That night was quite a life expectancy night. The gentle winds seemed to become harsh on them. Her heart raced faster and usually skipped. She'd lost count of how fast or slow her breath was as she watched her son who was at the other end of the room drawing on his book. Lena prayed that night would be quick so she would leave the entire empire with her son. Her husband, the empire's army general had made a bargain with the devil's cheerleader, the empress. He'd wanted to recover his assets which the empress had seized. She gave him the task to get three ancients for her, male or female but getting one ancient was far more difficult than breathing in the water.
Now, her husband's failure to get the ancients has made the empress come after their son after finding out he was an ancient. They had no idea she found out until this night. Lena hoped she'd never come for them until tomorrow morning when she'd gotten enough time to sneak Gavin out of the whole empire. The city gate must have been shut, making it difficult to get away that night. Then she realised the importance of being in a clan. She had gotten messages from the said Satra clan to bring her son into the clan but she had declined. She refused to let her son be convicted into societies of any sort, like she'd thought. She cursed herself under her breath for being too over protective of her son. The clan would have been of much help if she had allowed him to be converted.
The clock in the room seemed to tick much slowly than usual, reminding her of the impending danger. The empress never loses a bargain, its either you lose and forget the reward or you thread your life. Her head ached as she stared at the portraits of the ten year old Gavin with her. Gavin looked so innocent no one would believe he was an ancient, one of the strongest of paranormals dominating his body. His face reminded her of her husband. The empress had ordered that he be locked up later in the day for keeping their son even after knowing what he was. The empress wanted to get all the paranormals of any sort in the empire exterminated. Of course her son was not an exemption when she found out. And Lena believed the empress would come for him.
Lena sighed when she remembered the empress was not more than a fox. She was beautiful but even more deadly than the paranormals whom she believed were threats to the humans. Remembering she was still pacing around the room, she sighed and sat on the bed.
Her head throbbed, her heart skipped and her lips quivered. She was tense. She couldn't imagine watching her son getting beheaded at the imperial courtyard. She shut her eyes and let the pain slid through her.
Gavin had no idea of what was going on. The only thing he knew was that his movements around the empire were suddenly restricted. He knew his body worked fine but it was as though something else controlled his every action. Sometimes he didn't have control over what his body did. His mind would want to do something but he would end up doing another. He didn't notice his mother's discomfort and the hovering tension. All he knew at the moment was how to make his oil painting scenic.
Gavin remembered burning his classmate's wrist when he'd bullied him. He remembered wrapping his palms around his wrist in anger from his everyday's bullying. He had imagined pushing him into his father's fireplace and watching him burn. He felt strong energy emanate from him and leave through his palms. His body became hot as he watched the bully scream in pain. Then he stared at his wrists and realized the pain he'd caused the psycho. He stared at his palms in disbelief like this were never his palms, he must have stolen someone else's palms. He fled the school that instant and never returned. His parents never allowed him either. Since then, he'd lost count of what the outskirts of the empire looked like.
Throughout that day, he hasn't seen his father. He had asked his mother where his father was but she told him he was on a trip.
Lena watched her son over and over again. She had no idea how she would protect him if the empress decides to take him that night. She wasn't a war general like her husband but she could be whatever she'd wanted saving her son and keeping him from danger.
Then it came, what she'd feared most rose in the air. She held her breath and strained her ears to confirm her fears. There it was, footsteps on the rush. The footsteps rose like they were more than ten valiant men in the house. She heard some noise under her, they were already in the house. Her fears were confirmed.
"Come dear! Come my dear!" Lena called to Gavin.
She could fear her fears both on her face and her palms as her palms became sweaty. She felt the perspiration on her forehead and felt the hairs on her back stand. Gavin walked over to Lena and sat beside her on the bed with his eyes fixed on hers in search of answers. Inquisitive about why she looked so afraid.
The footsteps grew even the more, on the stairs, beneath them, everywhere. Lena held her son firmly. She gripped him by the shoulders and never lost sight of the door. Her eyes were searching the door waiting for when it will burst open so she could turn into a lioness and kill all her enemies, all the empress' enforcers both those who'd taken her husband. Anger rose within her.
Everywhere became quiet again, her heart pounded heavily as she continued staring at the door waiting for the knob to turn. It was so quiet in the room that a pin drop would be so deafening.
"They're here" Lena whispered under her breath but Gavin seemed to hear more than he should.
"Who are here? Are they here for us?" Gavin could read the expression on her face. He was not in his ancient form now, he only had the normal child front. Lena for once turned to stare at Gavin with concern written all over her face.
"Listen, am going to hide you right now. Wherever I keep you, make sure you don't make a sound until everything is over. Do you understand?"
Gavin was flustered, he could sense the fear in her voice. "Why? Who is coming for us? The empress?"
"Just do as I said Gavin and stop asking questions. This is bigger than that. Its not the empress either" Of course she wouldn't want to divulge the information to him, not when his life is at stake. The empress could take him out without stress. She wouldn't want to risk it, Gavin had to hide. She would protect him, so what if her husband is not around to do that.
"I can protect you mum! I can protect us - "
Lena managed to laugh, "Gavin, just do as I said. Your father and I are doing nothing but protecting you"
"Where is father then?"
"He went on a trip Gavin. I thought we've discussed this - "
"Yes we have - but am not so satisfied with that. And who are those people in the house?"
Lena had to ignore his questions this time, he was no more than an inquisitive child now. With eyes back to the door, she helped Gavin into the giant wardrobe and carefully closed it.
"No matter what you hear Gavin, don't come out and don't make a sound"
"I can still help mum - "
Lena ignored him and moved to the chest drawer beside the bed and withdrew her Uzi. She walked to the door like her legs were moving freely in the air, avoiding contact with the floor. She got to the wall beside the door and reclined to it, her heart beating fast. Then she began the count down with her fingers clutching the gun tightly with her right hand.
She looked like a rogue, a spy in her black rubber jackets over skinny pants, her hair in a mess. She heard gunshots and a deep moan coming from the door, someone was shot.
The door flung open and she heard the thud of a body in the room. She gasped as she watched the mutilated body on the floor. Her mind went damp and her fingers became numb. She felt the courage to fight leave her body as she watched the awful sight. Fresh blood was oozing out from the body. Her eyes burned as she let the hot tears flow freely, it was her husband.
Two male figures dressed in dark suit and sunshade glasses walked into the room. Her muscles tightened, her jaws clasped and she folded her fingers into a fist. The sound from the gun shook her body, she couldn't believe she'd killed two people at once that night. Raw taste of disgust swiped through her, this was what it felt to commit murder. She wouldn't be penalized, hers was different. She was only a mother fighting to save her son.
Rays of light from the little opening of the wardrobe illuminated the stuffy space Gavin was occupying and he had seen it all. The body of his father and two other men. Anger rose within him. He could feel anger and fear in him at the same time. His pulse became faster as he felt his body become hot, his palms were sweaty. His head throbbed. He could sense something else taking over his senses and body movements. It was coming back to him, the powers.
The gun shots in the room seemed to have informed the others of her presence in the room as quick footsteps were heard rushing towards the door.
Slowly with the gun still in her hand, she bent over to her husband's body. "I told you not to accept her offer. She is nothing but a viper Leo but you insisted to avoid suspicions. Now - " Lena sobbed lightly. Realizing the footsteps were closer now, she withdrew from the body and slid behind the door.
Two figures walked in again, this time they were much huge. Lena pointed her gun forward and shot the first then she saw the gun move out of her hand. The second had hit her hands, had seen her and had thrown the gun out of her hand. She was still in shock when she felt a bulgy hand push he to the wall.
"Aren't you so smart Lena?"
Lena hissed. Her most dreaded enemy from teen was standing right before her trying to overpower her. She watched his eyes go down to her chest. She couldn't control it when he turned her face to the wall and held her hands tightly behind her. She was helpless. He is too huge and too strong for her. She allowed him tuck her hair behind her ear revealing her neck. He pulled her jacket backwards to see more of her flawless skin. Lena gasped at that.
"The empress would be so glad watching me have my deepest desire. If you had chosen me over him, you wouldn't have been in this mess. Even if we have an ancient, he would still be protected'
"To hell with you and your sister!"
The man scoffed not taking his eyes away from her neck. Without hesitation, he made for her neck and began caressing her with his tongue like a starved philanderer. Lena felt the sensation burn through her. She couldn't remember the last time her husband touched her that way. Not since the task of finding ancients for the empress. But it was her son's life that is at stake, she would do anything for him. With all her prowess, she kicked back to his groins and allowed him absorb the pain. She made for the gun at the other end of the room breaking a vase on the way but too late the man gripped her by her arm and pushed her to the ground.
Pain from the fall moved through her skull and spine. The man bent over her and ripped off her jacket and inners revealing the upper part of her breast. Lena struggled to free herself, she kicked and struck but he was trained for this. With his giant hand, he cupped her breast and pressed it further down sending further pains and sensations through her. He was enjoying the moment forgetting what he was originally there for, the boy.
Lena caught sight of the broken vase by the door, she relaxed and allowed him get on with the act as she carefully picked a piece of the glass. The man froze when he felt the glass tear into his face. He angrily stood from her with his left hand cupping the wound on his face. He pointed his gun at Lena.
"b***h! Go to hell!"
Lena was helpless. She made to stand but his boots brought her back and she quivered when the first and second shots made its way into her skull. The man sighed looking at his blood stained collar. He was surprised when he saw the wardrobe burst open and Gavin was standing there. His whole body drenched, too wet one would think he'd just returned from the pool.
"Oh! There you are! I didn't know getting you would be so easy" the man said rather sarcastically.
Gavin's fists tightened as he saw his mother and father in their own pool of blood. He concentrated the energy in him to flow through his arms as he watched the man point the gun at him. His mind was weak but his body was unusually strong and had lots of control over this. He watched his palms release the energy towrds the man and then he watched him burn and scream in pain. Gavin was surprised, he had done it again.
His mind wanted him to move to his parents as he watched them but his body propelled him forward out of the room. No one else was in the house. His body ached as he heard the man's screams again. He needed to rest, he was too tired. Too much strength had gone out of him but he kept moving, burning through everything and everyone on the way until he got through the gate.
