Chapter 1 "Ava was at home alone, it was snowing outside and her parents were supposed to be back by eight pm but it was already nine pm and they weren't back yet. She started to worry and called her mom. “Hey, Mom, where are you? You said you'd be home by eight” Ava said. “We're on our way, sweetie, just running a bit behind. We'll be there soon,”her mom replied. But thirty minutes went by and they still hadn't come home. Ava was getting really scared now. She tried to wait for them but she ended up falling asleep. Then she was woken up by a knock at the door. She looked at the time and it was eleven pm. She stood up from her bed. She went to her parents room to see if they were back, but they weren't. So she went to open the door and that's when she saw two police officers. “Can I help you?” Ava asked. “Are you Ava Morales?” one of the officers asked. 'Yes, that's me. What's going on?' Ava replied. “I'm afraid we have some bad news. Your parents were involved in a car accident tonight. They didn't survive, I'm so sorry Ava.” the officer said. Ava's world went blank as she processed the news. She stood motionless on her spot, her eyes were so wide that the officers thought they would pop out of their stuck. “What? You must be mistaken. I talked to my mom on the phone just a few hours ago, what are you saying?”she asked, tears welled up in her eyes and she let them out. “Am sorry Ava,”the officers said. The officer turned to his colleague, they exchanged pitiful glares as they watched sixteen year old Ava cry. “No, this cannot be happening. Where are my parents?”Ava asked. “Their crop is in the muchuray,”the other officer replied. “Take me to them”she said, and they lead her out of the house into their car. As they drove into the highway, many thoughts clouded Ava's mind, she still can't believe her parents are dead. Why is everything happening so fast? She rest her head in the car window letting the tears ran down her cheeks. The car stood Infront of the hospital, Ava came down from the car a almost immediately. She ran into the hospital making the officers to ran while trying to keep up with her pace, without meeting the receptionist she ran into the muchuray ward only to meet her Anuty crying by the entrance. “Anuty Sophia”Ava called out with shaky voice, Sophia looks up and she broke into more tears when she saw Ava. “Ava”she called back cleaning her tears, Ava sniffed and rushed into Sophia's embrace breaking into tears. “Aunty Sophia, the police told me that my parents are dead. Please tell me that it's not true, please, please”Ava cried more. “I'm sorry, Ava. I still can't believe it”Sophia replied. “No, no,” Ava's and Sophia's cries of pain for their loved ones filed the hall, each not wanting to believe the life of their love ones are gone. Not just gone by gone for good. Two days as gone by in a blink of an eye and it was Ava's parents funeral, the family friends and colleagues where dressed in thick black dresses because of the cold weather and it was also snowing. Ava stood in the front row with Sophia and her best friend lilly Chan standing beside her, Ava was weping silently while lily tried confronting her. Lily whipped the tears that gathered in her eyes before patting Ava on her back. The funeral was finally over and family members and friends came to show their respect to the late couple, Julian Morales and Ruby morales. Some group of people walked to Ava dressed in all black, they all had this sorrowful look on their faces. “Hi Ava, my name is James. We are colleagues from your parents workshop, we just wanted to say this unexpected incident took a toll on all of us. Please you are still young, try keeping your parents legacy alive and always stay strong. When your parents were alive they would always talk about you, and how good of a daughter you are to them. They wanted you to live a happy life and we hope that you get over their death soon”James said, rubbing her shoulder slowly. He reached for his pocket and brought out a card “Here is my business card, please call me anytime you need help. I will be willing to help. We will be willing to help no matter what the situation is, it's the list we could do”James said and handed her the card which she took with a heavy heart. “Take care Ava,”a woman said and Ava nodded with tears pouring from her eyes down to her cheeks. Lily hugged her from beside and she cried on Lily's arm's while Sophia patterned her back. The night came too, Ava was cuddling her legs to her chest as she sat on the floor inside her new room since she had moved in with her Anuty. Her face was void of all emotions, but deep down she is drawning in pain. Her heart was hurting but her face was blank, a shiver ran down her spine when the thought of her being an orphan hit her. “Why me? Am only sixteen, why me?”she screamed out in agony breaking into another round of tears, Her door was pushed open with force and lily rushed in. “Ava”she called and knelt beside Ava, “lily I don't want to live, I want to be with my parents Lily I miss them”she cried and lily hugged her head to her stomach. “You are so selfish, Ava. I understand your pains but are you gonna leave me behind? Do you even care about me? We are all hurt. Nobody planned for this to happen so why are you saying such horrible things?”lily questioned. “Lily, lily an sorry”she apologized with tears pouring down slowly from her eyes down to her cheek. “It's ok, Ava. I understand your pain.”Lily said and they both went silent, only the low sniffing from Ava could be heard. They stayed like that for some minutes and after a while Ava raised her head to look at Lily's face, her arms wrapped round Lily's waist. “Are you leaving today?”Ava asked. “Not until you are fully heal”Lily answered. “Thank you”Ava muttered. “What are friends for?”Lily asked and the door was opened by Sophia, Sophia walk in and her gaze locked with Lily's. She muttered a, “how is she to lily”and lily nod in response. She walked to their front and knelt before them. “Ava I made your favourite cookie, would you like to try some?”Sophia asked and Ava shake her head negatively. “Ava, please eat something you haven't eaten a thing for days now”Sophia convinced but that only made Ava burst into tears. “How do you expect me to eat”Ava asked with shaky voice. “Am sorry, Ava I will leave you too alone”Sophia stood up and walked out of the room, while Ava was still crying. “If you keep bringing out does tears from your eyes I will just go pack my bags and leave.”lily threatened and whipped the tears from Ava's cheek. “Am sorry”Ava mumbled. “Stop apologizing and stop those tears from pouring”Lily command and Ava did as she was told. “lets go eat the cookies Anuty shopia, ok.”lily said and stood up on her feet, she helped Ava on her feet and they went out of the room together. “This will be the first time you will be stepping out of your room since two weeks”Lily said to Ava as they sat at the waiting area of the airport, waiting for the announcement of lily's flight. “Am so happy for my girl”Sophia said and kissed Ava's cheek, Ava lips spread into a fake smile. “Am happy that you are finally getting over everything”Lily said. “Humm”Ava hummed her reply. truth be told she hasn't gotten over anything, the thought of her parents being gone not leaving her mind for a split second. “Oh, it's time”Lily tapped Avas lap bringing her out of sorrowful thought, after the announcement of her flight echoed through the airport. They all stood up on their feet and lily held her bag, ready to leave. “See you later Ava,”lily said and hugged Ava. “Aunty Sophia”lily called and hugged Sophia. “Safe journey”Ava wished and kiss lily on her cheek. “Promise me that you won't cry”Lily said bringing out her pinky finger and Ava crossed it with her pinky finger and a smile that seems almost fake. “I won't I promise”Ava smile. “ok byee”lily waved at them as she walked out of their sight. “Byee”Ava and Sophia waved her back. “Ava”Sophia called. “Hmm”Ava hummed a reply. “Let's go I have work to do”Sophia said and lead Ava out of the airport, they entered Sophia's car parked outside. “Fasten your seat belts”Sophia said and Ava did just that. Sophia twisted the keys and the engine roared to life, she turned on the radio and drove into the road. Ava rest her head on the window, like before many thoughts clouded her mind and one of does thought are. She is now an orphan.
