Chapter 8

Aurora rummaged through her bags and looked for a dress. She didn’t think she needed a dress set to kill for her trip home but brought one anyway. Thankfully she did, without knowing her desperate need for it. She pulled out a black silk dress with an elegant Sakura design on the side. She smiled mischievously and got dressed. She went to her full-length mirror and looked. The dress fit like a glove and she loved how it looked. She sighed happily and couldn’t wipe her devilish grin off her face. The clock struck twelve and her anticipation level went higher. She pulled her heels on and went to fix her hair. In the past, her hair had been an unruly mess of curls but she had let Renee fix her up like a Barbie. Now her hair was pin straight with bangs somewhat covering her face on the left side. She had to admit she looked flawless. She applied a little makeup that was only lip gloss, mascara, and eyeliner. She grabbed her bag, keys, jacket, and phone before taking one last look at herself in the mirror. She held onto the door frame and smiled at herself yet again. She quickly walked down the stairs and heard her mother watching TV. It made her happy that she could spend minutes with her mom without realizing how hurt she was in the past. This was the relationship she wanted. She walked to the living room and sat next to her mom who turned out to be watching a soap opera. She heard her mom sniffling beside her and she rolled her eyes. Renee did the same thing. She would lie on the couch of their house and watch her little shows. Sometimes she would babble about how this one had been deprived of seeing that one and send herself into a crying streak. Aurora thought it was sadder to watch her cry over something as silly as those TV shows. Renee needed a boyfriend to tear her away from that crap. If only, Aurora thought to herself with a smile. She couldn’t handle Renee’s ways maybe a guy would have gotten crazy being around her. She was so unorthodox. She heard her mom sniffle louder and she turned to face her. She knew Renee and her mom would like each other and mostly talk about mushy romantic crap while Aurora stayed in the room. “Mom you’re getting your shirt wet.” She said jokingly. Maria turned to her and frowned. Before Aurora knew it her mom threw a pillow at her. Aurora caught the pillow and laughed, her lungs constricting painfully. Her mom frowned and turned her attention back to the TV. Aurora found herself looking towards the TV just as some actors kissed. “Uh mom, why were you crying if they were going to kiss? Isn’t that a good thing?” She questioned. “It’s because they just realized they loved each other. It’s so touching.” Her mom said before transferring into a bawling mess. Aurora sat and rolled her eyes. If this was the woman who gave birth to her, then who did she inherit her strong demeanor from? Aurora looked at the wall clock and decided to leave. “Wish me luck, mom. I get to meet up with old faces.” She said giddily. Maria smiled at her display and waved her daughter goodbye. Aurora entered her car and brought it to life. She glanced out the window and looked up at the barely blue sky. She knew it wouldn’t rain but the sky had many fluffy white clouds covering any sign of blue. To Aurora, it was a beautiful day. She backed out of the driveway and drove to her old high school. As she drove through the town she looked at old places she spent time at. There were her friend’s houses and those places she hung out at. She passed by the old park where that picture of her and Tristan was taken and felt a chill run through her spine. She slowed down while viewing a group of teens laughing and hugging on the cool grass field. It reminded her of before. She drove off quickly, shaking her thoughts away. Before she knew it she had reached the school. It looked the same. The boring gray paint had lost its glow since it had been newly painted when she graduated. A big gym, a football field, a soccer field, a basketball court, and buildings made for classrooms. It was indeed a big school. Nostalgia kicked in and she quickly brought herself to reality. She parked her car in the parking lot she recalled kissing Tristan for the first time. It was while he sat on the hood of his truck. She had gotten so jealous of all those girls saying how nice it was to kiss him since he was a player. She was scared he would dump her soon, so she went for it. Little did she know, Tristan was willing to stick around as long as it took just to be with her. It was so embarrassing but their kiss was steamy and lasted a good, solid two minutes. It wasn’t her first kiss, but it was way more gut-wrenching. She groaned to herself back to reality and got out of her car. She took a deep breath and strutted toward the gym. There was a huge banner that said Welcome Back Class of 1993. She felt her belly do another flop and with all her willpower she entered the school gym, even more nervous than she thought she would be.
