re—” Another attack interrupted me. The remaining hunters regrouped quickly. These weren’t normal soldiers. They moved like coordinated systems. One of them pulled out something metallic. It wasn’t a weapon in the traditional sense. It pulsed faintly. Kael’s eyes changed instantly when he saw it. “Resonance disruptor,” he muttered. “What?” But he didn’t answer. Because the device activated. A low vibration spread through the room. My chest tightened violently. Suddenly, breathing felt harder. My knees weakened slightly. Kael reacted instantly. But slower this time. For the first time. A c***k. One hunter rushed him immediately. And Kael hesitated. Just half a second. That was enough. The strike landed. Kael stumbled slightly backward. My eyes widened. No… Kael caught himself instantly—but the damage was done. The hunters smiled. “It’s affecting him,” one said. Kael’s breathing changed. Faster now. Controlled—but unstable. “Elira,” he said without looking at me, “move toward the back exit.” “I’m not leaving you!” “You don’t understand—” Another pulse from the disruptor hit the air. My vision blurred slightly. Kael gritted his teeth. His control was slipping. Not emotionally. Physically. Something inside him was reacting violently. “Elira,” he repeated, voice lower now, “if I shift fully in here, you will not survive it.” I froze. “What?” But he didn’t elaborate. Because the hunters attacked again. Kael moved to intercept— But this time, he was slower. Not weak. Not human slow. But restrained slowly. Like something inside him was being forcibly held down. The hunter struck him again. Kael hit the ground for the first time. My stomach dropped. “Kael!” Something inside me snapped at the sight. I moved forward instinctively— But he shouted without looking: “DON’T!” The force in his voice stopped me. The hunters noticed me moving. One of them smiled. “She reacts to him already,” he said. Kael pushed himself up slowly. His breathing was heavier now.His eyes, darker. Something inside him was breaking. “Elira…” he said quietly. This time his voice was different. Not, command. Not, warning. Something closer to restraint losing ground. “You need to leave.” I shook my head. “Not without you.” A pause. Then— Something changed in him. His gaze flickered toward me fully. And for the first time— I saw it. Not just control. Not just strength. But conflict. Because whatever was happening inside him… I was part of it. The disruptor pulsed again. Kael clenched his jaw violently. And then— It happened. His eyes flickered fully. Not human for a split second. Something deeper. Stronger. Unstable. The air dropped. Even the hunters stepped back slightly. “He’s shifting,” one whispered. Kael’s voice came out low. Dangerously low. “Run,” he said again. But I didn’t. Because I couldn’t. Not after seeing him like that. The man who had been controlling everything… was losing control because of me. “No,” I whispered. Kael’s head snapped toward me.Something broke inside his restraint. “Elira,” he said—voice sharper now—“I cannot protect you and hold this back at the same time.”The disruptor pulsed again. Kael staggered slightly. And then— His voice dropped into something almost unrecognizable. “If I lose control… I won’t stop at anyone.” Silence. Heavy. Final. That was the moment everything changed. Because I realized— This wasn’t just survival anymore. It was a choice. Me. Or control. The hunters moved in again, sensing collapse. Kael’s hand trembled slightly. And I saw it clearly now. He wasn’t just fighting them. He was fighting himself. “Elira,” he said one last time. This time softer. Almost… human. “Trust me.” And then— He released control.
