Chapter Four: Epic Flop

2802 Words
Five days after the visiting nurse had been to their home Olivia and Brian received a large package in the mail. Brian could see his wife carrying in the mail from the mailbox with a huge smile upon her face. “s**t, it’s here,” Brian recalled under his breath as he tried to make his way into the other room. He’s trying to avoid me. I’m not letting him! Maybe it’s not what I think it is. Maybe she received something she ordered instead. That could be too, he tried to rationalize. “Um, Love!” She hollered! “Yes,” he stopped short and turned around. “Can’t you wait? I have some..um, news to share!” Brian sighed. He didn’t wait to wait. He didn’t want to know what was in the envelope. He wanted but to sit down and relax. Olivia’s face glowed even more as she got closer to her husband and held up the package. It was heavy and she knew that it contained all of the information that they needed to make an executive cut from the four ladies that they narrowed the search down by, solely based on health screenings. Some may feel that health screenings are unethical. But Sperm Banks and Fertility clinics use them all of the time, so they must be doing something right, Olivia felt deep down. To Olivia, it almost felt like she was playing god in this scenario. She had so much power in her hand at that moment as gracefully tore through the packaging and began pawing through the large Manila envelope before she could even make it to the table where she and Brian had been chatting before the mail delivery. "Are you ready for this," Olivia asked her husband, holding the now opened package up high for him to see? She was more than ready. Waiting this long had been excruciating for Olivia. She just wanted answers and she wanted them now! Brian gripped the edge of the table and hesitated responding to the words Olivia was speaking to him. His nerves were setting in. Brian’s stomach had been in a knot ever since the initial interviews took place. This could very well be one of the most important decisions of his life, he knew, so he needed to be smart with their decisions. "I guess as ready as I'll ever be." He was now eager to see the results, too. There had been a lot of anticipation built up. He no doubt had a favorite of the group, but he didn't want to make that known to his wife just yet, for fear that she wouldn't pass the health screening. He also didn’t want to seem too eager about the whole process. He was still holding out hope that Olivia would change her mind and that his nerves were in knots for nothing. Olivia sat down at the kitchen table and read aloud, "Ingrid Potter...The results conclude that Ingrid is pristine health. Her cholesterol, blood sugar, and blood pressure were all perfect. She didn't appear to be a smoker. She had no diseases or hereditary illnesses, and she scored high on the fertility chart," Olivia finished reading the nurses summary. "That's great news, Babe. we have one good candidate at least thus far!" "Yes, that is good news," he said less enthusiast than his wife seemed to be. Although Ingrid was okay in his eyes, she was definitely not his first choice! “Have a little more enthusiasm, would you?” Brian knew now that his acting wasn’t up to par. He was not fake and his wife could clearly see right through his emotions. Brian nodded and Olivia pressed on. "Bianca Mortimer," Olivia read. "The results conclude that Bianca is in good health. She had no diseases or hereditary illnesses displayed. She scored above average on the fertility charts. She didn't appear to be a smoker. Her blood pressure and sugar levels were normal. The only flaw that they could be noted on the tests was her elevated cholesterol levels." Brian breathed a sigh of relief after hearing Bianca’s scores. This was good. If he were to see himself with anyone, Bianca would have been that woman. "Well, that wasn't so bad," Olivia followed up. “Cholesterol can easily be managed with diet and exercise, and if that doesn't work, medication," she explained. "Although I don't know as if I want to pass that on to our kids, given your history of high cholesterol," she added to Brian! "Let's not rule her out just yet, Babe," he added. "To me, it's not a deal breaker!" “Now there is the enthusiasm that I am looking for,” she joked! Brian gave a half smirk and nudged his wife playfully. "There is one more thing on the screenings for Bianca, Brian.” “s**t. What is it? Is she missing a toe? Does she have an overactive bladder, is she allergic to semen,” a million thoughts ran through his mind!. “It appears that Bianca is also a virgin. " Olivia chuckled! "I think we need to get to the bottom of why she's been saving herself!" Brian found this news quite interesting. He hadn’t expected to hear that so he tried to play it cool. "A virgin," he thought. "Who would have thought that someone like that would come into the short list of ladies." He wasn't turned off by the idea at all. He appreciated that she had morals. He just hoped those morals didn’t interfere with the process either because if he needed to be intimate with someone, he knew right off that he wanted it to be Bianca. She had something that none of the other woman had. She was special. "At least the mother of my children won’t be promiscuous,” Bianca half joked!. Brian smirked. He too realized that that was a small bonus for this whole crazy situation that he had now found himself engulfed in. Brian's thoughts wandered for a brief moment. He had only ever been with one virgin, his first serious girlfriend, Beth Marx. Beth was the nicest, most pure person he had ever met. She and he had a friendship first and foremost. He loved that. He actually missed having a friendship like that one. He did have a great relationship with Olivia, too, but never the friendship that he had with Beth. “Maybe if we chose Bianca. Just maybe she'd be as kind and as pure as Beth, " he thought. “I definitely see a lot of similarities in their character and demeanor.” Olivia continued on and snapped Brian back to reality, "Arial Weston, The results conclude that Arial has no diseases, or hereditary illnesses. She has no issues with cholesterol, blood pressure, or blood sugar. She did not appear to be a smoker. However, Arial scored drastically low on the fertility chart!" "Well, I'm glad we know that ahead of time," Brian added. "I would have hated to begin the process, only to learn that she is unlikely to even be able to conceive." "Yes, Love! See...these tests paid off! And you were skeptical of them," she chuckled! "You were right, Liv," he wasn't above admitting his error! "Last but not least, Sophia Jensen! The results conclude that Sophia has no diseases or hereditary illnesses. Her cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar were all well within the normal ranges. Her fertility results show that she falls within the average range. However, Sophia does appear to be either currently or in the past have been a smoker," Olivia concluded. "A smoker! Absolutely disgusting," she stated shrugged up her nose. "Now Liv, yes, I agree it is a gross habit, but if it was in the past, then she wouldn't be doing it around the house or children. I think we just need to address it. Don't you agree," he stated rationally? Reluctantly, she sighed. "Yes, Babe! I agree.” she went over to him and kissed him passionately! "So what are your thoughts on the Women, Love?" “Will any of them work for you?” “Can I be completely honest," Brian asked? "Of course you can! This process is not going to work if we're not on the same page," she added. "I completely understand that on paper, Ingrid looks like the perfect candidate. However, I just don't see myself being able to ever be physical with her. I hope you understand," he put his hand on her knee. "Well, that is important information, Babe! Getting pregnant can take as easily as one time, or it could take years," she stated. "I definitely want to make sure that whomever we pick is someone that you would be comfortable with romantically! So I guess that leaves just Sophia and Bianca, now that Arial and Ingrid are out. I think we should set up one final interview with both women, where just you would be alone with them. I already had two meetings with them, and you only had one with me involved. Maybe you'll get a better feel for who they really are if you meet them one on one." Brian took a long breath. "Okay, Liv. If that is what you want," he responded uneasily. “It is. Go find us a Baby Mama,” she chuckled! ........... A few days later, Olivia had arranged for Brian to have two one one one meetings with the woman. He was scheduled to meet with them at a local coffee shop, Sophia, at 6:30 pm and then Bianca at 7:30 pm. Brian had arrived early and found a secluded booth in the corner. He was so nervous. He had not been alone with a woman in public since he had gotten together with Olivia. He wasn’t sure that he would be able to cut past the small talk with these woman. It was a very uncomfortable topic for Brian. Brian’s tapped his foot uneasily under the table that he had been sitting at. It helped calm his nerves. Right on the dot, 6:30 rolled around, and Sophia walked in the door, almost as if she had been sitting in her car, just waiting to come in at the right time. "Hello, Mr. Stanton," Sophia shook his hand firmly! "It is nice to see you again," she smiled in a cordial manner as she looked Brian up and down. "Hello to you too, Ms. Jensen," he responded with the same formalities that she had used. "Thank you so much for meeting me today!" "Absolutely. I am excited to get this process going," she said firmly! "You are? Can you tell me what excites you the most about this opportunity," he prodded? "Well, right now, I have been cut off financially, as I stated, so living in a hotel room with limited funds will only get a person so far," she admitted! "Yes, I understand how that could be a challenge," he empathized with her situation. “but this is a big commitment!” “Yes, well, I want to open a bakery in the worst way, so the extra monetary incentives will definitely help with that," Sophia explained. The waitress came over and took their order. Brian ordered a black coffee, and Sophia ordered a tea with lemon. "Tell me what you first thought when my wife mentioned those extra monetary incentives! You must have found it odd," he assumed! "Maybe a little, but not really," she chuckled! "I've been offered some crazy arrangements for money before, if you know what I mean. I did travel around the world, you know," she reached over and touched his arm with a smile as she gave him a small wink. Brian immediately began to feel uncomfortable. This wasn't going as he had hoped. Sophia seemed to him like a robot, one who would do anything for money. Maybe that was the type of woman he should be looking to consider...no strings attached, but honestly, if he had to be intimate with someone, he wanted them to have morals, and be kind hearted, like Beth had been. He knew it wasn't exactly the scenario, though, to be seeking someone with morals... They were asking her to have s*x with a married man. Ugh! Brian's stomach began to sink. He felt completely disheartened at the crazy situation. "Hey, are you okay," she asked, noticing the uncomfortable look on his face. "You don't have to worry about me...I won't steer you wrong. I'm actually quite fertile, you know? I didn't mention it before, but I have had two abortions in the past, so I should get pregnant easily for you! How many children are you and your wife desiring," she took him off guard?" "I ah am not really sure right now. I am the one who really wants children. My wife is doing it to appease me, I'm afraid," he admitted. "Definitely two though, maybe three," he added! "I can make that happen for you, Mr. Stanton! May I also ask if there are any bonus incentives for me servicing any additional desires that you may have," she asked boldly but seductively as she stared him straight into the eyes! "No. I'm afraid not. I have a wife to meet my needs, Ms. Jensen! This is purely business," he made it known. "Okay then. Well, I'm still in...that is, if you'll have me," she winked at him! Brian stood up from the table squeamishly. "We'll get back to you!" Brian dug a $10 bill out of his pocket and placed it on the table for the waitress. He stood up, making Sophia aware that it was time to go. "I look forward to it," she sat up and shook his hand! Then she turned around and left the same as she had come. “Oh my... that just isn't going to work,”Brian thought to himself. He texted Olivia. "Sorry, Babe, Sophia is not the one!" She texted him back immediately, "Let me guess, she's a smoker?" "Maybe...who knows... we didn't get that far! She just isn't the one. She is all about money and what she can do to please me for extra! I just can’t be with her,” he whispered so no one else could overhear his conversation. Olivia’s stomach now turned with disgust for Sophia. She appreciated Brian’s opinion and the fact that he was not in it for the extra marital activities, but she also hoped that he wasn’t just going to sabotage both interviews. "Well, she definitely isn't going near you then! Good call to cut that meeting short," Olivia typed back. She knew that she needed to be supportive of her man and his feelings. "Yes, I couldn't bear it any longer. I'm just going to hang here until Bianca comes. I'll see you when I get home, Love! XOXO" “You will,” she smiled back into the phone. Brian sat back down at the now empty booth. He then opened his phone and looked for any old photos that he still had. Brian landed upon a a photo that he had taken a few months back, just before he was transferred to York. The photo was not your standard photo. It happened to be a photo of a business card. It was a specific business card that he had looked into a little for him and Olivia. It was a marriage counselor to be exact. Brian never mentioned inviting Olivia to go, but he did think about it, even with the current situation. Their marriage was not perfect by any standards. He felt that they would greatly benefit from therapy. However, given that Olivia was herself a Therapist, she felt like she was above any one on one direct therapy. He knew she wouldn’t have agreed to go. So instead, he just saved the card for another day. Tapping the card in the table, Brian thought more about that card and what it symbolized. It meant either working for a better relationship or giving into where they had become. Where had they become? They were happy. At least they were surface happy. No one would know the wiser. But Brian, Brian knew that deep down within their relationship that there were hairline cracks. Cracks so small that to the naked eye were hard to see. But it just took one slip and those hairline cracks would grow. Brian wondered if this Baby Mama situation could be a hello to them. Would this be the one? Would this be the one to put an even bigger crack that was even more relevant than ever? Could this be their ultimate downfall? Or would this be the biggest blessing of their lives? Only time will tell.
