Chapter 2
“Why don't you send someone else? Do you really have to go?” I pleaded with Elliot once more as he dragged his suitcase outside the duplex where we stayed.
“You know how important work is; I need to leave. Dad is here and he'll take care of you,” he said, motioning to his father. “Right, Dad?”
His dad nodded and stepped inside.
“Don't worry, Lyra. I'll take care of you and make sure you lack nothing,” he said as he placed his hand around my shoulders and pulled me close.
Elliot was too stupid and blind with work to understand what his dad actually meant by those words.
“Thanks, Dad,” he said as he kissed me on the cheek. “See you in a week.” He got into the car and drove out.
“It's just us now,” Kevin said as he dropped his hand to my waist. Elliot’s back was turned to us
