The Strings That Bind
Chapter 1
The dream always started the same way.
Darkness. Thick and suffocating, pressing against her skin like silk and smoke. Elara couldn't see, couldn't move, couldn't breathe. But she could feel.
Hands. Everywhere. Gliding over her skin with a possessive intimacy that made her skin prickle and her breath catch. Fingers tracing the curve of her neck, the slope of her shoulder, the dip of her waist. Lips trailing down her spine, leaving trails of fire in their wake.
She wanted to push them away. She should push them away.
But her body betrayed her.
A gasp escaped her lips as those phantom hands gripped her hips, pulling her back against a solid chest. She could feel the heat of him, the hardness of him, the power radiating from every inch of his body. His breath was hot against her ear, his voice a dark whisper that sent shivers down her spine.
"You can't escape me," he murmured. "You belong to me. You've always belonged to me."
His fingers slid beneath the waistband of her shorts, and she arched against him, a moan escaping her lips. She hated herself for the sound, hated the way her body responded to his touch, but she couldn't stop. Couldn't resist. Couldn't do anything but surrender to the overwhelming need building inside her.
"You want this," he continued, his voice a dark caress. "You've always wanted this. You're just too afraid to admit it."
His hand moved lower, and she gasped, her hips bucking against his touch. He chuckled, a dark, knowing sound that made her burn with shame and desire.
"That's it, puppet. Let go. Give yourself to me."
Her body was trembling, on the edge of something vast and terrifying. She could feel herself falling, could feel the darkness closing in around her, could feel him taking control of everything
Elara's eyes flew open.
She was alone. In her bed. In her cramped apartment, with the peeling wallpaper and the water stain on the ceiling. Her body was trembling, her skin flushed, her heart hammering against her ribs.
And between her thighs, she was aching.
Her face flushed crimson. The dream had been too vivid. She could still feel those hands on her, that voice in her ear, that overwhelming sense of being claimed. Possessed. Owned.
She pressed her thighs together, trying to ease the ache. It didn't help. The longing was too deep, too primal. Her body craved something it had been denied for years. Something she'd sworn she would never need again.
Elara Vance was a single mother. She had a six-year-old son named Leo. She had a mother with dementia who barely recognized her anymore. She worked two jobs and hadn't slept through the night in months. She was drowning in debt and drowning in exhaustion.
And she was drowning in desire she didn't want to feel.
Chapter 2
She was still trembling when she swung her legs over the side of the bed. Her body felt foreign to her, this traitorous vessel that craved things she'd sworn she would never need. Men. Touch. The illusion of safety in someone else's arms.
She knew better. She'd learned the hard way that men were not to be trusted. Mark had taught her that lesson with brutal efficiency.
She'd been twenty-three when she met him. Young and naive and desperate for love. He'd swept her off her feet with his charm, his attention, his promises of forever. And then the mask had slipped, and she'd seen the monster underneath.
The bruises. The broken bones. The terror of never knowing what would set him off. The night she'd finally escaped, bleeding and broken, clutching her newborn son to her chest.
She'd sworn then. Sworn she would never let another man close enough to hurt her. Sworn she would protect Leo and herself at any cost.
But her body didn't care about her promises. Her body remembered the touch, the heat, the feeling of being wanted. And in the dark of night, when her defenses were down, her body betrayed her.
She padded barefoot down the hallway, checking on Leo first. He was sleeping peacefully, his small face relaxed, his Star Wars blanket tucked around him. She watched him for a long moment, her heart swelling with love.
He was the reason she kept going. The reason she worked two jobs and slept four hours a night and never, ever gave up. He was her whole world.
She closed his door softly and continued to the kitchen, filling the kettle with water and setting it to boil. The clock on the microwave read 5:47 AM. She had an hour before she had to wake Leo for school.
Her phone buzzed on the counter. She picked it up, expecting a text from Davina or a notification from the nursing home.
Instead, it was a message from an unknown number.
Good morning, puppet. Sleep well?
Elara's blood ran cold. Puppet. The same name that had been appearing in her dreams, in her nightmares, in the shadows that haunted her every waking moment.
She stared at the screen, her hands trembling. How did this person know about her dreams? How did they know about the darkness that consumed her every night?
She typed back, her fingers shaking.
Who is this?
The response was immediate.
You know who I am. You've always known. I'm the one who watches you. The one who touches you when you close your eyes. The one who makes you feel things you're too afraid to admit.
I'm the one who owns you.
Elara's throat tightened. She wanted to throw the phone across the room, to deny the truth of those words. But she couldn't. Because somewhere deep in her heart, she knew it was true.
She was being watched. Haunted. Controlled by someone who knew her better than she knew herself.
I don't belong to anyone, she typed back, her fingers flying across the screen.
Don't you? Then why do you arch your back when I touch you in your dreams? Why do you moan my name when you think no one's listening?
I know you, puppet. Better than you know yourself.
And I know what you need.
Chapter 3
She didn't respond. Couldn't. The words were too close to the truth, too intimate, too damning.
She poured her tea and sat at the kitchen table, staring at the wall. Her mother's medication sat in a neat row by the sink. The stack of unpaid bills was growing taller. The photograph of her and Leo at his fourth birthday party was propped against the salt shaker, his gap-toothed smile a reminder of everything she was fighting for.
She couldn't fall apart. She couldn't. She had people depending on her.
Her mother's door creaked open. Margaret Vance shuffled out, her silver hair tangled, her eyes unfocused and wild. She was wearing the same nightgown she'd worn for three days, the floral pattern faded and torn.
"Elara?" Her voice was small, confused. "Is that you?"
Elara stood, crossing to her mother's side. "Yes, Mom. It's me. Are you okay? Did you have a bad dream?"
Margaret looked at her, her eyes swimming with confusion. "I don't know. I was... I was looking for something. I can't remember what."
"It's okay. You're safe. Let me make you some tea."
"Elara." Margaret's grip on her arm was suddenly fierce. "Something's wrong. I can feel it. There's something in the shadows. Something watching us."
Elara's skin prickled. "What are you talking about?"
"I don't know." Margaret shook her head, frustration flickering across her face. "I don't remember. But I feel it. I feel..."
She broke off, her eyes widening. "You're in danger, Elara. Someone is coming for you. I can feel it. I can feel them."
Elara's throat tightened. "It's okay, Mom. No one's coming for me. You're just confused. The disease is making you see things that aren't there."
Margaret's grip tightened. "The disease isn't making me see anything. I see clearly now. Clearer than I have in years."
She looked at Elara, her eyes sharp and focused in a way they hadn't been in months. "There's a man. A powerful man. He's watching you. He wants to take you. He wants to own you."
Elara's blood turned to ice. "How do you know that?"
"I just know. I see it in your dreams. I see it in the shadows. He's been pulling strings for a long time, Elara. Longer than you know."
"Pulling strings?" Elara's heart pounded. "What are you talking about?"
Margaret's eyes flickered with something that might have been fear. "The puppet master. He's the one who controls everything. He's the one who's been watching you."
She leaned in close, her breath hot against Elara's ear. "He's the one who's been in your dreams. The one who's been touching you in the dark. He's been preparing you for something, Elara. Something big."
Elara pulled back, her heart racing. "What are you talking about? Who is he? How do you know this?"
But Margaret's eyes had already clouded over, the moment of clarity passing as quickly as it had come. She looked at Elara with confusion, her grip loosening.
"Elara? Where are we? I don't recognize this place."
Elara's throat tightened. "It's okay, Mom. We're home. Let's get you back to bed."
She led her mother back to her room, tucking her into bed as she'd done a thousand times before. But her mind was racing.
The puppet master. The man in her dreams. The one who claimed to own her.
It couldn't be real. It was impossible. She was just exhausted, her mind playing tricks on her. Her mother was just confused.
But as she closed her mother's door and stood alone in the hallway, Elara couldn't shake the feeling that she was being watched.
That someone was pulling strings she couldn't see.
That she was already caught on their web.
