Chapter 3: The Family Business Lexi's phone rang, shrill in the silence of her apartment. She hesitated for a moment before answering it. "Hello?" she said, her voice cautious. "Lexi, it's Dad," a deep voice said on the other end of the line. "I need to talk to you." Lexi's heart sank. She knew that tone, knew that her father was about to ask her for something she didn't want to do. "What is it, Dad?" she asked, trying to sound neutral. "I need you to come to the office," her father said. "We need to discuss the Saint Clair account." Lexi's eyes narrowed. She knew that her father's company, Thompson Industries, was a rival to Julian's company, Saint Clair Enterprises. She also knew that her father had been trying to sabotage Julian's business for years. "What about the Saint Clair account?" Lexi asked, trying to sound nonchalant. "We're going to make a move on Saint Clair Enterprises," her father said. "And I need you to be a part of it." Lexi's heart sank. She knew that she couldn't be a part of her father's plan, not when she was falling for Julian. But she also knew that she couldn't disobey her father, not without consequences. "I'll be there," Lexi said finally, trying to sound resigned. Her father's voice was triumphant. "Good girl, Lexi. I'll see you soon." Lexi hung up the phone, feeling a sense of dread wash over her. She knew that she was caught between her loyalty to her father and her growing feelings for Julian. And she didn't know which way to turn. As she got ready to go to her father's office, Lexi couldn't help but think about Julian. She had been assigned to protect him, but she was starting to realize that she needed to protect herself from him, too. Julian was charming and charismatic, and he had a way of making Lexi feel like she was the only person in the world. But he was also ruthless and cunning, and Lexi knew that he would stop at nothing to get what he wanted. As she arrived at her father's office, Lexi was greeted by a receptionist who looked like she had been molded from the same cookie cutter as all the other receptionists in the world. "Hi, Lexi," the receptionist said, her voice bright and cheerful. "Your father is waiting for you." Lexi nodded, her heart sinking. She knew that she was in for a long and difficult conversation. As she walked into her father's office, Lexi was struck by the sheer size of the room. The office was enormous, with a desk that looked like it had been carved from a single piece of wood. Her father, James Thompson, looked up from behind the desk, a smile spreading across his face. "Lexi, darling," he said, his voice booming across the room. "It's so good to see you." Lexi nodded, trying to sound neutral. "Dad." Her father gestured to a chair in front of the desk. "Sit down, Lexi. We need to talk." Lexi sat down, her heart racing with anticipation. She knew that her father was going to ask her to do something she didn't want to do, and she was determined to resist him. But as she looked into her father's eyes, Lexi saw something there that gave her pause. She saw a glimmer of desperation, a sense of urgency that she had never seen before. "What is it, Dad?" Lexi asked, trying to sound calm. Her father leaned forward, his eyes locked on hers. "We're going to take down Saint Clair Enterprises," he said. "And I need you to be a part of it." Lexi's heart sank. She knew that she couldn't be a part of her father's plan, not when she was falling for Julian. But she also knew that she couldn't disobey her father, not without consequences. "I don't know, Dad," Lexi said finally, trying to sound hesitant. Her father's face darkened, and for a moment, Lexi saw a glimmer of anger in his eyes. "You'll do what I say, Lexi," he said. "You'll do what's best for this family." Lexi nodded, feeling a sense of resignation wash over her. She knew that she was trapped, caught between her loyalty to her father and her growing feelings for Julian. And she didn't know which way to turn. Lexi left her father's office feeling torn and conflicted. She knew that she couldn't betray Julian's trust, but she also knew that she couldn't disobey her father's orders. As she walked back to her car, Lexi's phone rang. It was Julian. "Hey, Lexi," Julian said, his voice low and smooth. "I was wondering if you could come over to my place tonight. I need to talk to you about something." Lexi's heart skipped a beat. She knew that she shouldn't be alone with Julian, not when she was feeling so conflicted. "I don't know, Julian," Lexi said, trying to sound hesitant. "I have a lot of work to do tonight." Julian's voice was persuasive. "It's important, Lexi. Please come." Lexi sighed, feeling like she was being pulled in two different directions. "Okay, fine," Lexi said. "I'll come over tonight." As she hung up the phone, Lexi couldn't help but feel a sense of trepidation. She knew that she was playing with fire, and she wasn't sure if she was ready for the consequences. That night, Lexi arrived at Julian's penthouse apartment feeling nervous and anxious. She was greeted by Julian's assistant, who showed her to the living room. Julian was sitting on the couch, a glass of wine in his hand. He looked up as Lexi entered the room, and their eyes met. For a moment, Lexi felt like she was drowning in Julian's eyes. She knew that she was in trouble, and she didn't know how to escape. "Thanks for coming, Lexi," Julian said, his voice low and smooth. "I appreciate it." Lexi nodded, feeling like she was trapped. "What did you want to talk to me about?" she asked. Julian's eyes locked on hers. "I want to talk to you about us," he said. Lexi's heart skipped a beat. She knew that she wasn't ready for this conversation, but she also knew that she couldn't avoid it. "What about us?" Lexi asked, trying to sound calm. Julian's voice was low and husky. "I think we have a connection, Lexi. A connection that goes beyond just business." Lexi's eyes dropped, and she felt like she was melting into the floor. She knew that Julian was right, but she also knew that she couldn't act on her feelings. "I don't know what you're talking about," Lexi said, trying to sound convincing. Julian's laughter was low and smooth. "Don't lie to me, Lexi," he said. "I can see it in your eyes. You feel it too." Lexi's heart was racing, and she knew that she was in trouble. She was trapped between her loyalty to her father and her growing feelings for Julian. And she didn't know which way to turn. Julian got up from the couch and walked over to Lexi, his eyes locked on hers. "I know that you're feeling conflicted, Lexi," he said, his voice low and smooth. "But I want you to know that I'm not giving up on us. I believe in us, and I know that we can make this work." Lexi shook her head, feeling like she was trapped. "Julian, we can't be together," she said. "My father will never approve, and it will ruin your business." Julian's eyes flashed with determination. "I don't care about my business," he said. "I care about you, Lexi. And I'm willing to do whatever it takes to make us work." Lexi felt a lump form in her throat as she looked at Julian. She knew that he was sincere, and she couldn't help but feel drawn to him. "Why are you doing this, Julian?" Lexi asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "Why are you fighting for us?" Julian's eyes locked on hers, and Lexi felt like she was drowning in their depths. "Because I love you, Lexi," he said. "I love you more than anything, and I'm not willing to give up on us without a fight." Lexi's heart skipped a beat as she looked at Julian. She knew that she felt the same way, but she was scared. She was scared of what her father would do, and she was scared of what might happen to Julian's business. But as she looked into Julian's eyes, Lexi knew that she couldn't deny her feelings anymore. She knew that she had to take a chance on Julian, no matter what the consequences might be. "Okay," Lexi said finally, her voice barely above a whisper. "I'll take a chance on us." Julian's face lit up with a smile, and he pulled Lexi into his arms. "I promise you, Lexi," he said. "I'll do everything in my power to make us work." As Lexi looked into Julian's eyes, she knew that she had made the right decision. She knew that she had found her soulmate in Julian, and she was willing to fight for their love, no matter what.
