Chapter1
Sign it… or watch him die.” Ophelia’s fingers froze above the paper. For a moment, she couldn’t breathe. The words echoed in her head, sharp and unforgiving, like they were meant to break something inside her. Slowly, she lifted her gaze. Adrian Lopez stood across from her, calm and composed, as if he had not just placed her entire life on the edge of a knife. There was no emotion in his eyes no hesitation. Just quiet control as he watched her hand shaking while holding the pen. She swallowed hard. “I don’t understand,” she said, her voice barely steady. “You said you would help my father?” she asked, curiosity shining in her eyes. “I will,” Adrian replied without missing a beat, his tone flat, controlling, and certain. “But nothing in this world is free.” Her chest tightened. Her eyes dropped back to the document on the table. It looked simple just a few pages, neatly printed, waiting for her signature. But she knew better. Nothing about this moment was simple. Her future was in that document. “What exactly do you want from me?” she asked, forcing herself to look at him again. His gaze locked onto hers. “You,” he said. Her breath seized. “What does that mean?” she asked, almost trembling. He stepped closer, his presence overwhelming without effort. “It means you stay with me. You live under my roof, work for me, and follow my rules.” A chill ran down her spine. “You don’t leave unless I say so.” Her grip on the edge of the table tightened. “That sounds like a prison,” she muttered. “It’s a contract,” he said calmly. “No,” she shook her head, taking a small step back. “It’s control,” he continued. “And your father’s life is on the other side of that control.” Silence felt heavy and suffocating. Her mind raced, but it kept going back to the same place her father lying weakly in that hospital bed, machines doing what his body could no longer do. We need payment before we proceed, the doctor’s voice echoed in her head. Her hands began to tremble. “You’re asking me to give up my freedom,” she whispered. “I’m offering you a choice,” Adrian replied, serious and steady. A bitter laugh almost escaped her lips. “A choice?” she repeated. “This isn’t a choice.” “It is,” Adrian said calmly. “You can walk away if you want.” Her heart pounded painfully. “Walk away and lose the only person I have left?” Her throat tightened. “You’re cruel,” she told him fiercely. “No,” he said, pride in his tone. “I’m realistic.” Her chest rose and fell unevenly. “Why me?” she asked suddenly. “There are so many people in this city. Why me?” For a brief second, something flickered in his eyes. But it vanished before she could understand it. “Because I chose you, and this was always going to happen.” “That answer doesn’t make sense. It only makes things worse.” “I don’t even know you,” she said quietly. “You don’t need to. That’s exactly why I chose you.” Her voice rose despite herself. “You’re asking me to give up everything for someone I don’t even know!” “And yet,” he said calmly, “you came here. I did not bring you.” The words hit her hard it was true. She came to him. She asked for help. She just didn’t expect this to be the cost. “I thought…” her voice cracked slightly. “I thought you would help.” “I am helping. Can’t you see?” he replied. “By owning me?” Her gaze sharpened. “I don’t own you.” “Then what is this?” “A transaction.” Her chest tightened painfully. She hated how calm he was, hated how easily he said it, hated how little this seemed to affect him. “Say no,” he suddenly said. “What?” “Say no,” he repeated. “Walk out of this office. Go back to the hospital. See what happens.” Her heart stopped. He stepped closer, his voice dropping slightly. “Go ahead. Prove to me you don’t need this.” She couldn’t breathe. He knew. He knew she couldn’t walk away. Her father didn’t have time. She had no options. And he knew it. Tears burned behind her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. “I hate you,” she whispered. Something unreadable crossed his face. “You will,” he said quietly. At first. Her hands clenched into fists. “You’re unbelievable.” And yet, he gestured toward the paper. “You’re still here.” Silence followed. Longer this time. Heavier. Her mind screamed at her to stop. To think. To run. But her heart already knew the truth. She had no real choice. Not when the only person she loved was dying. Slowly, her gaze dropped back to the paper. The contract. Her freedom. Her future. All reduced to ink and a signature. “If I sign this…” she began carefully, “you’ll pay for everything?” “Yes.” “No delays?” “No.” “No excuses?” “No.” She swallowed hard. “And he’ll live?” Adrian didn’t answer immediately. That scared her. “Adrian,” she said, her voice trembling now. “I need you to answer me.” His eyes met hers. “I’ll give him the best treatment money can buy.” It wasn’t the answer she wanted but it was the only one she was going to get. Her hand trembled as she picked up the pen. This was it. The moment everything changed. Her old life, her freedom… gone. She paused just for a second. “Once I sign this… there’s no going back, right?” “No,” he replied. Her heart broke quietly. She nodded. Then… she signed. The sound of the pen moving across the paper felt louder than anything else in the room. When she finished, her hand dropped weakly. It was done. She had just sold her freedomfor him, for her father, for survival. Adrian took the document from her without a word. His eyes scanned it quickly before giving a small nod. “It’s done,” she felt empty. “Now what?” she asked softly. “You move in today.” “Today?” “Yes.” “I need to go to the hospital first.” “You will,” he said. “My driver will take you.” “Everything is happening too fast. I need to pack my things.” “You won’t need them.” “What does that mean?” “It means everything you need will be provided.” Her chest tightened again. “Everything except my freedom,” she muttered. He didn’t respond. He turned slightly, as if the conversation was already over like she was already just part of his world. “Wait,” she said quickly. He stopped. But he didn’t turn immediately
