Chapter 1
I wiped the scrape on my knees as quickly as possible. I then looked for another piece of cloth that I could use to wipe off the mud all over my body. I just realized that there's mud on my clothes too. I don't want to get scolded by Nana. I look at the clock, there is still time. I was about to turn and run back up to my room but then stopped because I saw Otto was still outside playing with Olaf. I opened the window and called him inside. He just looks at me and then proceeds to continue playing with Olaf. He never listens to me, so I ran back to my room. I take off all my clothes and head to the shower. I clean myself as quickly as possible. I then get out and dress myself in clean clothes. I fix my hair and look at myself in the mirror, I think I look presentable. Maybe I should tie my hair in a ponytail. I quickly tie my hair and proceed to pick up my muddy clothes. Larnie is going to scold me because the other day she also had to wash mine and Otto's muddy clothes. Well, we couldn't help it because Otto and I enjoy playing football in the mud. Last time, Otto and I tried to wash our own muddy clothes but we ended up making a mess, so Larnie had to wash the clothes and clean up after us. Ron, the gardener, also isn't happy when we play in the garden, especially after it rains. He says we are ruining the ground. He and Larnie tried to intervene every time we headed out to play but eventually they gave up. I headed down to the laundry room and put my muddy clothes in the basket as Larnie instructed last time. I then headed back up and looked for Otto. He is nowhere to be seen. I headed to the kitchen and saw muddy pawprints on the floor. Otto must have let Olaf in. I call for Olaf and then I hear him bark from the other room. I follow the sound of his bark and see Olaf all covered in mud lying in his bed with Otto still nowhere to be seen. I then held Olaf's collar and took him outside. I called for Don, he quickly ran to me. He must had come from the garage because he was still holding the sponge he uses to wipe the car. "What do you need, kid?" "Can you please wash Olaf when you have time?" "Will do." I quickly thanked him and handed over Olaf. I then ran back inside and yelled Otto's name. Still no answer, I wonder where he is. I headed on to the living room and looked for my piece. Nana must have hidden it somewhere because I couldn't find it. She does not like it when I continue to glance at my notes while playing. She wants me to play it by heart, that means letting the emotion move my fingers on the piano. I take my seat and proceed to play on the piano. I am currently practicing Jeu Te Veux. My Nana says I have nearly mastered it, I just need to practice some more. As I finish the piece, I see my Nana standing by the door. She must have been standing there since I started playing. She gives me a smile, she must be happy with my performance. I smile at her back and then she waves her hand urging me to continue on. I then play Chopin's Waltz No. 6 in D-Flat Major. I know how much this makes my Nana proud that her great-granddaughter, barely eleven years old, can already master this. My Nana taught me how to play the piano when I was three. Ever since she taught me every day, I have never missed a day. I head to her house after school, after track practice, even when I'm tired, I must practice. I enjoy playing piano but I like it even more because I get to spend time with my Nana. She has always been in charge when it comes to me playing piano. She plays the piano herself. She too started playing the piano at a young age. She went to the Royal Academy of Music in London. She hopes that I will continue to play even when I am older. I continue to play the other pieces I am working on. The others I could not quite master and memorize the notes. Nana sits on the sofa in front of me. She closes her eyes and is listening very intently. Every time I make a mistake, she flinches. I try again and again. She is still closing her eyes and continues listening to me playing. She stands up and sits next to me. She starts playing Chopin's Berceuse in D-Flat Major correctly. I could not quite remember the other notes so I observe intently. After she plays, she asks me what I want for my birthday since it is coming up next month. I think hard and I remember for Otto's birthday a few months ago he asked for eleven new pairs of socks since he was turning eleven. Maybe I should ask for eleven things since I am turning eleven. I think I know now! I'll ask for eleven packs of chocolate. I happily tell Nana what I want. Nana gives me a smile and tells me to continue playing. I play more for another hour, then Nana tells me to take a break. We headed on to the kitchen to have a snack. Lo and behold, Otto was there reheating pizza. He was still in his muddy football jersey eagerly waiting for his pizza. He hadn't noticed that Nana and I were standing by the door. Nana calls Otto, he slowly turns to our direction. He gives Nana a big smile and asks her if she would like some. Nana glares at him and tells him to go wash up quickly. He obeys and quickly heads out of the kitchen. Nana calls Larnie and instructs her to take the pizza out and put it on a plate, then leave it on the table. Nana then opens the freezer and takes out ice cream. She gets two bowls, places ice cream in each, drizzles chocolate syrup and adds sprinkles on the other bowl. She gives the one with sprinkles to me and she takes the one without. We then proceeded to eat our ice cream. She then asks me if Otto and I would come with her to the golf course tomorrow morning. She said we might be bored going with her every morning and would rather do some other activities. I told her Otto and I would come and that we both enjoyed coming with her. Nana calls for Otto and tells him to start practicing his viola or else she will take his football away. I chuckle next to her. Otto, that's what you got for ignoring me earlier. I finish my ice cream and place my bowl in the sink. Ahhh summer is great.
