Chapter Seven - Fire Fury

2393 Words
Mona found herself scurrying behind Daren in the busy station. Getting closer to the train was difficult given the number of people clustered at the station. Mona wasn't so comfortable with the idea of using the train instead of a cab. "You have to keep up Mona, else we will miss the train" "I still have no idea why you chose to use the train instead of a cab - " Daren didn't reply her until he got into the train and secured a seat for them. Mona gently sat beside him and looked around giving the idea of "what the hell is this?" "The cab driver called to complain of the traffic on the commercial road. He would pick us from the company after the meeting" "Mmm" Mona nodded slightly to Daren and turned to her right. She wasn't sure of what it felt like using a public train. She heard the doors shut and the wheels vibrate signalling their departure. Her eyes caught a young boy seating at her right all alone. The boy turned to catch her staring at him, Mona wanted to look away but that would be rather too suspicious. She smiled at the boy but he ignored her and turned to his front. He looked a bit messy in a new track suit, his hair and boots were messy. Mona had no idea what the boy must have gone through or what he was about to go through but she had only one strange feeling about this boy. The energy she could feel coming from him was rather too strong for a boy of his age. She tried to call his attention using her mind, the safest way of communication to confirm her fears. The boy's strange behaviour coupled with the strange energy she was getting from him made her nervous. She had to try communicating with him through her mind. He would definitely reply if he is a new birth or an ancient. "Hey - " Mona called but was interrupted by Daren who had been asking her questions all along but she seemed so lost in thoughts about the boy. "Mona, what are you staring at?" Mona tried to relax, she managed a smile at Daren. "Nothing" Daren stared at her like she was lying, like she was really betraying him, like she was planning something evil. He wasn't so satisfied with what she had just said. At that point, the boy was busy searching to hear the voice that had called him but all he could hear was silence. He wasn't so sure he actually heard any voice. He swallowed hard and reclined to his seat, shutting his eyes and reopening them to show his strong anxiety. "I said you will be joining me to meet the manager to finalise the deal and get the shares" "Would that be necessary?" "Of course - why do you think I brought you along?" Mona was tense but she managed to calm her nerves. The boy's presence was gradually making her uncomfortable and insecure. There was something about the boy and she sure had to communicate with him to allay her suspicions. She was so anxious about it now that she had to answer her boss in an awkward way. Sure she was here to help Daren with the shares and the new deal. She is not here to sleep in the same room with him. "OK - Do I have to make any preparations for any of it?" "We would be getting twenty percent of the shares like you suggested while the company will sell part of its establishments to us to start up a new branch here in South Leone" "Wow! You never told me any of that" "Oh really! - It skipped my mind. We will be getting two third of the establishments with already existing foreign capital investments. Its a good start for a new company" "That's good, totally good" Mona was making sure she replied all his statements so fast so she would concentrate on the boy over again. "The new branch will still be working with the bank I guess?" "No - " Daren smiled victoriously like this was the question he had been expecting from Mona since he started the discussion. "It will exist as a single bank now" "Wow - " Mona smiled. "But that's a whole lot of process" "Yeah" Daren reclined confidently to the seat and turned to stare into Mona's face. "This is the last part of it. I started the process since the previous year and I've gotten an approval from the federal bank. We are good to go - " Daren smiled at her and Mona smiled back. Mona didn't reply this time, she continued staring into his blank face. Daren looked out the window and the moment Mona had been waiting for quickly came. She turned to the boy, he was still sitting rather calmly. Mona relaxed and concentrated. "Hey - " This time, the boy turned to stare at Mona following the direction of the voice he heard in his mind. "Oh its you - Why are you calling me?" Mona gasped almost silently. Her suspicions were confirmed, "the boy is one of us" She muttered and stilled her breath. "Sorry to disturb you but - I felt your current. You are one of us, just like me. Which clan are you from?" "I don't belong to any clan or any group. Am just me" The boy looked away and stared out the window. He looked indifferent and rather too mean for a hound boy of his age. "Am sorry if am giving you any discomfort. It will be good if we get to know each other at least. Am Mona - " The boy turned to Mona's direction and still found her staring at him. He sighed, "My name is Gavin" "What about your parents Gavin?" "Don't ask me any of that!" Mona sensed the fury, the rage, the anger and the thirst for revenge in his mind. The voice he heard this time was much masculine than the ones he had been using to speak to her since they began their conversation. Mona concluded, he is an ancient given his two voices. "Am so sorry but - " Mona and Gavin were interrupted by the train officer in charge of tickets. He stared suspiciously at Gavin and Gavin made no attempt to hide his face. "You didn't give your ticket little boy. Are you alone?" The officer stared around and sighted Mona staring at them, he also caught prying the eyes of the other passengers. "Where are your parents?" "Don't ask me that!" Gavin almost shouted but succeeded in calming his temper. He definitely didn't want to use any of his powers on any human. "What do you mean? Where's your ticket?" Gavin ignored the officer this time and turned to the window, his blood thirst and anger rising rapidly within him. "Come on officer, don't frighten him. When we get to the station, you can settle this amicably" someone said from behind Mona. Mona turned to Daren giving him the impression of "can I help him?" But all she got was a blank stare. "You shut your damn mouth and ensure you keep your ass on that seat, fucker!" Mona could sense the pot bellied officer was some sort of bully given the way he was so interested in harassing Gavin. Mona chuckled, he had no idea he was messing with an ancient. She wanted to see what Gavin's powers were and at such made no attempt to calm the officer. The officer quickly pulled Gavin by his right arm and Gavin's face flushed with traces of anger written all over his face. His blood began to boil and his lips quivered. He was trying hard not to strike the officer but he kept tugging him and ended up pushing him to the floor. "Why did you push the poor boy? fucker!" Mona sensed Gavin was controlling his powers but not anymore because she saw his hands lighten up as he turned angrily to the officer with a stoic face. His face partly changed along with his eyeballs. Mona gasped, he is one of the fiercest ancients, the fire breed. They attacked at will and faced no punishment from the Triad due to their natural hot temper. Most of them had less control of their powers when they fight and at such burned everything around them. Gavin's case was different, he had a little control and was born out of nothing but a mixture of rage and revenge. Mona came back to consciousness when she heard the screams of the officer who was burning on the floor under Gavin's fire balls and felt the heat. She looked up to see Gavin still lighting him up and enjoying watching him. Mona looked around watching the humans in the train screaming in surprise and standing farther away from Gavin. She was the only one seating right next to Gavin and the officer. She turned and was surprised when she saw Daren staring coldly at the scene, he didn't run either. She had to do something now because from the voice in the speaker, the train was already close to the station. She remembered something she read from a book about the fire breed when she was being inquisitive about her weird mind powers, "call them, eulogize them and ask them to sleep" Mona concentrated and called Gavin in her mind. "Gavin, son of fire wielding great power. He is lowly and does not match you. Go to sleep and forget his nuisance" Mona stood up and made to walk towards Gavin. Daren was a bit surprised seeing Mona standing slowly. Mona turned to him and back to Gavin. "What are you doing? He's gonna hurt you!" A voice warned Mona from the passengers in the train. "Go to sleep and forget his nuisance great breed" Mona slowly walked to Gavin and he loosened up swallowing up the already ejected fire. Mona caught Gavin who fell back into his hands. His body is too small and fragile to contain the powerful ancient in him hence straining his mind and body in the course of using his fire energy. Mona carried him to her seat while the officer continued burning and writhing in pain. "Holyshit!" Someone yelled from the back again "Mona what are you doing? He's going to hurt you - " Daren said adjusting even the more to avoid contact with Gavin. "He's only a boy - maybe a product of some weird scientific experiments" Mona said to everyone in the train with her gaze still on Daren. "Shut the f**k up! He's a demon! A demon!" Another voice much feminine yelled from behind again. "Shut the f**k up too! He's not a demon! He's a human like us who wants to be loved and nothing more!" Mona turned to Daren giving him the impression of "he doesn't bite" Daren continued staring suspiciously at Mona who carefully adjusted Gavin's hair and wiped the sweat his face. His body was hot, Mona could feel it, he was still vibrating. His kind are the most dangerous and rarest. They fight like animals at each slightest provocation. It takes much training to be able to control their powers. Mona sighed, the little boy definitely must have gone through a lot. "Oh thank goodness! Let's get the hell off - " the voice behind said. Mona heard the passengers jump off the train. Mona and Daren realized they had arrived the station. She turned to Daren and watched him swallow hard still trying to figure out how she managed to calm the boy. She knew he had already prepared a lot of questions to ask him. Gavin woke up and stared into Mona's eyes, he stood up from Mona's lap and left the train without looking back or saying a word. Daren and Mona stared at him as he left surprisingly with mouth agape. "Do you have any idea how many reporters would be out there right now? What were you thinking Mona?" "He's just a boy. I've read a lot of books about people like him" Mona lied. She has to be innocent until she was sure about Daren. "That's why I tried exercising what I read - " "Which is?" "Which is - " Mona turned to stare at Daren, "which is trying to calm him down and eventually it worked" "What if he had hurt you in your adventurous quest?" Mona saw nothing but concern in Daren's eyes this time, "when I was young, I was kinda weird. I would destroy things in the house whenever I got angry. My mum would sing for me and come closer to calm me down and that really helped me stop being animalistic at home" "I didn't hear you sing for him then - " "Why don't we get going sir?" Mona paused but continued, seeing how inquisitive Daren was. "I sang affectionately for him" Mona placed her right palm on her chest and continued. "In my heart, that's how theirs work. When you sing out for them, it is like noise. They hear people's thoughts, that's why he was able to hear me sing in my heart and calmed down into my arms" "I see - " Mona knew she being hilarious. Who would believe such crap? Daren would most certainly believe her, even thank her for saving them else the boy would have ended up burning all of them in the train. She stood and walked pass the officer's badly burnt body without staring at it down to the door with Daren following closely behind. Luckily there were no reporters, only a pair of inquisitive eyes from the passers who must have heard how heroic her action was. She looked around but there was no sign of the boy. He must have vanished, that was something they all had in common, vanishing. "This way - " Daren signalled her to their right and they took the narrow cut. Mona could still sense Daren's doubts but they were few. "Are you still doubting me? Maybe feeling am a demon as well" "No Mona - Am thinking how what you did right there was possible"
