VAANI POV
Vani entered her new dorm building with her mother in tow. The two girls brought in Vani's suitcase and boxes of her things for her dorm. Her dad had come too, but since this was the girls' dorm, he couldn't come in. But he was happy to stay in the car, should his little girl change her mind and decide to go back home with him.
Vani, on the other hand, was nervous as she walked the halls of her building. It felt to her as if she was an alien among all these people who were staring at her.
"Oh God, why is everyone looking at me like this? Like I'm a thief, or a criminal?" Vani voiced her worries to her mom.
"Don't worry, Vani beta. Come on, you have to handle all this now. Otherwise, if your daddy sees you like this, he'll be sure to drive you straight back home!"
Vani'sp.o.v (Italics is Vani talking to herself in her mind)
It's been one month since my results came out and I apply to my favorite, Dehradun College. I got my admission in the mail, and now... now I'm standing in the girls' hostel as one of the wardens distributes our room keys.
"I know mom, I have to. Thank you," I say to my mom, thanking her for encouraging me to be strong.
UffVani! You can do it! And more than that, you HAVE to do it. Otherwise dad will take you back. Aurphirtohtumhari Dehradun College ki dream gayi! Be brave, Vani! Be brave!
But the girls, yaar! Why are they looking at me like I'm an alien? Kyun? I mean, why? I'm wearing a pair of blue jeans with my favorite, beautiful white top. Trust me, it's beautiful. And my hair is done right, in a perfect side braid. I look hot, man! What's their problem? In kya problem hai?!
Breathe, Vani, breath. Leave it, forget them. Let's concentrate on the hostel, yeah? Okay, it's my turn to collect the keys, and this warden has said my name three times already! Wonderful Vani! Not even the first day, and you're already on the warden's bad side. How do I know? Because she angrily thrust the keys into my hands and walked away.
"Hey! Room no. 308?" I look to the voice to see a girl in a pink crop top with black shorts jumping and waving towards me.
"Umm, yeah," is the only thing that comes out of my mouth as I see the no. 308 on my key.
"Oh that's great!" the girl grabbed my arm and pulled me with her without even waiting! Ajeeb!
"Come with me! By the way, I'm Neha, your new roomie."
Oh!
I drag my suitcase behind me and my mom is right behind us, half running to keep up with us. But, I can see that she's smiling.
Finally! I huff as we finally stop in front of our dorm. As Neha unlocked the door, mom came up next to us, smiling at my new roomie's openness.
We stepped inside and I put my suitcase and dumped my boxes on one of the beds. My arms hurt from carrying all that stuff, yaar!
I walked around a bit to check out my room, and mom announced she was going to check on dad.
Yeah, dad isn't here with me inside because 'Men Are Not Allowed'! I mean, what a stupid rule is this? After all, he's my dad! All he wanted to do was check out his daughter's hostel. Like, see if it was safe or not; if the have CCTV's or not; good, strong security guard or not? What if something happens? Then what'll they do? All these are normal tensions for any parent to take on for their daughter.
"Hey girl! Where are you lost?" Neha's loud voice snapped me out of my thoughts.
"Nothing," I say to her and put a smile on my face.
"Good, come on! I'll take you back to the lot, so that your mom can be tension free after going back."
Aww, she's a nice girl. I think I'll like her-
"And so she can handle your dad!" Neha nudged me and we both laughed as we left our room.
oOoOoOoOo
It's been four hours since mom and dad left here, and now Neha's helping me unload. After we said our goodbyes and my parents drove away, Neha showed me around the hostel. And then we had our dinner at a hotel. Wasn't fancy, because you know. College students aren't filthy rich.
Neha is such a fun loving girl, she can easily adjust to anywhere, like right now. But here I am, already missing my mom and dad. Neha chatted away with my parents like if they were her own and I am the stranger. My parents are happy that I'm with good company here. Now they don't have to worry about me.
But trust me, I'm so tired today from all the moving, I'm going to bed now, at 11:45. See, I'm a good beti, my parents have no tension from me.
