Dante. Kai. Finn. Feared. Powerful. Forbidden. And somehow… all drawn to me as their mate. Then everything begins to change. Wounds start healing beneath my touch. The wild bows to my presence. And whispers of an ancient legend begin to follow me.I am not the weak, cursed girl they tried to erase. Now the mate who rejected me wants me back… not for love, but as a weapon. An enemy lurks in the shadows, hunting my kind. The Night Of Broken Promises
EMBER The blood moon doesn't lie. It hung over Dreadfang Peak like a wound in the sky. Red, swollen, watching. I stood before my mirror in the white silk dress every unmated female wore to the Mate Ceremony, and I told myself this was the night everything changed. All those years of whispers and pity looks and careful smiles would end when Marcus sealed our bond and the Blackthorne name meant something again. Stupid, hopeful girl. "You look beautiful, little moon." Aunt Sarah appeared in the doorway holding moon flowers. The kind she kept in a jar on the kitchen windowsill, the kind she said my mother used to love. She pressed them into my hands without explaining why, and her eyes were too bright, her smile too careful, her hug a beat too long. "I just wish they could be here," I said, touching my mother's necklace at my throat. "They would be so proud." Her voice cracked. She pulled back and cupped my face in her hands, studying me the way she sometimes did when she thought I wasn't paying attention like she was memorising something she was afraid of losing. "Remember… no matter what happens tonight, you are loved." No matter what happens. I should have heard the warning buried in those words. I filed it under my nerves and let it go. Marcus arrived in his ceremonial black suit, all sculpted jaw and ice-blue eyes, looking exactly like the future Alpha he was born to be. He offered his arm. I took it. His hand was cold. The Grand Hall blazed with hundreds of floating candles, blood-red moonlight pouring through the glass ceiling, a hundred noble families arranged in their finest to watch their children transform. The air tasted of anticipation and old power and the particular cruelty of rooms where status is everything. At midnight, Elder Vacre raised his staff and called upon the ancient spirits, and one by one my peers stepped into the light and became. Celeste was first among our circle. A silver wolf, luminous and perfect, exactly what everyone expected her to be. She caught my eye across the room and gave me the smile she had been giving me since we were eight years old. Warm. Conspiratorial. Ours. I smiled back, because I didn't know yet that she had already decided what tonight would cost me. Then it was my turn. I stepped into the circle's centre. Raised my arms to the blood moon. Waited for the light to unlock whatever lived inside me. Pain detonated through every nerve instead. I hit the floor screaming. My bones felt like they were breaking and rebuilding at once, but nothing emerged. No wolf. No shift. Just me human, shaking, wrong on my hands and knees while the Grand Hall went terrifyingly, completely quiet. Then the whispers started. "Wolfless." "Cursed." "An abomination." I looked up at Marcus through tears. My hand reached for him. He stepped back. That single, deliberate step. It said everything his words had not yet, that he had already done the calculation, already accepted the answer, and I was on the wrong side of it. The boy who had held my hand at my parents' memorial. The boy who had promised, in our beautiful garden when we were fifteen, that he would always choose me. He stepped back and the promise went with him. "Marcus, please…" "You're wolfless." Flat. Businesslike. "A wolfless mate would destroy my family's reputation. My future as Alpha." "We have been together for years." I forced myself to stand. My legs shook but I refused to stay on the floor. "You said you loved me." "I loved who I thought you were." Loud enough for the entire hall. Deliberate. "I, Marcus Blackclaw, reject you, Ember Blackthorne, as my mate and betrothed." The words hit like a physical blow. A public rejection in our world was not just heartbreak. It was an execution by humiliation. I felt something inside me c***k. Not break, c***k like a dam holding back a flood deciding to let go. I wanted to collapse. I straightened instead, because I was a Blackthorne and we did not collapse in public, even when everything was ending. "You promised," I said. "Promises to a wolfless freak mean nothing." That was not Marcus. I turned. Celeste stood beside her brother in a silk robe, back in human form, her voice carrying easily across the silent hall. Steady. Rehearsed. She had prepared for this moment and chosen it. She leaned close, low enough for only me. "Those purple eyes when you collapsed? I know what that means. You are not just wolfless, Ember. You are something that should stay buried." Before I could speak, Elder Vacre raised his staff. "The rejection is witnessed. For the crime of tainting a noble bloodline, Ember Blackthorne is sentenced to exile in Ironhold." Gasps rippled through the hall. Ironhold. Where they sent criminals to mine iron until the mountain took them. A death sentence dressed as justice. "She's just a child!" Aunt Sarah broke through the crowd. Guards caught her before she reached me. Her face, when they held her back, was the face of someone watching something they had always feared finally arrive. Marcus didn't look at me as they dragged me away. The last thing I saw was Celeste. Not triumphant, not cruel. Still. Watchful. The face of someone observing the outcome of a plan laid long before tonight. I thought of the moon flowers she had always said were her favourite too. The ones she had helped Aunt Sarah plant in our garden when we were twelve, laughing in the dirt with summer all around us. They threw me into a prison wagon still in my ceremony dress. As Dreadfang Peak disappeared behind us and the wasteland stretched ahead, something cold and certain settled in my chest. Not despair. Something harder. Something that did not have a name yet but felt, strangely, like the first honest thing I had felt all evening. I would survive Ironhold. I would find out what Celeste knew about my purple eyes. And I would make every single one of them answer for tonight. In the distance, wolves howled ancient, wrong and strangely familiar, like a song in a language I had never been taught but somehow already knew. I pressed my mother's necklace between my fingers and listened.
