It was dark already when she stopped in front of the mall. This was the only mall in town which she believed must have what she was looking for in the exact way she'd wanted it. She never believed she would stay at the office long enough to 8pm. It was her first day anyways. She's likely to stay back to learn everything about her new office. Daren had congratulated her on her first presentation, that alone made her much satisfied with the day. The cars caught in the heavy traffic honked and honked endlessly. She heard shouts, people were quarrelling already. She hated traffic. Instead of getting caught in a traffic, she would find her way by vanishing. It was much more faster than an aircraft itself.
She walked into the mall and strode to the snack counter. She needed some cereal, chocolate and some Shiraz. She'd grown to love chocolates and grape drinks. Lately, she'd been too lazy to make her own food, switching to fast foods at each point.
Her parents had died in an auto crash in the late century. Her head spinned and her palms became sweaty when she remembered it all over again. Her parents had been declared missing, of course missing. Their bodies were never recovered for the burial because it had gone up in flames before touching the Pacific. Her mind went damp, her face tightened. Of course, she wasn't going to cry in the mall. Her tears wouldn't bring her parents back to her. She hoped she would get to see them again. She remembered throwing everything that belonged to them into the river to go with the river they had landed into. Then, she thought she might not survive the trauma because the receding pain banged her each time she got home.
The room her parents once walked, talked and played in now looked lonely and dead without them. Being their only child, she had grown around her parents all along. They had loved her unconditionally even after knowing she had some mysterious powers. Those days, she remembered falling headlong from the tree in their compound and landing firm on both feet. She remembered pulling their cupboard when she was barely eleven. Her parents got a glimpse of all these and covered her, teaching her to live normal not until after their death when Sequina converted her, being a new birth. She'd wished her parents had listened to her when she told them to forget the conference they had gone for.
She picked her choicest cereal brand and the rest in a shopping basket and walked to the counter. There were three men at the counter. One was closer to the scanning machine while the other two sat beside him looking jobless at the moment. It was obvious they came to visit him.
She shove the contents of the basket to the man and he told her the price. Carefully, she slipped out her debit card and paid instantly as the man packed her goods in a nylon bag.
She was surprised the man withheld the bag from her which he had almost handed to her.
"What's the problem?"
"You are the problem- "
Mona was more than shocked. What insolence! What does this mere mortal think of himself to question her that way? And besides from what she'd seen, she was careful enough not to cause problems for anyone she has come across.
"Did I pay half the bill?" Mona asked still ignorant. She was too surprised to try reading his mind which would have been much easier.
"What are you doing here? Why here of all places?"
There he was again. She'd realized the way he was studying her when she came to pay for the goods she needed. He must have known her from somewhere to question her that way otherwise he might have lost his senses. She watched him stand up from his chair, dropping the packaged goods on the desk. He was still staring at her. She could sense the growing anger in him from the look of disgust in his eyes.
Did he know her from somewhere? Why try to start a fight she was sure he won't finish? Do not use powers on humans does not mean allow humans humiliate and crush her ego. They would taste her fury if they do so to her. Just then, she saw the glistening eyes of the other two men, they were paying full attention now.
"He doesn't look OK. What's wrong with him?" Mona said to the two guys. She had hoped they would intervene and talk some sense into the psycho before her, but they still sat unmoved staring at her like a log of wood. Then her anger began to rise, is this how they harass their customers?
"Can I have my goods now? I don't have time for this stupid behavior of yours" Mona said when she had elicited no response from the other men.
"You have crossed all limits for stepping into our territory" he pointed to his chest and continued, "my territory!"
Mona heard the doors slam shut. What the hell was going on? Who is this guy? What territory is he talking about? What sort of problem has she gotten herself into? She still couldn't figure it out. Anger and confusion was written all over her face, she had to act. This guys has automatically locked the doors, that meant they planned on keeping her hostage.
"If this continues, I am going to call the police" Mona threatened the way she believed normal humans would.
"Go the hell on! You can go ahead to call whoever you wish to call. But I guarantee you, none of them will leave here alive. You can't deny it, its written all over you" he pointed to her head and body in a round gesture.
"What is he talking about?"
"Please am just returning from work exhausted and famished. I need to get home, freshen up and eat something nice. If you got a chance to have escaped from the psychiatric hospital, I sure would help you find it again. Just hand over my goods" Hot anger was detected in her tone as it flushed in her cheeks as well.
The man scoffed, "Alphas and their fronts- "
He had it now, she got it all. What she had prayed not to witness was here before her when she was more than exhausted to fight. Someone from the Satra clan no doubt has found her out. How could he detect it to easily? She had hidden all her alpha fronts and tried to play normal human. How did a Satra commoner find her out? Her mind thought it out, only a clan messenger or reiki could find an alpha even in his or her highest form of secrecy. Why now of all times? When she has no control or knowledge of her said powers. The Satra clan has lost their alpha, one of the greatest of their time and must be furious they had lost to an adversary in collaboration with her clan.
"After taking away our alpha, no alpha dares cross my path and leaves alive"
"What rubbish are you talking about?" Mona had to feign ignorance, she was not ready to pick up a fight. "What do you mean by being an alpha or not?"
His eye seemed to change, he was ready to let hell lose on her. She wouldn't dare to fight back considering she may be outnumbered. For this guy to say something like this before the other two men who were watching them, this meant they were also part of the clan but probably commoners. Everyone in the mall seemed not to notice what was happening, they had thrown the protective shield.
"Each of your clan members must pay for the death of our alpha!" He lunged at her. She took two steps backward in fear as she cowered. When she didn't feel any pain or sudden burst into her, she knew something was wrong. Slowly, she took her hands off her face to see he had stopped mid way with the two others beside him now. They looked like they were ready to take her once.
"She has no business with this" the second man began staring at her. He slowly turned to the angry man, "if she was to be an alpha, she would have fought back the moment you made for her. Let her go- "
"But my thoughts are never wrong. She is an alpha!"
Yes you are not wrong boy. Its just that you are too full of yourself to set a trap for us, mini Mona was at it again.
"Let her go now!"
Mona sensed authority in his voice, he must be the reiki. The first man was only a commoner. A commoner fighting an alpha, Mona would sure have killed him if she had known what her powers were. He was lucky he found her in her halcyon days of power. She heard the doors open. Swallowing a lump in her throat, she still made for her goods on the desk. Leaving it behind would heighten their suspicions and she wasn't ready for a second thought from any of them now. She couldn't handle a commoner now properly let alone a reiki. With that she headed for the door. She felt their eyes on her waiting for a loop to deal with her. They won't get any chance to that.
Standing close to the door, she turned to them "Learn how to be nice to customers and stop behaving like a lost psycho"
She left.
When she got outside, she felt relief surge through her. She couldn't believe she'd left a lion's den unscathed. She had to leave that vicinity as soon as possible. One thing crossed her mind, the fastest way of leaving. She walked to a dark corner and stood in the dark to avoid prying eyes. Slowly, she took a large breath like it would be her last and shut her eyes. When she opened her eyes, she was in her room. Originally her parents house.
She shifted her eyes to the packaged stuff in her hands, still intact. She sighed and slumped into the bed. Without much thoughts, she dropped her bag and walked out of the room to the kitchen to prepare something to eat. She opened the refrigerator, nothing. Too broke to fill her refrigerator with heavy food stuffs, though at the moment she was too heavy to eat a heavy food. A bowl was standing beside the oven. She got it and poured some cereal into the bowl.
For some moment she felt someone else in the room but she wasn't sure. Besides no one would intrude, its her house anyways. But the feeling kept growing, the hair on her back stood when she felt the cold wind move through her. She turned to see Pina at the entrance door.
Mona sighed, "what are you doing here?"
Pina smiled as she relaxed with her back to the door. She wanted to make Mona feel uncomfortable and continue getting scared to death till she faced her worse.
"And I remember telling you to stop coming to my house without my permission" Mona continued, anger in her voice. She has already gotten enough shock for the night and now Pina.
"Lady alpha sorry for my intrusion" Pina smiled even the more. "But don't you think the York clan is at its weakest now? I mean you couldn't face commoners from the Satra clan"
"There was a reiki with them. Commoners and a reiki. And don't you tell me you were stalking me!"
"Why won't I? Mona I heard your gasps, your fear. You were calling for help and luckily I was around to- "
"To what Pina?" Mona interrupted angrily, "you didn't do a thing in there, not a thing. And I can't remember calling you for your damn help" her lips flushed. She wouldn't let Pina see her fear, see her worries or get a single knowledge of it now.
"If I had done anything for you in there, the commoner's claims would be proved and that means a fight. A fight to the death of the commoners and a fight between the whole Satra and York clan. So don't you see, bringing a fight to York clan when the alpha is at her weakest point!"
Pina's travesties were right. This was a position she trained for all her life. Showing her bravery at the slightest opportunity and becoming the closest to Sequina, but the Triad did not choose her. Not even honouring her with a reiki or messenger. She couldn't get the Triad to her favour with her show offs. She met disappointment on the way. Mona believed her anger was justified. She would do so too if she were to be in her shoes, get angry of course.
"You can go now Pina. I need to be left alone- "
"Yes that's what you always say. You allowed the reiki to leave and here you are, cowering before commoners! The York clan is at stake here Mona- "
"I said I want to be left alone Pina! Get the hell out of my house!" Mona had shouted at her. This was the first time she would shout at Pina. She had learned to fear her but the real her wanted to burst her eyeballs open. Pina was becoming too much of a pain in the ass for her.
She watched Pina retreat. Pina wouldn't give up easily, it's not like the Pina she knew. She must have obeyed because she believed there would be consequences if she insisted, not from Mona but directly from the Triad. The Triadic laws forbids intrusion.
"Scott is here" Pina said staring deep into her eyes giving her the look of, "let's see how far you can get with this". Then she vanished.
Goodness! The reiki is back. Sudden bursts of happiness surged through her. Her weak body was suddenly energized. Scott, York clan's reiki is the only one she trusted in her clan along with Lisa, the messenger. She had allowed Scott to go for a conference. She would have stopped him because she wouldn't want to lose him in an autocrash like she'd lost her parents, but Scott was different. He is immortal, he can't die in a human crash. He would definitely find his way out of the plane even before the crash happens. That was one thing she liked about the Triad and the clans, immortality.
From the kitchen, she could hear the door bell. Scott was at the door. She had to go let him in. She couldn't believe she was running to open the door for him. She took a deep breath when she was already standing before the door, then she opened it. There he was, looking his nicest in his grey track suit. Scott was hot and particularly stunning with his almost white hair and pale colour. Mona liked him for something, he was the sexiest in the clan. Mona loved sexy guys, but she wasn't a w***e to start a flirt. She'd dated Scott even before becoming the York clan commoner. Though Scott looked so young, he was an ancient.
Without her permission, Scott made for her in a tight grasp as he shut the door behind him. The hug was sudden and unexpected. He had missed her body, missed her fragrance, missed her lips and eyes.
Mona let him have her lip. She felt his soft lips over hers in a soft kiss. Her body quivered. How long she'd wanted to be kissed, but she wasn't expecting it from Scott either. He was her ex mind you, but Scott always had his way.
Scott's lips refused to leave hers. Mona felt their tongues touch as she lost track of time, space and orientation. She wanted more and more and wished it never ends but Scott disentangled and nibbled her earlobe. She heard him whisper, "I've missed you Mona"
"Why did you stop?" Mona found herself shivering. She didn't want the kiss to end. This was one thing she had missed since she broke up with Scott but he keeps coming back to her.
"Do you want more?" Scott smiled. His lips spread out in a smile, really hot to overlook.
Mona couldn't help herself. She cursed herself under her breath for showing him her weakness. She had to do something not before he digests the plea and starts all over again.
"I mean when did you return?" Mona knew she was being ridiculous. Scott knew her even more than she knew herself. Then she felt his hands unwrap her body as Scott made for the sofa.
"No don't leave. Don't stop". She said within her but didn't dare to say it out. She turned to him and saw his face go low. Did she hurt his feelings again? No, she wouldn't be at fault always. She did the right thing this time.
"Just today Mona. I just got back and felt it necessary to come see you" Scott raised his head to stare into Mona's face. She hasn't lost her beauty and sexiness. She was the most natural alpha, so breath taking for him. "How have you been?"
Mona shrugged, she wasn't doing bad though. "Am cool. How was the conference?" Mona asked as she slipped into the sofa opposite him.
"Just as expected. Everything was fine except I wasn't there with you. I've missed you Mona. Your eyes weren't there to stare into and your hands weren't there to caress me"
Mona chuckled. Sweet words from a sweet man. Scott wasn't thinking of starting a new relationship with her and she wasn't ready for it either. Scott was a flirt, a real flirt. One thing she hated about him.
"You have your way with words Scott. We aren't dating- "
"But we are here Mona. You don't understand it still hurts not being with you. It still hurts Mona- "
Mona churned, she wasn't ready to believe Scott's story. "Can I tell you something?"
She saw Scott recline to the sofa, he was ready to hear her out. She desperately wanted to change the topic. Then she began narrating the scene at that mall.
"Those commoners must have lost it! Which mall is that?"
"Its over now Scott. I don't want to give them any conviction that I am the York alpha yet not until I master my powers"
Scott calmed and continued, "that reminds me, you still haven't gone to meet the general alpha. He's the only one who knows how to do that"
"I just got a job Scott. I'll do that when I get that chance to"
"You'll have to quit that job Mona. Don't you get it? Your life and that of the clan is at stake when you are at your weakest. Even the weakest commoner can take you down. You have to train first before any job"
"I understand Scott. I will definitely go for the training".
"When? Until we become puns in the hands of the Satra clan?"
"Just- "
The beeping of the cellphone in her pockets interrupted her reminding her not to get into an argument with Scott and that she was still in her work attire. Scott always wins an argument. It was her boss, Daren. Why was he calling her that late?
"Hi Mona. Sorry to call this late but its quite urgent"
"No problem"
"Emm - I would be going on a two day trip to South Leone to get some shares and would want you to come along".
"When?"
"Tomorrow- "
"Don't you think its too sudden?"
"I know it is, but you have to come along being the creative director"
Mona was a bit uncomfortable, though she'd wanted to go on a trip to anywhere outside Mugeen. This felt like an opportunity she should grab.
"Alright, when is the time?"
"The flight is at 9am so I would pick you up at 8 to the airport"
"OK that's pretty cool"
"See you then"
Daren cut the call. Mona's mind went blank, she was going on a two day trip with her boss first day at work. This was progress.
"Who was that?" Scott asked wide eyed.
Mona was surprised. Scott was monitoring even her calls now. He was crossing all limits.
"Excuse me- "
"Yes Mona, who was that? And what trip are you two talking about?"
"Its a business trip Scott. My boss wants me along. Stop thinking otherwise. I can't decline it"
"You are being selfish now Mona! Too selfish now!"
Mona was shocked, how was she being selfish? That she was pursuing her dreams?
"You need to get started with the training and take up your responsibility at the clan" Scott continued, "anything can happen at any time"
"Is my responsibility at the clan going to take care of my bills?"
"I will take care of that. I promise."
"Oh really. That includes my dependence on you. You never showed this sagacity when I let you go for your conference. Or don't you think you too had a responsibility then?"
Scott only stared at her. She was right. He was the selfish one now.
"I need to get my work set before the training Scott- "
"With the clan scattered as sheep without a Shepherd?"
"You can call it whatever you wish to or see it the way you want to. I am going for this trip and when I return I get started with the training. I promise you that" Mona said rather softly.
Scott stared at her with some satisfaction over his face. Mona got it now, making promises to Scott was like putting oneself in a cage.
