Chapter one - Ordinary life
Ellie's POV: Hello, my name is Ellie. I'm eighteen years old. My life is similar. I'm the only kid in the family. My parents planned to have more, but gave up on this idea. I might like it that way. I don't want all the attention on me, but I don't have to be a part-time babysitter. I will be a senior this year. People say this is the best year of high school, but I doubt it. I'm the so-called teacher's pet. Let's say that I wanted to make a great first impression. I stayed like that until today. I might have annoyed a few teachers. Most of the time, they work only with me. The fault that no one else wants to study is not mine. I'm doing my best job. At least my grades are good. I won't let anyone distract me. The diploma is not the most important thing, but it will help me get into a better university. I have a few targeted, but I don't know which one I'll choose. I have enough time to think about this. Mom keeps telling me I need to get off my shelf and do something different. I have friends, but we are not that close. Mostly, I talk with them only at school. I haven't found someone with who I am that close. I believe that it will happen after some time. Maybe I have to wait for that. Also, life doesn't end in high school. I hope that I can do everything I planned for this year. My last year in high school starts soon. I'm not excited about this. Let's say that I don't have plans outside of studying. That is the only priority I have. I don't want to get distracted, but it might happen. There is one boy who gets the attention of everyone. The problem is that no one can talk to him. We have three girls at school who are always around him. If other girls look at him, they are dead. I'm starting to think he does this for the attention. I don't know anything about him. My summer vacation almost ended. Today, I will go out and do something. First, I need to think about what it will be. I went to make myself something to eat. My parents should be at work. Later, I went out. I might walk around. There won't be a direction. I went to one of my favorite coffee shops. One of the workers knows me. I know when it's her turn to work. We always talk about the same things. This woman wants to know everything about me. I can call her my friend. - Hey, hey. You can give me the usual. - Alright. It's coming. Is there anything new? How are things with Hunter? - How should they be? We haven't talked. - Girl, make a move. - It's summer. I have no idea where he is. - Find him. I'm sure he has social media. - He does. This picture is from three days ago. - I said and pulled out my phone - I would've said he looked cute if I hadn't been married and that old. - You can still say it. I won't tell your husband. - Don't say this. My kids are almost your age. - How old were they? - My boy is almost sixteen. His birthday is in two months. - Great. - The girl will be thirteen. - Awesome. I can get them something. - There is no need for that. I always give my son money. I don't know what he likes anymore. - Understandable. I changed my taste. - Your taste hasn't changed. - It did. - Not when it comes to boys. I think you should talk with him. - I know, but it's not that easy. - Don't pay attention to these girls. Focus on him. - I don't believe there will be a change. - Because you haven't tried. I'm sure he will talk with you. I mean, you are funny and clever. - I'll agree only with the second one. My humor broke a long time ago. - That is not true. Your summer vacation is ending. Go and do something fun. - Like what? - Go out with friends. There are many people in the park. You can meet your Romeo there. - No, thanks. I prefer it if it doesn't happen when I'm sweating. - You think boys don't sweat. - They do. I have seen it. Too much. - I said, and she laughed - Here is your drink. Enjoy the good weather. It won't last long. - Thanks. I might come again tomorrow. - You're always welcome, but I won't be here. - Why? - I took a day off. Sorry. - When will you work? - After two days, I'm here. - In that case, I'll come in two days. I decided to finish my drink in a park. There is nothing better than enjoying the sun. I don't know how long it can last. Soon, I saw him. Hunter was there with the company. I won't say anything. I have no idea what to say. Our interests are not similar. It's not like I know what he likes. Everything is from what I see in school. That doesn't mean I can't watch him. If he had been alone, I would've done something. Nerdy Ellie won't do anything. She is a nerd. Right? They don't talk to good-looking boys. - Hey, nerdy Ellie. What are you doing here? Spying on Hunter? - Molly asked - I came here to drink. - Alcohol during summer. Interesting. - Do you even know me? Why are you here? I think you are the one spying on him. - Why would I? He likes me. - Yes, sure. That's why he is avoiding you all the time. - I said, chuckling - Watch your mouth, old lady? - Old? That means you are old, too. We are the same age. - He is mine. - I didn't say anything. - Eww. Molly, why are you talking with her? - Rebecca said - I'm leaving. I might get germs from her. - Your boyfriend left. - What? Great. It's your fault. - How exactly? - You were distracting me so he could leave. - You were the one who came here. - Whatever? I'm leaving. - Finally. - I said, and they left - Psst. Come here. - Hunt. - Shh. - What are you doing? - The moment I saw them, I left. - Why are you hiding? - Do you think I will stay out with these three? It's enough that I have to see them every day in school. - I thought you liked it. You have company every day. - I have friends to occupy me. What are you drinking? - You won't like it. We started walking around, avoiding the girls. The third minion came as well. I think Hunter's friends enjoy the girls more than him. It's a classic thing in every high school. For lunch, we went to a fast-food restaurant. I won't survive the next day if I eat that much food. Boys need more energy than girls. Well, at least from me. I should stop staring at him. I nodded my head and continued with my salad. It's better if I don't look at him. I still can't believe that we are here together. - Why aren't you eating? - I am. Not everyone eats as fast as you. - It's a habit. - I can tell. Is this your favorite food? - One of them. I eat everything. - I thought you cared about a healthy lifestyle. I mean, look at yourself. - I go to the gym every day after school. I can rest during the summer. - Lucky you. I can't motivate myself to exercise. P.E. is not my best subject. - It doesn't have to be. Being intelligent is more than enough. Don't you think? - Was that a compliment? - These are the facts. The whole school knows it. - Right. I'm sorry. - You can take it as a compliment if you want. I don't mind. - Thanks. You might be the only one who has said that. - Really? - Well, except for my parents, but I won't count that. - They always want what is best for us. - True. Where will you go after high school? - I don't know. I have some time to think about this. - You don't like to plan the future. - Why would I rush? I want to enjoy my last year in high school. What about you? - I have targeted some universities. I don't know which one I'll go to. - It looks like you have planned your entire future. - Not the entire one, but my university career. - Nice. I'm sure you will ace it. - We don't talk about high school. It won't be that easy there. - I'm sure you can do it. We kept talking for some time. I have so many questions, but I won't ask anything. Who knows if this will happen again? I'll enjoy the time we are here. We walked around the town the whole afternoon. I never thought I would talk with someone for so long. I should say that it was good. Honestly, I liked it a lot. He invited me for dinner, but I had to go home. I'll take it one at a time. I'm sure he did this because he was alone. With his friends, he is someone else. I wish he could be himself. It suits him better. - Look who decided to come home. It was about time. Dinner will get cold. - my dad said - It was sunny today. I decided to enjoy the weather. - For once, tell me you were with someone. - I like it when you are at work. - Don't worry. I'll start soon. Your mom and I have night shifts for three days next week. - Your patients can't wait for you to come. - Even doctors need a rest. - You are a surgeon. How often do they need you? - You have no idea. I might have done the operation, but I should check on my patients later. - I'm glad my mom is not one. - She is the best assistant I have ever had. - I'm a nurse, not your assistant. - But you make the best coffee. - I know what you like. Here is your dinner. Eat now. - Oh, it looks good. Thank you. - How was your day, Ellie? - Good. I didn't do much. - I said with the thought of Hunter - Did something happen? You have that look again. - What look? - The same as you have when you think about something. - Nothing happened. I got a drink and went to a park. Later, I went for food and walked around the town in the afternoon. - Alone? - Yes. - Then why did I see you after 3 pm on that boulevard? You weren't alone. - I won't fall for that. At that time, I was somewhere else. Nice try. - She is not little anymore. These tricks won't work on her. - my dad said - See? I'm too old for that. - We need to find something else for her. - I'm still here. The plan won't work. - Can't we rest a bit more? I liked that. - my mom said - I can go out tomorrow night. You two can have fun. - We'll see about that. My parents work a lot. They deserve a rest. Being a doctor, no matter which one, is hard enough. Their salaries are high, but I know what they are going through. No money can compensate for the hard work they do. Little kids say that their parents are superheroes. I can say the same about mine. Dad is saving lives every day. Many people would've died if it wasn't for him. Mom can give first aid to everyone. She is the best that can happen to you. If you need any help, she is the person for that. Dad fought a lot to make her his nurse. Many doctors wanted her. I hope that they will always be the best team.
