The next morning as she woke up Aurora stared at the ceiling. As she looked up she smiled lightly. This was it the day of the reunion. She got out of her bed and walked sleepily down the stairs. The smell of coffee made her giddy and she walked faster. As she entered the kitchen she viewed her mom humming yet again and pouring coffee into a big mug. As her mom heard her come in, she smiled and greeted her. Aurora sat on a stool and watched as her mom moved around the kitchen dizzily.
“Mom I’m going to do a little running around today and later on I’m going to my high school reunion.” She said enthusiastically.
Maria looked at her daughter as she smiled wide. She didn’t see her smile in so long. Truthfully, she hadn’t even remembered when the last time was.
“Well, that’s good. You haven’t seen those people in a long time. It’s time to show them how beautiful you turned out to be. They’re going to be so star-struck.” Her mom said giddily.
Aurora stared as her mother moved around her animatedly. This is it, she thought, today is the day you show them all you’re still here.
“Thanks, Mom. By the way, did you invite Tristan here last night?” she said curiously.
Her mom smiled at her sheepishly. “I’m guessing you’re upset about it?” her mom said.
Aurora shrugged. “Not really. I was just shocked really. I mean Tristan and I had a past that didn’t end so great but it was nice seeing him.” Aurora said plainly.
Maria smiled at her daughter yet again. “You know you’ve become very mature,” Maria said calmly.
Aurora looked up at her mom and thought about her comment. Had she become that mature? She hoped so. Aurora left the kitchen with a smile. She headed to her room and tossed her suitcases onto her bed. She couldn’t decide what to wear. Truthfully, all those girls she had hung out with in high school were fit to be models. She knew she couldn’t compete with them now but she decided she had changed. She waltzed to her wall full of pictures and viewed her old friends.
There was Roxy who always thought she was the outcast of their group. She was nothing near it. The little brunette had been shy and probably never changed. The boys came knocking on her doors quicker than ever, but she still never felt confident with herself. Next Jen; was so full of joy and happiness that sometimes it was too hard to resist smiling along with her. Alexa was the other firecracker in the group. She might as well have had no shame or humility. She didn’t listen to anyone. She usually flipped them off and screamed some curse at them while everyone just watched. She was loud and reckless yet had a heart of gold. Her looks were sharp and set to kill. Then there was Tina. She was the mom of the group. If any of them had boy problems Tina was the first one they would consult with. She was pretty but didn’t believe anyone who said so. Hopefully, Mr. Right had found her and drilled in her head the knowledge that she wasn’t ugly. They together were an interesting group.
Each one of them was different from the other. Aurora wished they hadn’t changed as she had. She moved to her other pictures of her close friends who were guys. Anthony was the boy next door her whole adolescent life. He was that guy she might accidentally tell all her secrets to without caring. He was that close of a friend. He had that feeling around him that made her calm. He looked like any average, yet not average, boy. Dark hair and big brown eyes topped off with his lean body. Too bad Tristan was even more amazing. Anthony was drool-worthy. Her next friend was Max. He was that guy you would never expect to be a jock. He was kind of nerdy with glasses to top it off but no one messed with him. Before senior year he had gotten contacts that made him look godly.
Aurora had to help him beat off girls once too many times. He could shoot hoops, score a touchdown, and hit a home run faster; he was the MVP they all loved. That was why Aurora had loved competing against him. She was competitive and so was he. Jack was the next exciting friend. He was an artist. He was enthralled by drawing scenic things and was quite amazing at it too. He was shy but a big softy when it came to romantic things. Aurora had to admit it was fun to be with him and be his muse for his drawings.
Ah, friendship was such a great thing. Her world full of indignant people melted away as she spent time with these people. Tristan was part of their group. That was how she fell for him. Knowing him for all that time she knew more about him than anyone. She moved away and a fuzzy feeling expanded in her stomach. Within hours she would show them, and she became what she wanted. She wasn’t that naïve little girl they were so used to anymore. It was her time to be on top of the world.
