Chapter 9

1212 Words
Kevin I feel so stupid making that sudden of a move on her. Knowing her mental state and her condition, I should have taken into consideration that she wasn’t ready for that. But I love her so very much and I thought it was time to make her aware. “She’s not our mate Kevin.” My wolf Kai said in my mind. “I know, but I love her and, at this point, I don’t believe the Moon Goddess has given us a mate.” I replied. “From what I know about the Moon Goddess, it is never our time, it is usually her time and she’s never late.” I sighed. I know he’s right but, when you’re almost 30 and not having a mate, it starts to hit you that you’re alone and that your want for a family starts to begin slipping from your grasp. I already denounce my position in my family. Being born in a Beta family, normally you continue with the customs and positions, but I did not want that life. I was next in line to become my cousin’s Beta, but I gave him the bad news that I was not going to fill in that spot. I needed some soul-searching to find myself. He understood especially after the incident he faced. I drove up to the Clear Lake pack and went inside my house, which is on the outskirts of our territory. I stay close so I can keep an eye on my family. I was not a part of the pack’s politics but, I was still respected. I really have no business working at a run-down diner. It was just something I wanted to experience because I hear of students in college having low-level jobs to keep up with the expenses of school and life. Truthfully, I have my master’s degree in business since I, was going to work with my cousin and be his right hand with everything, but I didn’t want to be that it was more forced upon me. When working in the diner, there wasn’t anything special, it wasn’t until Davina started. She was beautiful from the start. With her thick dark hair, those dark eyes that have so much mystery, I wanted to find out what she hid from everyone, being that she looked so timid and afraid most of the time. She was small but not tiny, but me being already over 6ft, I knew I always looked like I was giant. She was curvy and I always get lost when tracing her with my eyes. Lost in thought, I did not even realize that my cousin Evan had walked into my house. “Oh s**t! Could mind link me to let me know you were coming?” startled by him. “Sorry, I didn’t really think of it,” Evan said. You can tell he was exhausted, dealing with Alpha duties, meeting with other pack Alphas to keep the peace, investment meetings, business obligations. It really started to take its toll but, I know he drowns himself to keep him from thinking. “How are you feeling?” I asked. “Nothing in particular. I’m living so that’s going to show I’m good.” “Evan, you know you can talk with me. I may have left my position, but it doesn’t mean I can’t support you in some way.” “What’s the point? Exactly what you said, you left your position because you needed some time for you. I am not angry at that, but I don’t understand what you’re looking for. I mean a diner really? You come from the biggest pack in the western world and our families are from wealth. What exactly could you see from a diner that is more important than your lineage?” “It’s not a what, it’s a whom,” I responded. “Did you find your mate?” He asked, shocked. “No…I don’t believe she’s my mate but, I can’t explain it. Her scent is…off.” “What do you mean?” “Okay, well, rogues have a particular scent that allows us to know. Same with witches, vampires, mates, and even humans, right?” He nodded “Well, with her there is no scent. Like I can’t pick anything up from her.” He furrowed his brows “What do you mean she has no scent? Is that even possible? What is she?” “That’s the thing. I don’t know what she is. Kai has even tried his abilities to figure out what she might be but, we can’t trace anything on her.” Evan began to loosen his tie like I just added another stress on his lap. When things begin to have some sort of threat that could affect all worlds, I know he tries all he can to prepare for what could happen. He ran his fingers through his copper-brown hair like he was trying to calm himself. He finally put his gaze at me, looking into his green, emerald eyes. I had noticed that he hadn’t really gotten a haircut or had his beard trimmed in a while. “Welp, I have to get back to the packhouse and review some application investments for colleges that are wanting us to partner with them and possibly expand.” He said to have a way of getting out of conversation. “What colleges are you looking into?” “I have some universities, some community colleges, and I have seen this trade school come up. I remember when Miranda was thinking about doing some outsourcing program for members in the pack that were looking into getting some career education. It could be a way for them to have something productive rather than doing the normal customs of serving royals.” My eyes widened. He has not spoken about her since she passed away. I wonder what brought this about. “So, you were looking into continuing her vision?” I kept him talking because I believe he is now becoming alive again. I saw a glimmer of spark in his eyes that I had not seen in many years. “Um…. Yeah, I thought about finishing her work since I know she was so passionate about making that change and breaking the old custom of bounding our people with those rules and statues. She believed that we are in control of our own destinies, not ones that are made based on old visions and restrictions.” I smiled because I was now beginning to see that old Evan I once knew and I was sure this would be a great way of bringing positivity back to the pack, since I have felt like we were constantly in this dark gloomy cloud ever since that day. “When do you meet with them?” “Well, tomorrow I start at a community college. Then I am going to make my way up the state to get to the other universities and I was going to visit TEC college lastly since I will be heading home and it’s near.” TEC? That’s where Davina begins tomorrow. Oh, how things work in the universe will always continue to blow me away.
