Cassie sat on the fire escape outside her apartment, a cigarette dangling between her fingers. She wasn’t much of a smoker, but tonight, the burn in her lungs felt better than the knot in her chest. Elisia was gone. And Emmett— She glanced at her phone. No texts. No calls. They hadn’t spoken since that night at the bar. She should’ve checked in on him. Should’ve made sure he wasn’t drinking himself into oblivion or picking fights with the wrong people. But something about that conversation had left her unsettled. Emmett wasn’t just mad that Elisia left. He was unraveling. A knock on the window behind her made her jump.
