Within the walls
{Evelyn}
I walk into the school building for the first time with a black backpack filled with my new textbooks, my fresh new clothes neat and crisp, and my heart nearly pounding out of my chest at the fact that I’m actually at a school for people just like me.
My parents told me three weeks ago that my secret abilities aren’t a secret. I was a future superhero, and if I wanted to strengthen my powers I was going to have to transfer to Super hero high.
So here I am..
Here..
In a school with other students who are probably stronger than me..
No I shouldn’t think like that..
Should I?
I venture deeper into the school as I stop the door that says “principal’s office” and I calmly walk in to a very timid seeming lady with round glasses and pigtails as she’s taking notes in her journal.
She pauses her writing when she spots me and she instantly lights the room up with her warm and inviting smile.
Principal Hatsen: Ah! Evelyn! I’ve been expecting you. I’m Ms. Hatsen, your principal for the next four years.
I sit in the chair across her desk as I gently set my bag down.
Evelyn: Hello..great to meet you. I’ve heard so much about this school.
Principal Hatsen: Only good things I hope!~ So, what brings you here to Super hero high?
I stare at my hands, the words catching in my throat like they don’t want to be heard, as if I’m self consciously telling myself I shouldn’t be talking.
Evelyn: Both my parents have powers..I have them too but whenever I went to regular school..I got bullied so bad that I’d lash out and harm someone with my abilities and end up getting expelled.
As I ranted on about my past experience in other schools, I notice she just sat there, watching, listening, WAITING for me to finish as she seemed to have no intention of stopping me.
It felt nice..
It felt raw..
It felt..normal.
After I finished ranting I look at her as I notice she just sits there with a solemn look as she takes her round glasses off and looks at me with a slight smile.
Principal Hatsen: Evelyn..I completely understand what you’ve been though, everyone here has had a experience like yours one point in their life. You will find yourself here at home if you’ll have us. I promise you that this school will be different, not like you haven’t heard that before.
I look at her as I slowly nod with her words while slowly processing them like I’m slowly digesting food.
Evelyn: Thanks..for that.
In a swift motion she hands me flyers and my schedule for the school year with a warning smile on her face
Principal Hatsen: Listen Evelyn, I wont say that you can stay avoiding people for your time here, but at least try to make some sort of connection here. This school is a save haven for kids like you, believe it or not, I wasn’t lying when I said there are kids here who have been through Exacaly what you’ve been through.
I look at her as she walks to a wall full of pictures in her office as it’s mostly her with various of students who seem to feel completely safe with her through the various photos of smiles and safe seemingly atmosphere.
Principal Hatsen: These photos I like to keep because they’re reminders of how I succeed making the students here feel safe here like they’re at home.
I stare at the photos as I take in the feeling they give off, happy and safe.
Evelyn: Have you ever failed making a student comfortable?
Principal Hatsen: Not as of now..but I’d like to keep it that way. The thought of a student not feeling safe here at this school breaks my heart already, but them forever feeling that way is just..devastating.
I watch her reaction as I notice her face looking very sad and droopy as she continues to speak.
Principal Hatsen: Evelyn, promise me you will at least try to warm up here, we’re not a bad school at all. I promise you that were perfectly safe and if you do have ANY problems here, my door is always open and you can talk to me.
I nod as I turned to the door and paused at it as I looked at her one more time before I left.
Evelyn: I’ll try my best..to live it here, you’ll see.
