Chapter Five

975 Words
Audrey's P.O.V.   "Aunt Gwen?" I called out for her. I had already checked her room in the castle and she wasn't there. Neither was uncle Alexander. Now I was looking in her workshop.   Aunt Gwen was notorious for her potion making skills and incantations. Apparently on our dad’s side, we have witch blood in our ancestry.   Aunt Gwen had said the powers began skipping generations when pure witches began going extinct. With no pure witches to mix with, the powers were weakened in the family blood lines.   She had told me a few times how it was the only way the moon goddess would interfere to ensure only the deserving wolves would receive such extraordinary gifts.   She has taught me how to make a few potions but I have no powers to use her spells.   "Here darling," I heard her soft mumble from a back room. I knew exactly where she was, in her potions room.   "Aunt Gwen tell me you have some potions ready for me. I haven't any time and we need to leave as soon as possible." I informed her.   "I know dear. You aren't the only one who gets signs from the moon goddess," she replied with a knowing smile.   "There by the door is a bag I've prepared for you. A months worth of scent hiding potions, identification for you and your sisters. A map of the territory and a couple hundred dollars for the road."   Just as she said everything was there.   "But Aunt Gwen this is $800 I can't take this," I said feeling guilty knowing this was everything she had saved over the years that she didn't have to turn over to our mother.   "You can and you will," she told me sternly, "Here this is a book of potions I've written up for you. Some you already know, the others you will need to learn and make sure you do it carefully."   She began pushing me out of her shop, "Gather your sisters and leave at once."   I was quick to heed her warning and hurried back inside the castle. I reached my room and stuffed a bag with all the lady essentials I'd need as well as a few pairs of clothes, a flashlight, a first aid kit, and a survivors kit equipped with survival knives, flint and stone, ect.   After I had all my stuff, I made it to Edith's room to see them as well as Anita waiting on me. I let out a warning growl to her.   She raised her hands in surrender, "I only mean to help. I'm dead whether I assist you or not. Take the servants hall through the castle to get out unseen. Your mother is currently on a run, you've got about an hour left before she comes back. She was really angry when she left, she always runs a while when she's that angry. Follow the map Mistress Gwen gave you. It's marked with safe paths out of the territory and hiding spots to shelter you at night. Quickly, take the scent potions before you go."   I handed Erma and Edith a potion before drinking one myself. I handed a few to Anita as well, "Humans move slower than wolves but this will give you an edge."   She attempted to thank me but I just walked away with my sisters. If giving her a chance to save herself was all I could do to help her then I would.   We followed her instructions and took the servants hall out. It let out right at the woods. I knew if I shifted we'd be faster and I could protect my sisters better.   Even if the pack was small, there were other creatures that inhabited the woods. As well as some nomad humans that were able to escape my mother's tyranny.   Unfortunately they had armed themselves with weapons to harm and kill werewolves as self defense. They won't trust any wolf easily and it'd be best to avoid them.   As I shifted Edith took the map out and checked her watch to see the time, "It'll be lunch time soon sis, the pack will be in the castle. I dunno if mom will expect us to be there after everything but if she does she'll start looking for us as soon as she's back."   Edith was right, we had to leave and fast. I let them climb on my back and took off into the trees, always smelling the air to know if we were getting too close to any wildlife, creatures or humans. If we did I'd have to change course or risk fighting with my sisters close by.   We had run for hours but it still wasn't night yet and though I was tired I wouldn't rest until we were as far away from the castle as possible. According to Edith we weren’t even close to a safe place anyway.   I felt like I had been running an eternity already. No offense to my sisters but running all day with them on my back was taking a toll. I needed to rest and soon if we were gonna be able to go any further. I spotted a secluded cave up ahead.   "Aunt Gwen didn't mark this cave on the map are you sure we should stay here?" Edith questioned me.   I mindlinked her 'I'm tired and so hungry I have to hunt and at least get a little rest or we won't make it much further. We won't be here long I promise' I assured her the best I could.   I instructed them to stay put in the back of the cave and take another scent hiding potion as they only last about 18-22 hours give or take a few hours depending on how each person's metabolism absorbs the potion, and wolves have a very high metabolism.   So for us the potion would probably only last 12 hours at the most and though I couldn't smell them yet I wasn't going to take a chance.
