..vaani ..
It's a brand new day, and my first day of college life, my first day without maa and papa. I woke up at 6a.m, stretching my arms as I opened the curtains, letting the warm sunlight wake me up. I turned back towards the room and saw Nisha still sleeping on her stomach; aww, she looked like a puppy! Her mouth was hanging open, and both her hands were above her head while her legs were in different contortions, one leg near her stomach, the other hung off the bed.
I smiled at shook my head at my new roommate as I went to the closet to pick out my outfit for the day. I grabbed a fresh new pair of black jeans and an orange top from my and went to the washroom. By the 1-hour mark, I was done with my daily routine: teeth brushed, face washed and make upped, and I was looking fresh in my new outfit. I walked out after one hour, and Nisha's still sleeping, though this time on her back.
Nisha finally woke when I was doing my puja, slowly opening her eyes and rubbing them with back of her palm.
"Morning, Nisha! Go wash up and join me," I said as I paused in my own prayer, but she was looking at me like I'd grown two heads. My roommate didn't move, staring at me as she sat on her bed, her hands folded in her legs. After completing my prayer, I went to her and gave her Prasad, which she groggily accepted, still half asleep. She extended her left hand to me, but I slapped her hand away, which woke her up.
"Ouch!" Nisha whined as she rubbed her hand.
"What are you doing?" I half yelled, irritated with her.
"What?" she moodily exclaimed, "I'm taking this, your so called Prasad!"
I'd had it.
"First of all, this is God's blessing! And second, always take Prasad with your right hand!" I yelled back, pressing the sweet in her right hand.
Nisha gave me a confused look that personified the confused emoji.
"Why??" She whined, but then calmed."Actually whatever," she moped as she swung her legs off the bed.
"He is nothing, no one." She mumbled as her head hung between her legs."He can't do anything; he can't bless anyone."
"Leave it," she waved her hand, brushing me off."Are you ready?" Nisha asked me as she made herself breakfast already.
Her sudden change of behavior confused the hell out of me, but I nodded my head at her with an exaggerated smile.
"Good," Nisha replied with a fake smile of her own. "We'll go out today."
"Can I ask you something?" I said, putting the puja tray away in it's proper place. Nisha nodded a yes as she ate her toast.
I sat down in front of her, and calmed myself down.
"You don't believe in god. May I ask why?" I said in a motherly tone.
"Because they are just stones," Nisha nonchalantly said as she chewed,"and I can't believe in stone. They can't do anything."
Her reply shocked me to my core.
"But why?" I whined at her in defense of my god,"And please don't say like this about god"
"You know why, Vaani." with this small line she left the room and went to the bathroom.
"Oh yeah." I mumbled to myself as a mentally stabbed myself for being so reckless.
Nisha'd told me how her mom and dad had died in car accident when she was 10 years old, and her uncle and aunt denied to take her with them. After her parents, it was her dad's best friend who took her to his home and raised her with his own family.
Nisha startled me as she quietly walked out of the bathroom, washed and fresh in new clothes.
"Hey Vaani, let's go! I'll introduce you to my friends today..."
Nisha kept on talking but Vaani didn't hear a word, lost in thought.
"Hey! Earth to Vaani! Where's your head?" She snapped her fingers in front of my eyes, bringing me back.
I shook my head clear, "Nowhere. W-What were you saying?" I stammered at her.
Nisha rolled her eyes at me.
"I was saying, that today I'm gonna introduce you to my friends"
"Oh, okay." I said, getting off my chair and ready to go.
"Hold up, just give me five minutes, I'll be ready."

By 8:30, we were in the garden, where we were going to meet Nisha's friends. At 7:10, she said to give her five minutes to get ready. It took her 50 minutes to do her make up and make her hair flawless.
Anyways, thankfully we were in the garden now. There were a lot of people out already; a few students were walking around in their "squads", talking and laughing; some boys were playing games and a couple of kids were sitting huddled on the grass. As we walked further into the park, Nisha started looking out for someone, and then my eyes stopped on a group of boys who were playing basketball. All of them were very tall and perfectly built. They were playing the game so well, I wanted to join them. I liked watching basketball but I never came to play. I especially liked one of the boys from all of them; he was playing the game so good, no one could stop him from throwing baskets.
I was lost in my day dream when Nisha screamed.
"Oye! Vaani, this is Kabir," she whispered to me then yelled out his name as she ran, "Kabir!"
I watched where she was going, and to my amazement she headed towards the boys playing basketball. Her friend Kabir was one of them.
Nisha shouted at them again but they were so engrossed in their sport that no one heard her. She dragged me by my hand and now we were standing quite close to the boys, close enough that a ball could hit us any moment.
"Mr. Kabir. Malhotra" she gritted through her teeth in such a scolding voice that now everyone stopped to look at us.

As Vaani was distracted trying to calm her friend down, she didn't see the basketball flying fast towards her. The hard ball would have hit her bad if someone hadn't grabbed her hand and jerked her out of the way, though they both lost balance and tumbled to the ground. The ground didn't hurt her; she'd landed on the boy who'd saved her. Vaani looked up and saw everyone looking at her, and she looked under her to see the boy staring at her, bewildered.
"You okay, madam?" the boy asked her and she closed her eyes in embarrassment.
Vaani opened her eyes slowly and a shiver ran through her spine. She felt nervous, being this close to a boy, hell, he was pinned under her, and he was staring at without blinking an eye as everyone watched them, whispering. Oh god was she so embarrassed!
"Vaan! Are you ok?" Nisha finally came and helped her up, examining her like a worried mother.
The boy she'd fallen pushed himself up on his feet and brushed his clothes clean.
"Y-y-yeah, I'm fine," Vaani staggered out of breath.
"Yeah, woh theek hai." The boy sarcastically said.
Nisha leaped at him, throwing her arms around his neck.
"Oh Kabir, Yaar!"
Vaani gawked at them; this was Kabir?!
Kabir struggled to pry her hands off him.
"Nishu! Chor na yaar! Saans torre gi, kiya?" he laughed.
Nisha let go, only to pinch his cheeks. "Aww, my chotu!" she teased.
Kabir swatted her hand off. "Nishu buss kar! And don't call me chotu!" he whined.
"Kiyun! Mein bulaun gi, chotu, chotu, chotu! Problem?" Nisha rebelled.
"Okay, as you wish. Phir main bhi tumhain nickname se bulaun?"
Nisha gaped. "Don't you dare!" she pointed a finger at him.
"Kiyun, kiyun! Main toh..."
Before he could continue, Nisha leaped at him, wrapping her fingers around his neck, wrestling him to the ground.
Vaani couldn't contain her laughed and fell to the ground laughing. She closed her eyes, crying tears laughing, and when she opened, both Nisha and Kabir were standing over her. She put on a straight face and pulled herself up.
"Sorry!" she snorted and the other two laughed at her.
"Anyway, Kabir," Nisha slapped a hand on his shoulder, "this is my new friend and my roommate, Vaani."
"Hey, Vaani! Nice to meet you!" Kabir flashed her a boyish smile and extended a hand.
"Hi," Vaani confidently replied, shaking his hand.
